I kind of hate to say this but watch for circling vultures or buzzards. They might show you where it's at.

The police have bait cars. Sounds like it might be time for bait camp trailers.

San Carlos Elk 2017 **edit** Jicarilla High Fence Elk
300RUM replied to Norteno's topic in Elk Hunting
If you want to talk free range San Carlos G & F has a very impressive collection of Elk mounts their building. I was there one day looking and drooling. One of the locals comes in and doing his best impression of an old movie stereotype Indian says "hmppphhh, better get medicine man look like white eyes has bad case elk fever". Took me awhile to stop laughing after that one. -
Saw the weight sorted of claim on the Nosler box and the skeptic in me put all the cases on the scale. The 25 cases were all within 0.9 grains low-to-high. The brass was 300RUM which weighs close to 300 grains. The weight variance for the Box would be down around 0.3%.

The key word is Road. It may be used by anyone using that public land for any reason. The fact that you parked off the side of the road in no way ethically closes that road beyond that point. What puzzles me is why a guide would have you hunting right off a road that vehicles may use. I would expect a guide to pick a more remote location where the Hunt is less likely to be interrupted.

My wife sometimes jokingly calls me Gibbs. I actually take it as a bit of a compliment.

well maybe if you'd have been going faster he would not have made it so far

Is she named after the NCIS character?

I've been up there for spring turkey hunts walking on the snowpack broke through and sunk in up to my armpits. I'm 6'3". We should film this hunt as a reality TV show and make a fortune

Man is he off to a good start as an elk Hunter

For some it's all about their ego. Whether or not they killed it is not relevant. The only thing that matters is that they can get people to believe they did kill it when it's hanging on their wall. They may as well have bought it at Park and swap.

It was a pleasure to come down and help get John's bull out. He really did come across as a great down to earth guy. Taking a round in Mogadishu likely places him in the rangers or even Delta, someone who not only volunteered to serve his country but then volunteered again to be out front leading the charge.

It worked. Someone who knows I am in the area saw it and called me. Now if I can just get back to sleep.

Wonder if the pound of enjoyment would get you in trouble with DEA?

you bring a propane lantern in your pack? My thoughts exactly. I'm rather confused as to how the two of you drew the conclusion the lantern is intended to be carried in a pack. By the time you crammed in all the previously mentioned items, target, multiple sets of boots and sneakers, water proofing spray, gators, a big breakfast, multiple rolls of toilet paper and even a pound of enjoyment in there simply wouldn't be room left for the lantern. It is a handy item to have back at the vehicle if you need to spend hours in the dark boning out an elk. You're gonna chase Elk for miles, kill one, then walk back to your truck for a lantern then back out to the kill? I'll stick with a small flashlight In my experience it is generally easier to move the vehicle to the closest legal point and pack the shortest possible distance. I am also hunting with a partner. The one who shot it starts cutting, the other recovers the vehicle, and brings the lantern, pack frame and anything else needed back to the kill.

I am referring to the firearm chamber. Once I have a round that fits a given chamber I generally do not want another one. As an example I have only one 7mm-08 Rem. I do not collect wildcats. I shoot a 7mm-08 Ackley but there is not one in my collection. The collection is initially split into sub groups like handgun, military rifle, experimental military, American sporting rifle etc. There are some exceptions to the one only rule. I have both a .244 Rem and 6mm Rem headstamp, same chamber. It is just an interesting story behind the two. A few rounds appear in multiple groups. There is a .30-06 in American sporting rifle and a .30-06 in military rifle along with a .30-03. Within each sub group the rounds are organized by numeric then alpha characteristics of their name

I passed this little guy and he was munching on a pile of harvested plants at the entrance of his den. I was surprised he did not react when I passed by. I came back about 45 min later and he was still there but out of food. He started squeaking. It appeared he had a birth defect either not having eyes or not being able to open them. Apparently his buddies do grocery runs for him. As my arrival had scared them away I went grocery shopping for him.

I have seen one used. It is a hollow cutter, that when lowered over the bolt knob, turns it into a 5/16 shaft in one pass. Tools are expensive. Sometimes when you are a shade tree guy you just make do with what you have. Mill the knob down to square. Place the boring bar in the boring head backwards and run the mill in reverse. The boring head can now cut inwards and form a shaft. Thread the shaft & install the bolt knob. Hey, I got there. I just took the scenic route.

This thread had been dead since 2010, long before I joined CWT. I figured I must be the only one strange enough to have a collection of cartridges packed away in a dark corner of the closet. Recently HNDLDR resuscitated the thread. I had been working on an idea of how to put my collection on display in a manner where I did not have a 600 pin bowling alley. I have everything unpacked and pretty close to sorted. It currently looks like this. My style of collecting is based upon the chamber. For the most part these cartridges cannot be fired in the same weapon.

That's funny, now I recognize it. Remove 1 little piece and I get all confused. Not a very good qualification for playing gunsmith is it? -

The one I saw was not brazed carbide. I am just a hobby gunsmith. I have done two of those bolt knobs in 5 years. I think the boring head still has a job. Maybe I will do another one in another 5 years. Thanks for the input though. I'm curious about the mic to the upper left of the cutter in your picture. Does it clamp onto the work to measure hole depth? -

That's kind of the same idea. The one I saw had 3 or 4 prongs and a flared opening to cut away the knob before it cut the 5/16 shaft. It was designed specifically for that job. Hate to think what it cost. -

I have the lathe. Someone does make a fixture that attaches to a face plate and aligns the bolt for turning. Can you imagine trying to get a bolt set up on a face plate without a special fixture to hold it? I believe I would join jeffro with the grinder and file approach first.
