    hunting shows

Lark, for onc, your old crusty redneck but made a good point!(besides .270 being one of the top 2 calibers of all time, right next to the 270wsm) "lets back out and come back for him in the morning" at 3 in the afternoon and then they talk about how he only went 100 yards" I HATE THIS!!!! it seemes every shot on TV that the animal doesnt drop on spot they do this! and they always say "it was a perfect shot, he only went 30 yards" when you can tell it was a less than perfect shot! this bugs the crap outa me! only seen a hand full of Tred Bartas shows... he is talented, but one of them put a bitter taste in my mouth.. he was spot and stalking muley does, he took some looong shots (50+) and wounded and did not recover a doe or two before he killed one. but, hes also not perfect, just like any other archer! and Brian you are correct, i think Eastmans is one of the best!

    1st pig hunt, 1st am

you might be surprised at how long it takes to get profecient with a bow. especially out to 40,50,60 yards!
  7. went out yesterday and monday coyote callin with a buddy. these were my first two days ever as being the caller... usually go with a buddy who uses a electronic call. Monday: set up is on the side of a hill over looking a saddle pretty decently covered in cedar. after my second set of calling, i saw two paws walk up under a cedar. pulled up my Kimber 22-250 and clicked off the safety. i lip squeeked and he didnt move. blew on my call lightly and he moved to a "opening". the "opening" was right through a dead cedar tree. i put it on the best looking whole and squeezed... he ran off! dang! hit a branch! Yesterday:truck hidden, sun at back wind in face.. perfect! we walk into the opening we wanted to call to find a bunch of elk. we mes with them for a while making cow calls and what not. when they leave, we decide to call there anyways. after my lest sequence, waited about 6-7 minutes then i let out a long howl. waited for 5 minutes. look at my buddy and i say " its gonna be funny when one of these days we call in a dog and dont see it and stand up to leave and it hauls butt" 5 seconds later, he stands up. when he stands up i say "dont move, theres a coyote" he basically thinks im full of it and he turns around and sees the dog. i guessed him at 400 and put my Varmint reticle scope on him like he is 400 yards out there.... well i shot right over his back... looking back i think he was 310-330. if we had our range finder i would smoked him!!! not bad, my first two days callin and two dogs called in.. to bad i cant shoot!

    What was Jim Zumbo thinking???

Actually, for once Lark had a valid legit point... not bad for an ole; Geezer Jumbo has been around the hunting world for 30 years and he didnt know people hunted with "black guns" AR-15's AR-10's Mini 14;s SKS'... come on.. thats a crock of BS and we ALL KNOW IT!! some people are ignorant and some people are blind but nobody is that blind... i have read alot of stories from him about coyote hunting... on all those trips nobody carried one of the above guns? come on Jim, were alot smarter than you think. ya gotta come up with something better than that to trick us!

    Spotting Scope ?'s

i got a chance this past october to check out the new Nikon spotting scope... ya know.. the tiny one that weighs like 6 ounces and only costs like $650... AMAZING!!!! the thing is tiny and super light but the optical quality of the scope is amazing!!! Younghunter's dad didnt believe me, but i said it was very very comparable to a Swaro spotter and still do. optically, the swaro is better, but not at what 3 or 4 times the price? the size, weigth and quality of the scope is amazing, it is honestly bright and clear, nearly as good as the swaro. for my money, i would choose the nikon over the swaro just cause when i say my money... theres not much there to speak of!

    Jim Zumbo

I do think that Mr. Zumbo said some stuff wrong, used some wrong words and all together made a statement that went against hunting and gun owner rights. however, for Outdoor Life to fire him after 30 years is not right, his show to be cancelled is not right, and for the sudden outbreak of hate for him is not right. he was punished a little too much in my mind. i am sorry to hear all that happened to him, but then again, it was his words and he should have known what would happen.

I know exactly what you mean when ya say bring a back up rifle.... ya mean bring a rifle incase your first goes sour... got that... and thats why my 270 goes on every hunt. i used the lion and pig example cause my 270 goes as back up on every hunt and i used it... but not as a back up.

Once again, Jim has some good things to say. especially down talking the trophy. i hate when some one calls a buck a "dink" shows disrespect to the animal. im happy with all the small bucks i have taken.

Rich, your last statement is one i dont think many hunters go by. I, personally spend quite a few days shooting and testing and retesting hand loads for my rifles. RedRabbit and i spend aot of time during the summer testing different loads for our rifles finding out which ones shoot the best. this is turn provides a high level of confidence in your rifle that i think is extremly important. Carry a back up rifle: this past december, while guiding for the well known and absolutely amazing Mullins Outfitters, i had my 270wsm in camp just in case it needed to be used. well, wouldnt ya know it, one of our clients had a glitch with his rifle and had to carry my gun. he actually had a 385 yard shot at a nice buck with it but missed. on the next hunt i guided on with them, i actually didnt bring a back up rifle and this client also needed to use a back up rifle. but, we were able to travel to my house and pick up a back up rifle and actually fix his rifle. i always carry a back up rifle and having an extra rifle is actually what let me harvest my mountain lion last year. i was on a pig hunt and had my 270 as well as my 223. took my pig with the 223 and the lion with the 270.

    Last Day Peccary

Bret, you may be a superior hunter, for that i aplaud (sp) you. but not all of us can spend 60 hours a week looking for deer, or our cousin pigs in the wild. some of us have schooling to get a college degree, you do know what that is correct? its one of those things you pay for to go to school and then when you graduate ( yes graduate, like what you, well what I did from highschool. with honors i might add, dont know about you) you get out and make lots of money. anyways, im sorry if my room mate hurt your feelings. but i can see why your mad, that javelina is about as ugly AND as tall as you. i under stand your hate for me, as i am over 5'9 in fact, i am 6'3. i can not help that i got tall jeans and you well... did not. but you keep killin monster bucks and monster javelina you stud. i, personally did not know we were in competition.

    40% less elk/antelope applicants!

When they moved up the dates, the department probably figured that they would have a substantial loss of apps anyway come on you should know better than that!!! that means AZGFD would have used their brains! we all know better than that!

opening day i passed on a buck that i should have shot. he was just a big fork, but i ended up passing on him and shooting a smaller fork on the last day. he was with two other nice bucks and i stalked wo 308 of them. never saw the 2 bigger bucks leave, but once i got set up found the big fork at 308 right away. i regret passing on the big fork, but i guess hind sight is 20/20. Also, dad and i used the quads a little too much. dad wasnt up for much hiking, and me not wanting to get too far from him i hunted "lazily" didnt do much hiking but a lot of quad riding. i wont be doing that any more, i will use my quad to get me where i want to get, then hunt and hike from there.
