I took a vet out for Tom this spring and it was a great experience for both the veteran and myself. If you decide your son will not be using the tag Please contact Tom. There are veterans who would be thrilled to be given that opportunity.

Cabin rental in Payson, Hunt of a Lifetime recipient
300RUM replied to tanclan4's topic in Elk Hunting
There is a ranch about 2 to 3 miles in on the Colcord Road that hosts disabled and seriously ill children, taking them horseback riding Etc. I'm not sure I remember the name right now, maybe Whispering Hope? Based on your tag holders situation it's possible they may work with you on somewhere to stay. -
I also struggle with diaphragm calls to the point that I have mostly given up on them. I have a couple of reed calls that I like. I also have a Steve Chappell CD titled Extreme Elk Calling. It has around 25 live recorded sequences of him calling in elk using various calls. I play it when I am practicing with a call so I can hear a talented caller and actual elk and learn imitate them the best I can. Can't seem to find that CD right now, I wonder where the wife hid it?

How large is the plate?? If you don't know just measure it with your MOA marks if you have 1FP scope and do the calculation. You can measure with a 2FP also. The catch is the reticle is calibrated to 1 magnification setting, usually the maximum. On my Nightforce 5.5x22 NSX the reticle is calibrated to 22x. If for some reason I want to use a lower magnification I can use 11X then double the measurement. Not as quick and easy as 1FP which is always calibrated to the magnification but there is something about watching a reticle shrink when I turn down the magnification that I just can't stand. All my scopes are 2FP.

Out of the box can be $500 to $ 5000 or more. What price range are you looking at?

6 people with 6 different suggestions? At this point I will be the tie breaker and join Sparky in suggesting OnXmaps.

I saw Flatlander yesterday and just had to ask. "My bull elk tag, antelope tag and bighorn sheep tag have not shown up yet. You going to reach in your pocket and pull them out?" He just laughed. Hey, it was worth a shot.

I have used OnX for about 7 years. It was initially recommended to me by an NMDGF regional supervisor. I drew an antelope tag and the public land ranch I was assigned to had many pieces of private and indian owned land within it's boundaries. He told me there was a trial offer available and if I used it for that hunt I would be so impressed I would purchase the product. He was correct. I am still very happy with the product and have never looked to switch to anything else. I run it on a garmin GPS, not a phone. I have never used any of the other available programs.

It might be worth trying to turn the release upside down and trigger it with your thumb.
-
Ouch. I would try some different releases and see if you could find one that feels good pulling with the next finger. You may need to modify the trigger on a release to make it work well. Do whatever it takes elk tags are important.

I use Applied. Once I selected a bullet from the bullet menu with a G7 curve then when editing to add info to the ammunition screen accidentally bumped the screen and switched from G7 to G1 without realizing it. The program was then calculating a G7 curve as a G1 and it really messed things up.

When you are getting ready for a goat hunt and your bullets are not going where they are supposed to it does constitute a crisis.

Hunting with a 9mm carbine?
300RUM replied to Rock30golf's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/calibers.html The ballistics with the 9 mm in a longer barrel look like this. You will be no where near the performance of a 6" .357 revolver. 9 mm in a 4" barrel 125 Hydra-shock 1061 fps 147 Hydra-shock 951 fps 9 mm in a 17" barrel 125 Hydra-shock 1250 fps 147 Hydra-shock 1069 fps .357 mag. in a 6" barrel 125 Hollow point 1702 fps 158 Hydra-shock 1485 fps Yes, the 9 mm has claimed millions of victims but keep in mind many sustained multiple hits from a burst of submachinegun fire. By using the pistol round you loose the advantage of hydrostatic shock from a large temporary wound channel produced by a high velocity rifle projectile. Energy may be more comparable to an arrow but you lack the large cutting diameter of a broadhead that causes hemmorhaging. A broadside shot and marksmanship that hits the heart and/or penetrates both lungs will be critical. -

Go to the 147 grain bullet, it will provide the most energy and better penetration. -
Hunting with a 9mm carbine?
300RUM replied to Rock30golf's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Interesting article. I noticed it is dated Oct. 2015. I guess I should crawl out from under my rock and read the news more often. With the following expectation "kill a mule deer with no problem under 100 yards" I would still argue against the 9mm. -
Hunting with a 9mm carbine?
300RUM replied to Rock30golf's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Consider that the FBI and numerous other LE agency's have abandoned the 9mm due to poor terminal performance. Yes it could work and the longer barrel will help but I would argue that the changes of a miserable failure are somewhat high. -
Well, whatever it is it is in the United Kingdom.

37b general areas my wife's first hunt
300RUM replied to hempland's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I would suggest going for a drive through the unit. Take the Florence Kelvin Hwy to the Barkerville road. Turn right on the Barkerville road and follow it to Dudleyville. You have to ford the San Pedro to get to Hwy 77 but it is generally not bad, I do it in a semi tractor. Look at a map before you go so you know you can find one of the fords. Take 77 then 177 north about 20 miles, through Kearny, and look for a left turn by a railroad crossing. This is the other end of the Florence kelvin Highway. Take it back to Florence. This loop will give you a good overlook of the unit. The variety of terrain and vegetation. Watch for deer and look for an area that looks interesting to you. Plenty of good spots to choose from. I have seen deer all over the unit. -
Just use some adhesive velcro strips to make a mount for the GPS. Brand new speedometer, quick and easy.

That one MOA change is not a constant, at a higher or lower temperature the change would be smaller or larger. In a ballistics program you assign a base velocity to a load at a given temperature. If you have chronographed the load at high and low temperatures you can calculate the velocity change per degree. If you enter this figure into the powder temperature compensation and turn it on the software can now adjust your trajectory for temperature related velocity changes.

New Bow Setup - Looking for Opinions
300RUM replied to AZDirtyTaco's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I was too busy checking out that buck with a recurve that I just now noticed something....... ONESHOT is true to his name, there is only one arrow in that quiver! You might take another look at the picture Red Sparky, there are 3 arrows in the leaves to the left of the buck. Looks like he was ONESHOTLEFT that day. Nice looking buck ONESHOT. What was the range on your shot? I have never tried traditional archery. Maybe one day I will set down the compound (take off the training wheels) and give it a try. As far as the speed versus weight argument look at it this way. The .357 magnum and .45 ACP are both very lethal. -
How do you feel about an 8x minimum magnification for hunting purposes? I do use an 8x32 and it is a compromise I feel eliminates the ability to make a quick close shot. With that rifle I usually go to advantage point that I spend the day at, moving in and out in the dark. I glass with binoculars and use a spotting scope to get a closer look at animals I find. Ounces= pounds= pain, with the injured ankle I leave the tripod and spotting scope behind and the powerful rifle scope lets me take a good look at the animal I found. It's a compromise that keeps my ankle happy. If I were to hunt more on the move with that rifle I would swap on a 5.5x22. If I plan on moving a lot I carry a light rifle with a 3.5x12. I would not recommend an 8 x minimum if you move a lot with the rifle during hunting hours.

Reloading Bench Advice and pics
300RUM replied to Hoss50's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I built myself an 8 ft by 5 1/2 ft enclosure in the garage that is air conditioned. The bench in the photos is 5 ft long. I can keep all my reloading equipment, cleaning gear and gun smithing tools in it.
