I was sitting and glassing in November on the Elk horn, kinda south west of the ranch house when 15 illegales walked right infront of me, and 5 behind me. I called BP and within 5 minutes the blackhawk was there and out came a BORSTAR agent... got him on the trail and off he went. he got the ones that went infront of me. Later in the day, a woman agent had the other 5 picked up right near camp.

I have had my best weekend of crappie fsihing ever at SC. It was about 12 years ago, but it was all I could do to keep a minnow on my hook! Ive never had fishing like that! I have came close with nice 18-20" rainbow trout on every cast, but nothing like that crappie fishing I had that day!

Long range rifles?
firstcoueswas80 replied to mattobertin's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Tim, thats not the only group like that that the rifle has produced! Your right on many other types of hunters not gettin flamed. This past year in October AzpackNhorns and I were at camp finishing our cleaniing chores after his buck was killed when we saw some deer run across the hill 1,000 yards behind camp. I grabbed my binos and put them on my tripod, got on the deer. 3 does. BANG! some one shoots right near camp! It ends up being this old man with a cane that is about 400 -500 yards from our camp... Do the math! thats a 500-600 yard shot OFF HAND at RUNNING DOES!!! He of course missed by a mile, but didnt even bother to go check. He later walked right through camp and asked us if we heard him shoot. we said of course, you were in our back yard! He then asked if we saw the size of the buck... We all said, partner, you just shot at does..... I believe that guy to be the kind of guy that shots his beer can ( which he had just consumed, and was making more targets, just in case he hit one!) at 67 yards! -
Long range rifles?
firstcoueswas80 replied to mattobertin's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Tim, this is the best group I have shot from my Bettin Custom. Redrabbit was there to witness it!( He got mad at me as he shot his personal best 5 minutes before I shot this group, and I beat him ) -

Long range rifles?

Todd is a good guy! He is the man that built my 270 wsm. the gun is a little rough around the edges, but it was a budget it gun ( richards microfit wood stock instead of a mcmillan, mauser action instead of a remington, set poundage bold instead of adjustable) and you know what that thing can do! You will be pleased with it! -

Long range rifles?
firstcoueswas80 replied to mattobertin's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
As far as turrets, you can calculate so that you know where to clicke it, instead of counting clicks. Jim, the only Jewell triggers I have shot have the safety at the bottom, which I dont like. The Timney triggers are great! I have my Bold trigger and I like it. It had some creep in it, and when I adjusted it, it was gone and is nice and tight at 2.5 lbs. -
Long range rifles?
firstcoueswas80 replied to mattobertin's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I agree with you 100% This is something that I will try to get good at and only then would I try to make a long shot. I have been shooting for a long time and am a respectable shot but I consider 500 yards a far shot on an animal, but hey what the heck I figure if I get a better rifle than I have now and learn to shoot it at 1000 yards what harm is that gona do? It will only make me a better shot and hunter. I am a bow hunter mainly so I have been sneaking up on animals for a long time now and am pretty confident that I will be able to get closer than 1000 yards for a shot. Another reason I am going to buy this rifle was last year I made a shot on the last day of the hunt at about 400 yards with my 30-06 shooting 180 grains. (I know not the perfect load) Needless to say the first shot I missed but adjusted for the second shot accordingly (aimed 2' over the back!) and dropped my first coues buck where he stood. So now that I am a coues NUT I figure I will spend the money on a nice set-up that takes more of the guess work out because I DO NOT want to wound a deer and am willing to do anything possible (including spending a buttload of $$$) to make a one shot kill. Also I do plan on getting a rangefinder and have been looking into this quite a bit and am set on the Swaro's or the Leica CRF 1200's. Someone had also mentioned that you are only as good as the scope you have and I am fully aware of that and agree 200%. That is why I am trying to get as much info as possible so I know what to plan on spending and more importantly so I am able to get something and have enough time to set-up and learn to shoot it before next year. THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP GUYS KEEP EM COMING! IMO, the best rang time you can do is go to the range and get your ballistics doped, (wind, and drop at what ranges) and then go out in the field and start practicing! My favorite way to practice is either on jack rabbits or rocks. Sit up on a high spot with your spotter and pick out rocks. range em and bust them! Its fun and you get a lot of good practice out there! By the way, you are breaking a unspoken law and not posting a picture of your deer! -

That 7 RUM is one bad butt round! I push my dads to 3600 FPS with a 140 accubond... With the boone and crockett reticle, he dumped his buck at 531 yards one shot! -
Long range rifles?
firstcoueswas80 replied to mattobertin's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
A kimber montana is a good rifle, but i dont think it would be a good rifle for long range, super light, pencil thin barrel ( by the way for the people who tell me to bring factual evidence, I have a super light, pencil barrel gun, so im speaking from experience). it wont take up any of the "shake" of the gun, because it is so light and they are usually short barreled so you loose some velocity. -
Bryan, thought you were going back to the tent and open sighted 30-30?

Long range rifles?
firstcoueswas80 replied to mattobertin's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I shoot a 270 wsm built on a mauser 98 action, put together by Bettin Custom Guns. It has a 23" Shilen barrel, bold trigger and is topped with a Zeiss 4.5-14x50 with turrets. I dont have any pictures right now of the rig, but it sure can shoot... as long as it is on paper! usually when anything with horns steps infront of the conducter, he blows it! -
Thats awesome! I did some calin in flag this weekend and didnt call a single dog!
