I think you nailed it! They were Desert Hackberries From the size of the piles it must have been something larger, coyote, pig, bear even. Still not sure why they "expel" them so quickly. Thanks for the help on this one! Jay

While out pig hunting in unit 44 yesterday I kept finding piles of scat/vomit like this in the thick washes (piles are 4-5 inches across). The seeds/berries come from a larger tree that only grows in the big washes (which in hindsight I should have gotten a picture of). Does anyone know what these seeds/berries are and what animal is eating them? I ask because it seemed like whatever was eating them seemed to get the trots or throw them up within 100 yards of the trees they come from. They also have a very hard seed inside and seem to be of very limited nutritional value.

The tree is too large to be a juniper (was 15+ feet tall) and was in low desert. Definitely not manzanita. What really confuses me is why they eat them only to pewk them up or get the trots within a few hundred yards.

Be careful of the drop aways if you have a short brace height bow. I learned the hard way. I have a trophy taker that I am happy with functionally but it just doesn't get out of the way of the arrow fast enough on my new bow and the tail end of the fletchings hit. Ended up switching to a Whisker Biscuit. If you are interested in the trophy taker I will make you a deal on it, just send me a PM.

I have the X1A1 and have had good luck with it. The bow scabbard doesn't work as well as advertised in my opinion, but I am usually carrying my bow while out so that hasn't been a problem. Jay

Vizsla's seem to have a knack for finding bones. Every time I take mine out into the woods he seems to find elk femurs, antlers, etc. and as a pup he liked to go raid camps nearby and bring back the discarded legs. I am convinced you could train one to hunt sheds just like quail. Just haven't put the time into trying yet.

Got these pictures third-hand in my email and thought I would share them with everyone. These two bulls are reported to have removed 100 yards of fence while fighting near Dixon Montana.

Well, I assume it was a family group. Barn owls can have up to about 12 young, although 4-7 is more common. Or possibly two family groups haning around together. Neat sighting.....I haven't ever seen anything like that.....don't suppose you had a camera with you? The other question would be if you are sure they were barn owls and not burrowing owls? Since you said there were trees around, I assume you were in a drainage going through a forest rather than the more open habitat that burrowing owls use. But burrowing owls have large broods and can be particularly abundant in one spot like that. Amanda These owls were too large to have been burrowing owls and their faces were all white. I am certain they were burn owls. I was out by Rio Verde, low dessert with a lot of deep thick washes. Unfortunately I did not have a camera with me to capture the moment. It would have been a cool picture.

Nothing can top Tyson's very disturbing story but here is my contribution.... 2-3 years ago I was out quail hunting east of Rio Verde. On the way back to the truck I spooked a barn owl as I was heading up a small ravine. I stopped to watch him fly away and noticed that he did not go more than 10 yards before landing in a nearby tree which seemed strange. I then noticed that there were 15-20 owls all around me hanging out in that small ravine. Some were on the ground, some were in trees and they were not bothered at all by my presence. It didn't take long for my Vizsla to notice them and he went in for the owl-retrieve and they didn't spook. They just flew up into the nearest tree to get out of his reach. It almost seemed like they were having a meeting and were waiting for me to leave so that they could continue. I looked around an did not find anything abnormal such as a critter that they would have been scavenging on. It was very strange/spooky behavior and something I don't think I will ever forget. Jay

While we all have the ability to voice our opinions at commission meetings the schedule makes it very difficult. Commission meetings are typically held M-F during the day and are hosted all over the state. We have families, regular M-F jobs, and cannot take time off from work/family to drive all over the state and make our voices heard. G+F expecting people to miss work to attend is unacceptable. The meeting schedule needs to be revised to include weekends but it is probably unreasonable to expect the commissioners to give up their weekends to serve the public. There is a commission meeting today in Pinetop at 8am. I am guessing attendance will be very low... Hmmm, wonder why? <End Rant>

Definitely avoid the weekends if you can and get as far away as possible from existing roads. I see more roadhunters in Kaibab than anywhere else in the state and have had several shots ruined up there by jacka$$e$ that think they can jump off of their quad and manage to hit a deer with their bow from 100+ yards.

I have spent several seasons in 20C chasing muleys. Never saw any Coues but Matt Pierce who is/was the unit manager mentioned on several occasions that there were some that hung out in the higher terrain East of Antelope Peak (Just down the hill from Yarnell) Jay

I agree! In the past they have only been an annoyance and a disgrace to me but this year a group of them ruined my best opportunity of filling my tag while hunting in North Kaibab. The forth day of my hunt we spotted 4 bucks feeding on the edge of a canyon. Conditions were perfect and I was able to get within 40 yards of the group and they were feeding my direction. I sat and waited for the closest buck to step out from a fallen tree for a broadside shot when a polaris ranger came down a nearby road with 3 people in it. They spotted the deer jumped out of their vehicle and began launching arrows from 90+ yards. The deer quickly took off and I came out to confront them, quite pissed off. What idiots! I kept my cool but they knew I was not happy. Their comment "If we had seen you we would not have shot".... Oh really? If you had seen me so would the deer! We continued to see these guys driving in a big loop with one person standing up in the back with binoculars and the other two ready to jump out with their bows. Idiots! Unfortunately there were no G+F officers around to give them a talk on the legality and ethics of road hunting. The saddest part is that one of them was a young kid who is going to grow up thinking that they were "hunting"
