What is your Coues deer set up?

Weatherby Mark V Synthetic in .300 Weatherby. 4-14 Burris II with Ballistic Plex. A heavy Bogen tripod. 10x42 Leica BN's for around he neck and 15x56 Swaros in my pack. No spotting scope. If I can't see 'em and tell what they are with my current glass, then they aren't big enough. Bret M.

    G & F article on reg changes

The fact that any of us think we can do anything other than wait for new commisioners appointed by a governor who sees things our way is HILARIOUSLY SCARY! They will do what they want when they want how they want, they pretty much proved that this weekend. It didn't used to be that way but apparently it is now. Get used to it. Start looking for houses and jobs in New Mexico, or just hunt when you want. That later program seems to work real well for alot of the Apache and Greenlee county boys . Bret M.

    The AZ One Shot Challenge

ANP, You are totally right, any shot past 400 is not doable. They should never even be attempted by any but the most uneithical, irresponsible, lamest goons on Earth. You shouldn't hunt around them, so if you see my truck please turn around and leave as you will be disapointed with what you are fixing to see. My truck is gold Tacoma 4x4 regular cab . 2006 Dec. coues hunts

They have a new way of thinking at the G&F, all these extra tags and jacked up extra hunts in units with noticiably smaller herds than down South on top of the dryest winter ever. The deer herd should be looking real good in '07..................NOT ! Bret M.

    2006 Fall bear hunts

It really is lame. They are closing down some of the best bear in the pear hunts in the state. I really wish they wold just stop jacking with things and leave them the same. I also want to know who the bad@ss cowboy is that is going to find a freaking bear in the Superstitions and kill him on August 11th. It will be like a bajillion degrees then, good luck getting even the hide out on that one. I have lost all faith in Game and Fish and their decision making for the states sportsmen and women, this really is going to ruin one of my favorite fall/late summer activities. Bret M.

    What did you apply for?

Both coues hunts in 23 and rifle antelopes wherever my buddies put us in for. I think the SW zone, but I am not sure. Bret M.

    Arizona's 10% cap

I am pretty sure that New Mexico stopped managing wildlife for the general public years ago. They pretty much do what the outfitters and Ranchers/Landowners want. Hence landowner tags for everything and yearly elk slaughters in some units with alot of graze lease. Good luck fighting those guys, they are well funded. They are always going to get their NR Guide tags and Landowner tags and coerce your game department into burying their heads in the sand. I am sure it will be like that here someday too, or worse we will elect an ultra liberal Cali to office and they will try to ban the hunting of everything but birds and squirrels all together. I am sure glad I like killing birds . Bret M.

    Desert Mule Deer Range

I once followed, found sheds, hunted and tryed to keep an eye on a ginormous desert carp a few years ago. Over 3 years he moved around quite a bit, over 6 miles from North to South and about 3 and half miles East to West. The ground is all completley flat and unglassable where he lived unless you had an elevated tower in the back of your truck or climbed a powerline pole. There were also long periods of times where I couldn't find so much as a fresh turd or track in the greenbelts he called home but the next month or sometimes week they would be covered with sign, so I am sure he moved around to more than just the places I saw him. I havent seen him in 2 years but I also kinda stopped looking. Bret M.

    Baiting

Having killed my first 5 or so deer directly over bait in Texas and Louisiana, I am here to say it sucks and doesn't compare to spot and stalk or stand hunting anything. The deer alot of times look up at you and then continue eating especially if there is no mast crop that year or time of year and they have been relying on corn for most of their diet. Also, bears over bait looks pretty weak on T.V. and from what I have heard from buddies who have killed bears over bait. Almost always the bear looks directly up at the stand right before he puts his head in the barrel trying to get to the last donut at the bottom. I have been told by guys who run bear baiting operations back East that sweets are like drugs to bears and alot of them especially younger ones will do anything to get them especially if they are used to getting the same thing at the same time every day in the same place, regardless if a marching band is playing or not in the nearby woods. Accordingly, 80% percent of the bears killed in most of those operations are less than 5 year old weeners. Bears are like a cash crop to them to be raised on bait and shot by someone willing to pay for it. I have never been on a spot and stalk or stand hunt where the animal let me walk right up to him or let me shoot at him after they were aware of my presence and knew what I was. I mean even collared peccaries beat a track out of the country when they figure out exactly where and what you are. I am not sure about Ethics but I do know that baiting is Legal and I guess that's really all that matters because as long as something is legal and makes it easier, then some people are going to do it. I just don't want to hear that hunting with bait is just like chasing something around on foot or scouting out a well used trail or scrape and stand hunting it. Lots of people down South and back East don't bait, they stand hunt in areas and over trails that they scouted out and figure will give them the best opportunity to kill a deer, apparently some of these people have thoughts about Ethics and alot of them, amazingly, kill deer without bait. Big Coues Mount.....

That's nice! I don't remember ever seeing a coues mount with the tongue out like that, cool. Bret M.
  21. While deer hunting over the years over in NM I have seen a bunch of antelope on BLM and Forest service land. From reading the regs it looks like you are assigned a ranch if you draw a general rifle tag over there and have to hunt there and don't really get to hunt any public land. Do these ranches allow you to hunt without a fee or is there guide/outfitter/landowner access fees? Also, the hunt unit/units I would put in for goes from like the Arizona border all the way over to North of Hatch it looks like. What if they send me to a ranch over by Hatch 472,000 miles from my house? Do you get any say as to what ranch they stick you on? Compared to the deer and regular elk hunts over there it all seems very confusing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Bret M.

    my 2006 Lion

I am with Ernesto, it's a Liger. You can shoot Ligers with or without spots, says so on page 423 of the regs, right under the section about unicorn tags. Nice Liger, congrats! Bret M.

    Antelope questions

Thanks guys, I talked to the guys I am putting in with and apparently one of them is friends with a game warden out of the Lordsburg area. I think we will assign him to keep track of the game warden while we hunt if we are lucky enough to draw and do not like what we see on the initial ranch . I never have procured a goat yet so I imagine I won't be too picky either way. And Crazy, I would love to be the "public hunting goon" on one of your ranches . Bret M.

    Off season hobbys???

I catch 3 pound trout, 5 pound smallmouths, 10 pound largemouths and 40 pound flatheads all summer long. I shoot every coyote I call in(usually around a bajillion or so a year, this year I am only around a half bajillion so far though), find truckloads of antlers, and generally act a fool all summer long. All this in between fending off hordes of adoring young women, feeding the hungry, curing the ill and saving the rainforest in my free time. Once in a while I hit Mr. Quimby up for lunch at the Chinese food place in Eagar. I am here to tell you that Mr. Quimby's place in Greer far from a "shack". I know "shacks", my grandparents have 2 in Eagar ... Bret M.
