    unit 8 hunting pressure

Creed we never seen people when were hiking around. lots of trucks driving down roads when were at camp. I shouldn't say never, 3 years ago never saw one people for a week in one area off the main road about 1 mile back. last year there I called in 6 hunters 3 of them from out of a truck. 2 guys called in 3 times in the exact same spot. saw 9 vehicles up and down this little 2 tract in 3 days. only one knew there was elk in there the rest drove right by a few decent bulls. so we moved to a different spot rest of the season only saw people when we were at camp or driving. they were going to there own spots. even the popular tanks we have hunted we don't see anyone. had only one person walk up on us at elk tank in fhe 4 days we hunted around there and they were going fishing. That goes for archery deer, turkey and early archery bull so basically a whole freaking month and a half. got drawn again same tag early archery bull so we will be in the same spot till we get pushed out which I doubt cause the place looks stupid and people wont even hunt it.

    Cool find
  3. the key word is you said your a meat hunter. I am betting you dont make it past whitehorse lake and already taken a bull. youll never make it into the canyon if we get snow not even with in 10 miles, and you dont need to.be there are elk everywhere in that unit even in the tall pines when its cold and snow on the ground. good luck. Ive hunted that canyon for the last 2 years for elk and 3 years for deer. its not that great and its a bitch even in sept. dont get me wrong theres some nice bulls in there but its a ton of hiking on some very nasty shoot. unit 8 has a ton of places that carry elk all year from the pines to the sage/junipers and east to west north to south. heck they run across i-40 all the time in dec by garland prairie.

    sad find while shed hunting

Sucks but it happens. never seen anything caught in a fence except a moose. The Warden and I in 93 was driving up to washington state via montana (scenic drive) came across a baby moose tangle up in a fence along the freeway before the pass. Like the dumb butt I am I figured I could untangle it. HA those babies are huge and mama was a little bit pissed.. after 30 mins I had The Warden drive to the closest gas station and get some help, she got back about he same time a state cop drove up. we worked it for 2 hours getting that thing untangled. mostly because Mama moose was chasing us off. we got some vid of it somewhere it was pretty cool. a work out forsure. The baby was pretty cool it didnt mind being petted. mama moose became somewhat pleasant after she realized we werent hurting the baby. she would just grunt instead of charging at the end. Delw

    5 shed walkabout

cool find, were going back up next weekend Kids got the bug now, Even The Warden thinks its pretty cool
  8. Like I said nothing special, had a 13a tag in late 80's and was leaning against a mound under a scrub oak glassing a canyon. couldn't get comfortable and found this thing poking in my back. only thing that was showing was a few points. looked like a lion kill. .
  9. Thats cool. My oldest daughter did that to me, we were yote hunting and she was around 5. I was sitting on a hill bihind the whitetanks she goes daddy theres a deer. I'm looking everywhere nothing. well go show me. she runs a 60-70 yards down hill and picks up a little shed
  10. Shes pretty stoked about it. all the points are sharp, nothing broken or chewed, the bottom left point has some mud on it. All I heard was OMG OMG as she was running, I never saw it thought she was chasing a bear or lion for a pic. I was 100 yards from here she was about 100 yards from it. then when she yelled skull I figured another spike.

    Mulie dead head

yeah I'll get one tomorrow as her deadhead elk and this 3 point are going to the shop so I can make a aluminum mounting plate for them and stick them on the wall. its nothing big or even close to special just a normal buck from the late 80s

    Mulie dead head

cool find. that's a weird one only muley intact skull I found was in 13a, was leaning against a mound under a scrub oak one of the few that was with in 100 yards over looking a canyon. trying to get comfortable and i'll be dang a partial buried skull and horns of a 3x3 in that mound.
  13. haha , that thought crossed my mind. would have been fun forsure, longshooter would have been talking about all the sheep he harnessed down at the local dairy farm.
  14. she was about to give birth. we wondered why she was so spooky, we see this heard all the time for 4 years. they let us walk right up on them well at least my daughter. I didnt notice this when taking the pics until I uploaded them to the pc. we were just parked kid was sneaking up to get her pictures like she always doe's
  15. you think this is bad you should have seen some of the fools back in the 80's when we were using paintballs on elk. its all good, btw she aint a little girl shes 16 has around a 25-30 hour a week job that male teenagers refuse to do, goes to school full time 3rd in her class, volunteers at a community center and shoots competition archery coa, I was being sarcastic to your sarcasm about the lens. the real reason I haven't bought her one yet is cause I am going to surprise her on her birthday with a brand new Vacuum
  16. She was still laughing about that this morning when she went to school and the " My other vehicle is a Vacuum" for her jeep tire cover.
  17. she got drawn for the early bull hunt 2 years ago, I got drawn last year for the early hunt bull hunt and signed my tag over to her. and surprise surprise I got drawn this year again for the early bull hunt and will sign it over to her. I look at it this way I get go go hunting either way, Ive killed enough shoot in my life let the kids have fun. its not about killing its about having a good time with your kids.
  18. TY its cool she likes to hunt. she loves being outdoors and every day I have off and she has off we hunt. she got me back into hunting with a bow about 4-5 years ago. and shes an absolute blast to be around shes pretty hard core and passionate about it. this will be her 3rd unit archery bull elk hunt in unit 8 in 3 years. hopefully this year she will get a shot she is happy with and release an arrow. she's had plenty of chances from 8 yards to 50 target shooters are picky and a tad slow
  19. Cause I dont know what one to get yet. looking at a 300mm we borrowed one of my buddies 200mm and I liked it but thinking of going bigger with a better aperture for more light . his one was just the stock 55
  20. Not even close to harassing animals. we saw these lopes 4-500 yards out off the main road. figured I would drive to the next hill so she could sneak up on them over the ridge. soon as I start driving down the road they bolted so we stopped at the ridge kid got out of truck to sneak up on them, didnt even make it to other side and they ran right to us. we got those pics also. shoot happens kinda sucks. BTW this is the small heard of 4 that hang out by the cement place off the perkins ville road on the south side by the tracks. the north side of the road have a herd of about 30-60 lopes depending on the time of the year.
  21. Yeah the kids pretty resourceful she happened to see that video a while back of those elk with locked horns figure WTF she can do that too... Seriously I took her out turkey hunting for the morning and shed hunting. shes still pretty jazzed about it.

    Early Scouting

I had a simple goal like that too many many years ago in unit 9. after hundreds of trips up there I still find lopes where I never thought they would be. up until about 8-10 years ago I was in unit 9 15-20 times a year if not more in the earlier years. coolest animals in Az are lopes. good luck

Late 7E Bull - Scout Tips

Yup and they look just like this. kid even hiked it with her boots not tied up. I'm not doing getting into this canyon this year 2 years in a row was rough. this year I am on the top in one of the saddles. cool part about canyons like these is you see no one for days and lots of game. not unit 7 pics
  24. Iv'e hunted all my life in tennis shoes mainly cause they are quiet. went through 2 pairs last elk season. this year going to carry tennis shoes and wear boots, then change when we start stalking. my feet just cant take it anymore.
  25. Also practice holding bow back as long as you can, let down slowly and draw again. Yes what B/C said definatly practice holding your bow back as long as you can, then let off do it again then let off do it again but this time shoot just before your too tired. do this a bunch of times through out the year. you will be surprised how your arrows hit and how better you will get over the year. Daughter learned this the hard way last year. decent bull she drew back 3 times. when the bull finally got out of the bushs and a decent shot she was beat. in a way it was a good thing he moved back into the brush before she shot cause it would have been a poor shot forsure. she even commented on she was glad he moved and she didnt take the shot. shes a target shooter so she lets off often, but when your Adrenalin is going and your heart is in your throat its a whole nother ball game.
