You should be able to kill a pig on foot by hunting off the Highway that goes from Globe to Winkelman. In general hogs like creeks and rivers. You won't have to deal with any quad guys down there either. Bret M.

Neat finds while roaming the hills
bullwidgeon replied to GRONG's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I am lucky to find my way back to the truck most times. That being said I have found 75-90% full pots, an axe head lots of petroglyph rocks and other assorted indian stuff and a killer Buck knife from the spot where I glassed up a bear that I eventually killed. I used the rusty knife to skin it after my other 3 blades were rendered useless by bear grease. Other than that I haven't really found anything too cool. That spanish armor find would be AWESOME! Weatherby Mark V action shooting a .300 Weatherby. You can kill everything from Hualapai pigmy rock voles to giant bull Pachyderms with one shot out to 1000 yards every time. Bret M.

Looking for a needle in a haystack
bullwidgeon posted a topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I went go help my uncle and his buddy who drew a sheep tag for 31/32 the last 3 days. It was pretty neat, and I am always amazed by Aravaipa and the vastness of that place and amount of neat little animal concealing cracks in the Earth there. Anyways, we were unable to locate the "plan A ram" we were looking for on this expedition but they are relocating to another spot in that big place and will go after "plan B" or "plan C" ram, if that doesnt work out maybe we will go back and look for "plan A" again a little later. Sheep move alot, more than deer anyways and that place is too big to consider an animal completley gone. Only in Aravaipa (and maybe 22 or 24B) can you pass up Booner sheep every day holding out for a real Toad until after Christmas . Here are some pics, no sheep pictures for me, I was mostly just glassing up deer and enjoying the scenery . At one point in time "Plan A" was on living just around here some place. As you can see that's quite a big chunk of country to find a goofy traveling old ram. Here is a buck that was all by himself feeding in the middle of the day. Just a 2 pointer, but a nice 2 pointer. Not the biggest we saw but this one was posing for the camera. He also was living in canyon that I usually would have considered "too steep" for a coues buck to live in. The cliffs above and below this guy must not have fazed him at all, he seemed right at home it stuff I thought only a sheep would like. The coues are starting to rut, some had swollen necks, a few of them were cruising around with noses to the ground like dogs on a hot scent and some were sparring a little and chasing does already. Good luck to everyone with December tags, it should shape up to be a good one. Bret M. -
You guys should go meet Mr. Quimby if you make it up there. He is cool and has some good stories, especially about Africa. I went to the SCI show a few years back, it was mind boggling all the neat stuff they had there. Bret M.

Looking for a needle in a haystack

Yes, but not in all areas. I am pretty sure there are rules prohibiting it in places like the Kofas and Cabeza Prieta. I am not sure about BLM wilderness areas though and alot of the best sheep areas are there, especially in alot of the SW units. Bret M. -

Aravaipa has desert sheep only. The last aerial survey of Aravaipa turned up 50 something head I think, but there are more than that floating around throughout both units 31 and 32. Shoot, our little group saw 30 or so the last few days and we only looked at one little section of the place. It was just nice to get back up in the hills and check out a part of that canyon I had never been to before, enjoy a campfire and some cool weather and hang out with some of the guys who taught me how to hunt. 27 is loaded with sheep, they stand in the road, if you ain't careful you might bumper check one . Hog tags during November rifle hunts is NOT COOL !!! There is enough folks in the field already between the carp chasers and regular deer hunters. I need to go explain the hardship this may cause me and my brethren to the Fish Cops. Bret M.

That eyegaurd rules! Nice one. Bret M.

From the field photos it looks to score 176 and 5/8 ths. That is a bad picture to be guessing anything about anything. Bret M.

I have seen field photos, it is a good one, looks even bigger in the field. I heard it was taken a few weeks ago in that unit with the cactus next to the rock below the big juniper tree . Supposedly 136 and 5/8th gross green . According to the word on the street anyways . Bret M.

There ain't alot of HUGE bucks anywhere. That being said two of the biggest deer my family ever killed were whacked by pushing Manzanita thickets in the old days before binos or tripods. Who's to say if it was because there are more bucks in that stuff or because there were more deer overall back then (both were killed in the 2 tag days). I spent alot of time glassing incredibly thick junipers last year in December and came up with a few sub 80 inchers and not a whole lotta does either. It wasn't very cool as far as seeing deer and hindsight being 20/20 I should have been down in the cactus and mesquites where they stick out better.... Bret M.

Were you goofballs roadhunting, I guess them tamies up there probably come charging big red trucks figuring you'd toss them some hay or something? And how about leaving some for seed. Late bull hunts are to thin out the raghorns and spikaroonies not great big 6x6's . All joking aside, good job !!! Bret M.

Ernesto, The bucks are ALWAYS in the flats! I bet the view was nice way in the heck up there though! Good story and congrats to you guys. Bret M.

Coues Hunt SW New Mexico
bullwidgeon replied to coueselk's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
You shot over him, and that canyon was so small he topped out before you could rezero and flop him? Come on, we don't want suspense. Awesome pictures by the way. Bret M. -
Chingered up 2 point NM gene! Nice buck anyways, congrats it gets tough when the wind howls over there. Bret M.

What a whopper! That thing is awesome! That deer is probably OLD! Bret M.

HAM hogs in 33. Turkey in 27 on the later hunt, they probably won't be calling too much then but I know where a few come to drink at . Bret M.

Nice deer. Does he have a broke arm too? Shooting a nice buck like that with a broke arm, now there is an accomplishment!! I know full grown guys who throw in the towel after little things like falling in cactus patches or almost steping on rattlesnakes. They would never leave the house with a busted arm to go deer hunting. Anyway about it congrats to you guys! Bret M.

Awesome deer! Bret M.

Seen the fee proposals for 2006?
bullwidgeon replied to DesertBull's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
There are solid oppertunities for children in this state. Granted they may not be Kaibab rut tags or Late coues hunts and they could be better. But come on guys if you just want to take your children out deer hunting then put 5 early and november whitetail hunts on one application and I assure you, the kid (and you) will be hunting yearly. Same goes with elk, there are leftover L.O. cow tags every year and most rifle cow tags go out at 50-80% draw odds if you put them in first or second choice. I am not sure about the entire class A class B tag idea. I don't see why they just didn't raise the fees across the board all the same, they shouldn't have 5% of the tags in the state more expensive than the rest. As far as Non Residents go, until I can draw a tule elk or antelope tag in California or hunt without a guide in Alaska and Wyoming for everything as a NR then we shouldnt let any NR's hunt here at all (except for maybe a few cool New Mexicans). Obviously if it is OK for Cal and these other states to keep us out of some of their hunts all together than we should ban all NR's from everything except leftover hog tags and sandhill crane hunts and small game... Secret to painless skull boiling?
bullwidgeon replied to Redbeard's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Clothes hanger, wire brush, 12 pack of Budweiser Heavy and about 5 hours in the afternoon with nothing else to do. The only good news about deer is that elk are about 100 times more trouble. I did two deer this weekend with my buddy and it was about a jillion times easier than the bull I still haven't all the way finished from Sept... Bret M.
