Meet Shelby Akin, The Future Hunter Extraordinaire In My Family!!!
300RUM replied to lancetkenyon's topic in The Campfire
I believe I hear Mr. Foxworthy "If your granddaughter was just born and you are already planning to build her a rifle......you might be a redneck" It is a truly great project to be planning. Are you aware of the reduced power youth loads that can be created with H4895? I loaded them for my hunting partners kids when they first started shooting. They both said it really helped out. -
Let's narrow this 6.5 chamber down (help)

I was loading h4831 last weekend in a 7mm-08AI. It was a series of increasing charges to establish maximum velocity. It was amazing how full the cases were, way up into the neck. I expect it is possible some cartridges could not hold a maximum charge of h4831 but with the SC being more compact a maximum charge could fit. I have not fired those rounds yet and expect h4831 is a little slow for that application. However I have learned you do not know till you try. -
Two New Rifle Upgrades Coming Soon To An Addict Near You...
300RUM replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
in round numbers I was looking at $500 for fluted stainles or $800 for a proof blank. Part of my argument for buying the proof was that I was chambering a caliber I already used and did not to need to buy dies and a reamer so I was saving money. That is what you call Creative Accounting. I also have a badly injured ankle that screwed and plated together. I find Lance's equation that turns ounces into pain to be very true. -

Back to shipping gun parts? It doesn't sound like there was any drama this time. I have a very similar barrel blank sitting on my workbench. I decided to give Proof a try rather than go with spiral fluted steel. My parents just moved so my father and I had to load up and move our shop machinery. Having that blank in my hands and the lathe currently out of operation is the definition of stress. -
Another thing to pay attention to on gun broker is whether the seller is a licensed dealer or just some guy without a FFL who is selling his own gun. I always bought from sellers with a FFL and had them ship to a gun shop by me. It always went smooth.

Congratulations. Can you get her a licence and start putting her in for bonus points? -

Given those choices and how you want to use the rifle I would probably calculate the cost to get chambered and set up to reaload and fire each round. I would just take what literally gave me the most bang for my buck. How common is 6.5 x 55 brass here and what does it cost? The 6.5 x 47 brass will be more expensive but the reduced powder consumption will add up as savings. You probably already have Creedmore dies. Cost analysis with the appeal of any specific cartridge as a tie breaker would be my approach. -
I'm coming up on 50 and finally got around to doing it earlier this year. Yea, I know, slacker. Surprisingly, I was not the oldest person there, does that make a little of the pain go away? I live in Chandler and ended up driving to the range in Catalina for a class. Make sure the online test is completed and take the certificate of completion along to the field day. I believe the certificate expires 3 months from the time it is issued. If you do not complete the field day before it expires you have to re-take the online portion and obtain a new certificate.

I took my wife along quail hunting once when we first met because she wanted to watch and see what it was like. Not always the most graceful thing, she tripped over a rock and began to fall forward. Her solution to the impending impact with the ground? Tackle the guy in front of you who is carrying a loaded 12 gauge and use him as padding. I leave her at home now for my own safety.

Sorry for your loss. It has to be hard to build a casket for someone close to you who is still alive.

My parents have a cabin in Forest Lakes. I have been hunting up there during archery deer season for the last few years and found a few spots I like out by slim jim Ridge. I just hope it's not a crowning fire.

Always One To Tinker... .300RUM w. 230 Hybrids?

2:00 AM target practice with the illuminated reticle? I always wanted to see how it would work. I just loaded the last 90 .308 bullets I have and need to fire them before I re-barrel to 7mm. Might be time to satisfy my curiosity. -
When I built the model 7 the selection of picatinny rails for it sucked. If you ever decide you want a rail and the model 7 rail selection still sucks a SA 700 rail can be adapted. 3 of the 4 holes will match the 7 action. The rear hole that does not match up needs to be drilled and counterbored in the rail and the rear of the rail needs to be shortened to the length of the 7 action. As I said, it was educational.

Nice looking rifle. When I built my lightweight 7mm-08AI I used a 700. At the same time I built a lightweight 7m-08 on a Model 7 for my hunting partner. It was an educational experience working with both actions at the same time. To make it even more complicated mine was left hand and his right hand.

Yes, 50 yard parallax is common in scopes intended for rimfire and also shotgun scopes for slug guns.

The leveling kits are generally spacer blocks that go between the top of the strut and the mount. Usually secured by 3 bolts. If you can turn a ratchet and operate a jack they are usually fairly easy to install. You might want to look into installing it yourself and saving the shop bill. My guess is the installation would cost more than the parts, unless you are looking at the real fancy kits with entirely new struts.

Sent you a PM with the code for an Optics Planet coupon I got in the mail but won't be using. My guess is the code will work for you if you enter it. Either save a few bucks or get the kids something a little nicer.

Always One To Tinker... .300RUM w. 230 Hybrids?
300RUM replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
No, I was not trying to make a case for short barreled .300 RUM rifles. I would never go under 26" on that round. I just thought the data was interesting. He did the same test with a variety of cartridges. I collected data like that when I was considering a 20" barrel on a 7mm-08AI. It could be projected the other direction for an idea of what a longer barrel may achieve. I have seen a few .300 Rum rifles with 30" plus barrels. I have a 27.5" barrel on my .300. That may sound like an odd dimension but with a lengthened stock and the brake it was the longest barrel I could fit in my pelican 1750. I am so glad I measured and figured that out before I installed the barrel at 28". That would have been a bad day. Did you catch he noted R-P brass with loose primers after 3 loads? Someone else said they had that problem a while back. -
The AR-550 stamp indicates the type of steel used to build the target.

I have not seen one of those since I was shooting 3 gun. Looks like you are going to have some fun.

I tend to copy / paste interesting information I find on line and hide it all over my computer like a squirrel hiding nuts. During a "clean up" session I just found the following. The test uses a heavy bullet load so this seemed a reasonable place to post it. I thought others may find the results interesting. Testing the 300 Ultra Mag by Charlie Sisk A few weeks ago I done some testing with shortening barrels with various calibers. I just finished this test with a 300 Ultra. These loads were EXTREMELY HOT !!!!!!!!! I will not post the grains here because on the third loading the primer would fall out of the case . I never load this hot , only this time for the test. I used Remington brass, Federal GM215M primers, 220 grain round nose bullets. I used the same procedures as the last test. length H-4895 H-870 .....27 2740 3107 .....26 2709 3088 .....25 2685 3062 .....24 2663 3046 .....23 2636 3018 .....22 2612 2997 H-4895 lost 128 fps H-870 lost 110 fps No, I do not want a 22" barreled 300 RUM but it is interesting to see what actually happens as the barrel is shortened rather than guess. -
I have a Weaver 40/44 3-9x40 on my 10-22. It has a multi dot BDC reticle. I am happy with it. Should be about a $150 scope. Might be another option for you to look at

That makes me think of an album. Maybe a distant relative?
