That is some beautiful, rough looking country.

Yes it is, Claudias Favorite place in the State of Az. every time she comes back from base we go there even if its for half a day.

That pic was taken from sycamore canyon look out, during hunting season we hunt those canyons on the west side from JD Dam to that point and get a ride back to our truck. Lots of bear and coues in there as well as some big muleys and elk. couple of times we have started just south of elk tank and ended up at that point. long rough hike but quite fun even for an old guy like me.

this is another view of that area west about 10 miles as the crow flies, about 25 miles walking wise.

The 1st pic we actually hike down to the bottom from our camp which was about 5 miles, then came up the other side through the canyon behind her and up just before it got to cliffy. Lots of caves stuff down there as well as a few sheds. just dont be down there when the monsoon is going as its not fun no where to get HIGH fast.

Something tells me you don’t know a single spearfisherman

I dont know any personally  here in AZ, have seen them at lake pleasant and sag when I was fishing back then. mostly they were illegals spearing Bass and anything else that was swimming.

me personally I have nothing against spear fishing even for Bass and trout but thats illegal I guess.

On a side note I was looking at the pics on azfamily this morning they even had the elusive blue cooler in a few of those pics.

  3. Daughter and one of Friends came to AZ from Camp Pendleton for some shed hunting and Easter. They got in 1:30 am sat morning, we left at around 9am looked for sheds tried to call in yotes then ate dinner in Williams and got back to PHX at 1:30 am just beat tired/ We towed her Jeep up north unhooked it and they took off looking for sheds. one guy was coming out of the area we were going. come to find out we both go to the exact same ridge, so we turned around and went elsewhere.

They hiked around the edge of Sycamore canyon both sides about , I went to call yotes, no luck for either of us, She didnt go home empty handed she found another cool skull, we have a huge collection of them that she finds all the time. didnt see one elk deer yote squirrel nothing. then we got into the snow and saw maybe 200-300 elk all laying in the snow drifts.

Lots of people Camping, looked like opening weekend of archery deer, some were shed hunting some were just enjoying a nice easter weekend. J.D Dam Was packed.

Had a good time as usual tiring as crap but well worth it, spending time with Her and she loves unit 8.

  5. That MTW wire is the best, because its flexable as well as multi strands and one fo the best features the insulation they use is actually resistance to almost every type of oil, degreaser etc etc. but the UV sucks so its not good with any sunlight. as its made for machine use plus you can solder it and it holds. Thats what I used because I have a shoot pot of it. wire nuts work well on it too

I have spools of #4 and #6 Thhn for runs in conduit from our main fuse box to the machines we have at the shop. that stuff is great BUT sucks with wire nut connections.

I'm pretty much against wire nuts unless a emergency  I use screw in lugs on almost everything.

That all being said I guy I knew in Canada was building a new manufacturing plant, he has over 200 cnc mills and lathes. it was about 15 years or so ago when copper was real high. the looked into Alum wire and the cost savings was around a 1/4 million dollars just using alum vs copper for his runs. he went with the alum. the 1st year they had to go in and retitghted every lug the wires plugged into. after that he gave an update and hadnt had any issues. He also got the contractor to warranty the alum wire for either 5 or 10 years.

if I remember correctly he used 2 sizes up for alum than for copper.

  6. Just figured I would give you guys a heads up if you have alum wire in your older houses, you might want to look at changing your 220 volt stuff over to Copper. over the years alum deteriorates via the heat and the heat from the amps causing it to get weak, when it gets weak it , and or connections loose up it over AMPS and Poof up in flames. our house we bought in 1982.

2nd time in 2-3 years, Luckly NO damage other than wires burnt to a crisp and some burn marks on drywall and some wood.

Once A year I always made sure of the wires being tight in the Breakers. but never checked any other connections like wire nuts on the water heater connections or other appliances.

Also if you have a alum wire burn at a connection replace the whole wire from where it starts at the BOX  not cut off a foot cause the damage is already done to the wire.

I ended up putting all the Garage 220 stuff on a separate sub panel (in the garage) then conduit to the dryer and Water heater today. Next couple of weeks A/c and Stove but those will be a little more labor intensive.

Going in the 22nd for an ablation. Hope it works. I have no desire to be on heart meds the rest of my life.

Meds aren't that bad. youll probaly get warrfin , digoxin and metropol or however there spelled. Licinapril gave me weird side effects. but thats me.

I learned how to control my Afib, but still need to take the meds. that procedure is interesting I'm going to read up on it. My BIL had his heart stopped like 6 or 7 times and a fib always came back about a month later.

everything except the blood thinner is really not necc, the blood thinners ie waffrin are a must as that keeps you from getting blood clots and having a stroke. I been taking them since I turned 50. Never took meds in my life and over the counter was only if I had too. so it was a shock when I was told I needed to take meds after all these years. it was down right scraey, the other scary part was checking your own blood pressure dont do it it will just worry you. your blood pressure goes up and down and all around. I ended up throwing my BP checker away cause it would freak me out.

you can control your afib by a change in attitude stress really gets afib going big time. to were you will think someones pounding on your chest.

I am suppose to get my blood checked every 4-6 weeks. I get it checked on maybe twice a year. my blood has always stayed at 2.6 from day one (even when it was checked every month for the 1st 5 years. I can pretty much tell when my blood is thick or thin cause I tend to get minor slices in my hands with alum parts I work with.

My Heart doc is cool and a normal person who speaks in normal terms. my 1st heart doc had me going into emergency surgery for an exploratory so to speak. good thing they got rid of him 2 days before my surgery. 1st doc also had me taking 2 asprins a day AND .5ML of Warfrin and he wondered why my Blood pressure was so low (excuess for his saying I needed surgery) once i saw new doc they took.

    And what does that entail?

I had to look it up as I was curious also.

    https://www.heart.org/en/health-topics/arrhythmia/prevention--treatment-of-arrhythmia/ablation-for-arrhythmias

    Quote

Catheter ablation is a procedure that uses radiofrequency energy (similar to microwave heat) to destroy a small area of heart tissue that is causing rapid and irregular heartbeats. Destroying this tissue helps restore your heart’s regular rhythm. The procedure is also called radiofrequency ablation.

  9. really cool,

I found it interesting that the deer looked well groomed one day then roughed up the next.

That spot has alot of game visiting it / especially that bobcat he is pretty much like clock work on the dirrection he comes in and goes out.

it is not newbies, everyone starts out as one. but with contributions on posts, helping out on hunts etc... post build up.  The issue is the scammer/spammers posting a fake sale or wanting to take your money.

I belong to rokslide, ar15 and others and all seem to have some sort of post control for classifieds.  will that weed out all the scammers/spammers, no it wont, will it do a majority, heck yah.  Even the OG fammed AZ Bass Zone had spammers and crap.  I loved the post of someone selling fishing rods leaning up against the table and people would ask how much for the table, what does the couch GPS at, etc...funny sheeets.

CWT is more localized forum and is more open to all, but that invites the riff raff in.

How about the dude selling the crap in his garage and 2 bongs that he called vases  that was a funny thread to. the what does it GPS at was great.

with the way forums are made now that SEO stuff on the URL(thread title in the URL) instead of a post number like back then anyone tying powder for sale will come up in yahoo search. thats what is attracting all the scammers. and people selling stuff. its great for getting your forum known and attracting users but the bad part it Attracts every seller and there brother was well.

I'm sure I'm missing something (esp being a newbie and all)- but wouldn't it be easier to simply ignore new posters vs setting some rules?  Seems like administrative burden to deal with something common sense can solve.

Its no burden on admns, its a simple few clicks of the mouse one time in the admin section of a forum, and they never have to worry about it again.

yes easier for people to ignor pms than to set limits on pms. PMS are the problem. reason being lets say someone had a question in a non forsale section of the forum and a guy with the answer is new and wants to send his phone number to help the guy. he wouldnt be able to do it..

one of the best ways to get this fixed but it sucks for admins and mods is every new member should be held in que until a mod or admin can ok them to join. once the admin or mods ok them there good to go. on AZBZ I did it for a while ( I had no Mods) but it got to be a pain in the butt when I was busy or went out fishing a tourny for 2-3 day, hunting for a week etc etc.

I tried everything I dont like the post limit as I dont like rules on a forum..I tried it in the early years. To me people should have the common decency to post in the regular sections but people selling stuff dont care about what anyone thinks they just wanna make a buck.

the best way I have found to fix the problem was just being a Dick. if I saw someone making nothing but forsale section posts, I would edit there post and say something like. " I am only here to sell stuff, I am a complete scumbag and dont give 2 shits about the people on your website", or I would change there link so it went to a gay porn site. or one of my favoroites was in big bold letters on there posts type in " Its sucks to be me" "I'm Gay, I love men etc etc all kinds of things to do. then when they got pissed and send me an email or pm I would post it on there ad. but like I said I'm a Dick but hey it worked. when it didnt I sent them on a all expense's paid trip to Disney land.

when someones runs a politicaly correct forum those things dont usually fly so, you either add a 50 post limit before the forsale section opens up to them or live with it.

am I missing something here?  Help me understand because I’m pretty sure I’m reading that post correctly.

sorry just got home, Now I see what your saying, yeah thats not the way I meant it.

I’ve read the every post on this thread, including yours.  Some definitely make more logical sense than others that’s for sure.

definitely not taking anything out of context and and MOST DEFINITELY NOT BITCHING about the game and fish DEPT.  Not sure where you’re going with that comment, but not liking some of the generalizations you’re making there bud.

its just the way I was explaining it.

So the alternative is to scrap the current model of using hunter harvest questionnaire and rely strictly on survey data alone?
I’m trying to ask you an honest question.  What’s a logical solution since you’re so adamant the current system is unreliable and inherently broken with people who are lying to only benefit themselves.  How would you go about “fixing” this system is all I’m saying.

Yes I have a degree in Conservation Biology, but that isn’t really very relevant to this discussion.  The point is the azgfd has a mandate to protect and make beneficial decisions for the wildlife resources in this state while taking into account the public’s viewpoints and concerns.

    68olds

I never said the current system is unreliable. I always said the current system is the best system G&F has and it works. I even explained a bit on how it works, and the reasons for it as it was explained to me and a few others.(about 7 pages back)

What I did in fact say is that using the public ( like those who want to require it) will give you false data cause it wont be truthful once hunter figure out how to manipulate there answers to get more tags.

Maybe I didnt explain that well enough or you took it out of context due to others not reading what I wrote and just bitching too bitch like they usually do about G&F.

Unless you subscribe to one member’s outlandish opinion on this thread..that we all need to be biologists/economists otherwise we are totally clueless and our viewpoints are irrelevant!!!

Didnt you say you have a wildlife biology degree in a few posts back?

then you should know all about how standards work and how wildlife biologist use them and there purpose.,

Yes I will say most of the public is clueless again because they only care about getting a tag as long as they get a tag they dont care about anyone else.. you see it on this board and other hunting boards every year... we need to change the draw or change this or that cause I cant get drawn etc etc.

Unreliable? Unit 22 bear shuts down opening week every year.

Who is reporting these sows being killed?

Thats a fair question, heres the deal on bear hunts when thet 1st went to the"shut down after xx days was called in. everyone waited till the last day to report there bear kill. it was widely known for those who shot female bears not to call it in until the last day(I think it was 2 weeks, G&F change the reporting time due to that if I recall about 4 years or so after. that way you got an extra week of hunting. before it was shut down. heck they didnt even have a archery season for bear in the early years.

The problem with data is... Garbage in, garbage out...  Many hunters will provide total crap when asked for info. (I wonder how many elk hunters would say they wounded 5 bulls and tagged none)

Weather, bullets, lions, cars, bears, wolves, disease, starvation, yotes and arrows all kill deer.  G&F can see how many made it through each year, roughly, without any input from anyone. As I see it, their job is to tweak the knobs on the controls that they can to try and maintain the populations they want. All the while, trying to please 15 different groups at the same time.

    Exactly

So who’s fault is it that predators are a problem? Banning trapping, introduced wolves and banning predator contest just to name a few.

As for vehicle collisions with animals, this isn’t a huge issue and won’t go any further with it.

Weather plays a huge roll but I won’t blame this on anyone but the man up stairs.

Harvest data could be very instrumental in determining the over all health of a population if someone would grow the balls to enact meaningful ways of obtaining it. I can only conclude G&F doesn’t care about accurate data because they turn a blind eye to mandatory reporting. Change my mind. And don’t give me the bull crap about turning hunters off by mandating it....

I never said any of theses were anyones fault.

I said they play a parts in animal populations, aka variables when G&F is making there decisions.

Harvest data by hunters is UNRELIABLE if the data is truthful or not. why would you use UNRELIABLE DATA for something.

I never said hunters will be turned off my  mandating that. I personaly dont care if they set up road blocks and checked.

AGAIN I will repeat it Harvest Data by hunters is unreliable because the lie to make numbers look good.

One entity benefits the most from having the max amount of tags sold.

yes and no. should be rephrased to say the most tags sold and still have resources for for years to come.

Remember a few years back everyone was complaining in the deer section about the 7 rifle hunts(including youth hunts) and 3 OTC archery hunts for unit 20C I think there was 1500+ tags along for the permit hunts and lots of people during archery. people were complaining because they couldnt find deer. we never had a day we didnt see a half dozen or so bucks and tons of does. went out last year just yote hunting and found deer and bucks everywhere same numbers didnt seem to really effect them. but thats west of the top of yarnell hill to the freeway 89? (that goes from wickenburg to wikiup). as we never hunted the top or east of yarnell hill most of those deer were seen right off the dirt road in the valley that goes north and south  and some side roads. as well as right off the freeway.

we hunted there for yotes deer and pig for years and years was out there every weekend and some weekdays for years just killin  yotes/and fox's

so yeah I think G&F knows what there doing with there data models

  19. 30 minutes ago, 68OLDS said:

Oh okay was a little confused on what you were getting at there.

So if we can’t go by public surveys, what would be the alternative solution to go about gathering accurate harvest data?

I dont think there is any way for accurate information on harvest data. short of having  road blocks 24/7 in every unit.

now now on top of all that you have other factors that take wildlife through out the year. predators, weather poachers road kills etc etc so you really cant get accurate information of what the animal population is. I believe that G&F is using the best likely Data they get by there own surveys they do has they have years and years of that data to compare it to. also very easy to go back and look at drought years wet years high predator years etc etc. Deer and elk are easy to fix if they over do the tags or under do them. Because there are so many animals.

bighorn, lopes are smaller numbers so just just a small mistake in numbers can effectively wipe out a good population.
