  1. A couple of suggestions. If the rifle is set up for you the scope may need to be re-positioned for your son to have proper eye relief. If your son has not fired the rifle before and recoil seems to be an issue reduced power loads can be loaded with H4895. You can keep increasing the charge, as the shooter gets used to the recoil, untill you get to the maximum load. HODGDON® H4895® REDUCED RIFLE LOADS For Youth Hunting, Informal Target, and Plinking __________________________________________________________________________ Hodgdon Powder Company has found that H4895 can be loaded to reduced levels. H4895 was chosen because it is the slowest burning propellant that ignites uniformly in reduced charges. To create reduced loads, the 60% formula is recommended. Find the H4895 load in the Reloading Data Center for your caliber and bullet. Take the maximum H4895 charge listed and multiply by 60% (.6). The load may be adjusted up from there to achieve the desired velocity and accuracy. This works only where H4895 is listed. DO NOT use in a cartridge where H4895 is not shown. Example: 30-06 cartridge with 125 gr. Sierra SP bullet. Max load shown in the Reloading Data Center with H4895 is 53.7 grains. 53.7 X .6 = 32.2 grains. The shooter begins with this load, and may work up from there to obtain the desired velocity and accuracy for his reduced load. Call Hodgdon Powder Company if additional information is needed, 913-362-9455.

  4. I spent a little time trying to learn a little more about Hybrid 100V. From the Hodgdon site... Hodgdon Powder offers the largest selection of quality smokeless propellants for any reloading application. Hodgdon HYBRID 100V is the result of combining the technologies of spherical powders and extruded propellants. The chemistry of a spherical powder is combined with the geometry of an extruded propellant, creating a smooth-metering, super short granule extruded shaped propellant with high energy. HYBRID 100V has a burn speed between H4350 and H4831, yeilding superb performance in such popular calibers as 270 Winchester, 243 Winchester Super Short Magnum, 7mm Remington Magnum, 300 Winchester Magnum and dozens more. On shooting and reloading sites opinions on the powder vary. Quite a few claims of increased velocity over other powders the shooter had used. A number of users do feel it may be a bit temperature sensitive while others don't. Opinions on accuracy are divided. Then, what powder does everyone agree on? Sounds like one of those "you just have to try it for yourself" deals. I'm trying to pick out 3 to 5 powders to try for 168 gr loads for the 7mm-08 AI and will probably include it. One of these years NM will not send me my money back and I will need a elk load for the rifle.
  5. Don't feel you need to limit the 7mm-08 to 100 yards. 300 yard shots should not be a problem if your son can place the round in the vitals. Look at heavier bullets in the 168 gr range for better penetration.
  6. No, the point of impact will shift between having the brake on and off. The 7mm-08 should have plenty of power to get the job done at shorter ranges.
  7. Funny!!! The exact opposite for me I tried many powders when I developed the 140 gr load for my lightweight 7mm-08 AI. There were some real surprises during the testing. I'm sure the 20 inch barrel was responsible for some of them. I am getting ready to start powder testing with 168 gr bullets for an elk load. The bullets have been on the shelf for over 4 years. I normally hunt elk archery so it hasn't been a high priority. I checked the Hodgdon site for 7mm-08 data and Hybrid 100V showed the highest velocity. Interestingly, it also shows the highest velocity for 140 gr bullets in a 6.5-06. Have you tried it yet?

    CNN Interview

A reporter would take personal risk to be at the actual site. A commentator sits in it comfortable office talking about something they know nothing about in person. She is no reporter.
  9. It is a carbine I built off a bushmaster lower when the 6.8 first came out. I wanted a quality stainless barrel, something not readily available at the time, so I bought a 1" Douglas blank and turned my own barrel. Unfortunately mid- length gas systems were not real common and I used the carbine length. At first I had a short extractor life span with hotter loads but switching to an H3 buffer and building a restrictor for the gas system solved the problem. The next barrel will be mid-length. I use the rifle to hunt so additional energy is desirable. I felt the cartridge was capable of more than the loads in the manual were producing. The 130 gr load I worked up produces 15% more energy at 200 yards than the 110 gr load from the book. That is a healthy increase. It will be interesting to see if a 140 gr load can top that.
  10. Last year I started working with magazine length heavy bullet loads in a 6.8 SPC AR carbine with the goal of obtaining more energy. There is generally no load data for bullets over 115 gr. A 110 gr bullet at 2525 fps with 1034 ft/lbs at 200 yd was my best by the book load. I have been able to load a 130 gr bullet to 2400 fps for 1189 ft/lbs at 200 yd. a nice improvement in energy. Today I made my first attempt with 140 gr bullets and got 2360 fps for 1133 ft/lbs at 200 yd. I still have a few more powders to try with the 140 gr. It would not take much more velocity for the 140 gr to exceed the 130 gr load in energy. Has anybody else experimented with heavy bullets in this round?

At times you can ask yourself if it is the job of America to police the world. In situations like this you should consider the following quote from Edmond Burke, "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing".
  12. Have you tried H1000 yet? I worked up the load for my friends .270 for his sheep hunt. With a 140 grain bullet H1000 beat H4831 by over 100 fps. I would think it should perform very well in your 6.5.

  14. I run Garmin gps 20's with OnXmaps software on them. The OnXmaps, formerly Hunting GPSmaps, was recommended to me years ago by an NMDGF regional supervisor for an antelope hunt that had many blocks of private and Indian owned land I would not be allowed on. I ran a trial version on the hunt and have used their software for AZ and NM since then. Having your first archery bull tag is awesome. Your mind is going 100 MPH thinking of all the details of the hunt. Don't get to wrapped up in all the other details to overlook the most important one. Make sure you get out there and have a good time. The hunt should not become a chore.
  15. My partner and I used to always hunt 1 & 27 for archery deer. He likes to wear running shoes. The grass up there is deep and can be very wet in the morning. He often had to switch out for waterproof boots. I always take some scent free soap, a bucket and clothes line and wash clothes in camp if needed.

The reason I do not like side by sides

Don't blame the vehicle, it could just as easily have been a jeep, dirt bike or ATV. The problem is the driver. If you have to shoot pictures of it again try to get a recognizable landmark in the background or something very unique in the forground. If the photos are ever used to back up a citation it will help make it stick.

    Buck Officially Scored 200 0/8" gross 197 4/8" net

I have received about 10 messages from guys claiming they were chasing it. Problem was only two people were within the right area for it to be this buck. I had stories spread from over by Clints well, all across the rim, all the way to showlow. So apparently theres 8 other 200 inch typicals out there somewhere That is beautiful deer! So, did you interrogate the other 8 guys carefully enough to be able go get yourself another one?

    A coues whitetail

There is an up side to their small size. They tend to inhabit some foul terrain and it makes packing them out easier. Evolution at it's finest.
  19. When I used to do multi day wilderness pack hunts I used an Outdoor Research Bug Bivy. Basically it is a zippered enclosure just big enough to put your sleeping bag in and keep small visitors out. The top is mesh netting so it wont help if it rains. As I recall they are under 1 pound and probably in the $50 range. Got it at REI.
  20. And then there's grandkids.......gotta love it if you are listening to Frozen with grandkids singing in the back!!! For both of you I am thinking of a parody of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Whiskey Rock-A-Roller. The chorus could go like this. Well, I'm a Disney rock-a-roller That's what I am Children, Disney and miles of travellin' Is all I understand.

    6.5 prc. ????

Wasn't the 6mm originally released with an inch designation of .244 and renamed to 6mm when the rifle was re-released with the faster twist barrel?

    6.5 prc. ????

Agreed!!! I think it's great though. More choices, more rifles, more shooting, more fun. I remember when the creedmoor came out. For the first 3 years I wanted one bad. Everyone on shooting forums was saying it will disappear it's only a fab. Hornady did a great job in promoting it. I think they are in the belief it can happen again. It's funny the 6 mm Remington and Win 243 came out he same time or close to it. The Remington will beat it with velocity by 150-200 fps. But Winchester did a better job promoting it and Remington stop making it because of lack of sales. This will be fun to see happen if someone can get their hands on it Remington used a twist rate for 6mm rifles that was only suited for lighter varmint bullets. They did not envision it being used with heavier bullets as a deer & antelope rifle. That led to a lack of sales. The .243 rifles were released with a twist rate that made it a good dual purpose varmint & large game rifle. That is why they substantially outsold the more powerful 6mm.
  24. I drive for a living and spend time in areas where XM does not work well. I have over 500 CD's scanned into my computer so I just hook up my phone and load music to it then plug it into the stereo in the tractor. Some of what is currently on my phone includes... Fleetwood Mac, old Peter Green era stuff like Green Manalishi and Black Magic Woman Priest and Santana made them popular but Mac is the original Stevie Ray Vaughan A favorite of mine for many years Michael Schenker Love his acoustic guitar work. Dire Straits Can't stand many of their popular songs but alot of the ones that were not very popular have a interesting blues influence to them Johnny Lang Dio Clint Black Molly hatchet
