Shorter, within reason is fine. Longer is when you will get the main issues. I typically will trim a tad shorter than what the book recommends.

How well will that hold a heavy spotting scope? Like I have the Leica Televid 77 APO... Its a big, honkin heavy scope will it hold it just fine? How much 'sighting in' is needed to get them to see the same place?

One thing about drawing out one handed quickly if you use turrets, they tend to get turned, and a pretty fair amount.
