Wow! Sure does look dry in those pictures but they must be getting some good feed somewhere. Will be interesting to see how much more they grow

Very nice photos. Thanks for sharing!

Fantastic photos! Thanks for posting them. It's fun to watch them grow. It will be interesting to see if the "crooked horn" looks any bigger this year than at the same time last year given he's a year older and the better moisture

Congrats on the tag. I have the archery tag this year up there as well. Hopefully there is one less elk for your hunt Heres hoping we get some rain soon; it's already looking pretty darn dry up there.

+ card hit for me. I'm excited as I know it's either 23N early rifle bull or 23N early archery bull for me (most likely archery). I had 17 BP this year and had considered holding out for early rifle but I think I was still ~5 years from a tag and I couldn't stand to keep waiting. I decided instead to change mentality and put archery as second choice and I have no regrets, it's going to be fun to chase them again. Now I have a few months to Scout and learn the unit - should be fun. Congrats to all that drew and better luck in the next draw to those that didn't!

Yotebuster I think you nailed it right on. I have 17 BP this year and when you look at the points carefully and try to account for point creep I think I was still 3-6 years from a guaranteed tag for an early rifle unit that I would want. I decided to go for archery and go have a fun hunt- big bull or not - and get more chances to hunt. Hopefully not too any people were thinking like me or I'll be out of the bonus pass with only 15 tags.

Sorry for the question but I have read the AZGFD website and still am confused. I plan on putting in for an early rifle bull tag that I do not have enough bonus points for draw in the "first pass or 20% bonus Pass round" with my first choice. For my second choice, I plan to put in for an archery bull tag that I do have enough points to draw in the "first pass or 20% bonus pass round". My question is do I even have a shot at drawing my first choice or am I allocated a tag in the "first pass 20% bonus pass round" before I have a chance to draw my first choice in the "second pass - first and second hint choices round"? Thanks for any insight that you all may have on this.

Interesting that it's set up that way. Thank you all for your input

Looks like a great hunt for you guys. Congratulations!! I was up there with my dad who had a tag. We didn't hear any shooting. I thought the fog and rain made it a bit tougher. We couldn't hunt some areas we wanted because the roads were too bad in the rain. We did see one real nice bull but couldn't get it done. Always fun to get up there and try, though. Again, congrats to you guys.

Gorgeous bull, congrats. I enjoyed watching your videos of the "the rookie". Any plans to download some videos of this hunt? Again, big congrats.

Never owned a trail cam and sure haven't ever touched one but I could understand being concerned that a flash going off while an elk is watering could frighten it and change it's behavior. I don't know enough about these. Are they supposed to be infrared flashes that the animals don't see or are they white light flashes? I agree your equipment shouldn't have been tampered with but I sure wouldn't want to have a bright light flashing at all the animals that come into a water hole that I'm hunting. I'm still not convinced these cameras are as innocuous as many of you think. I don't think he was entirely unreasonable by simply disabling it and leaving a note explaining why. I would have thought much more of your response if you had done it with class and asked for a number to speak with the other hunter or left your own explanation as to why you had placed the camera.

I know there seem to be 1000 of these a year, but I've got another one to add. I know how to look up the latest BP breakdown as far as the number of applicants with a certain number of bonus points. My question is this, is there a way to determine how many applicants in a BP pool are residents vs non-residents. For example, I have 13 BP for elk currently, G&F website says there are 286 applicants with that many BP. Is there any way to know how many are in state vs out of state. Thanks for any info any of you might have on this.
-
Thanks Tony! I hadn't seen that breakdown before. Very good to know. Also a little disheartening to see that there are a lot of people out there with a lot of bonus points. Some year these should pay off. Thanks again.

Congrats on a nice bull. That sure looks like rocky country. Was he hard to get out?

Absolutely beautiful deer and to pull it off with a stick and string is absolutely amazing. Congratulations on a well earned trophy and even better memories of getting to enjoy it with your close hunting partners.

Absolutely beautiful deer. I love that set-up he is shooting. Big congratulations! -
sorry, I gotta ask. What is the deal with removing the esophagus? I've skinned a lot of game animals over the years and left them hanging but I have never removed the esophagus. I don't remember ever noting that the neck meat spoiled. Do you all do this?

WOW! Awesome looking buck in beautiful country and with a crowd to share it with. Congratulations! Now lets hear the story.

My nephew has a Junior's tag for a raghorn (4pt or less) Bull elk hunt on any White Mountain Apache tribal unit between November 6-12. We have never hunted any tribal units before and apparently are unable to scout prior to the hunt since other it is tribal land. I wanted to see if anyone on here is familiar with any of the units and could give us some pointers as to general places to start so that we don't waste too much of what should be our hunting time scouting and trying to find a spot with elk. I'm hoping we can get the kid a chance for his first elk. Thanks in advance for any recommendations you may have.

White Mountain Apache Tribe Elk Hunt
Coueser replied to Coueser's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Thanks for the information everybody. I appreciate the idea for a nice "fishing trip" up there a week or two before the hunt so we can see where the elk are at while we fish. I was wrong originally, the tag is not any unit. It is units 1-5. Hopefully, we find some and it's an exciting time. Thanks again. -
Great pictures. Congratulations!! Now lets hear the story.

BEAUTIFUL BUCK! Those trail cam pictures are unreal. It's a little easier to see how you passed on a 100 incher when he knew what else was in the area. Big congratulations!! -
I'm always impressed with an antelope with a bow. Big congratulations!

It's a bad idea that sets a bad precedent. It's a form of segregation bsed on how long someone has lived in a state. We are all U.S. citizens and our state of residency is already taken into account when applying. People move around frequently enough in an effort to gain meaningful employment and support their families and defend our country. Giving one preference just because they have lived in a state for a long time and supported that state's G&F department is ludicrous. If we were going to do that than we ought to just start selling bonus points to the highest bidder since his money would go to "supporting wildlife in the state". Anyway, like I said before, BAD IDEA.
