    Utah Gun Exchange

Utah Gun Exchange is a good place to list guns FS. It gets views from neighboring states. Utah used to have a nice online classified adds on another site but they went all PC and stopped it. Some enterprising folks started up UGA.

    Which directions do you glass?

I try to glass in the direction of the deer. In the early AM glass where you figure they will be feeding. Mid AM early afternoon glass where you think they are bedded or moving to-from bed/H2O. late evening where they will pop out of bed to feed some more. Just have to get out learn your country make plans and readjust plan as you learn more.

Not claiming Moral Ground here, not making judgments on whats "good' or "bad". I am just not sure specifically setting up and setting out to hunt 500/600 or beyond is fair chase. This is the second post that goes on about how the deer has about zero chance of detecting danger, that indicates the lack of fair chase. Now if you see it different then lets have an open honest discussion on this.

    Lightweight Riflescope

If you can get the Leupold you described then that would be a very nice set up for your rifle. I have a very light 270 WIN with the small Swarovski 3-9 Z3 and out to 300/350 its been enough. Going out to 500 I rather have what you are looking at in the Leupold. Good luck, good hunting.

    Lightweight Riflescope

Well do you want light weight? Then Swarovski Z3 3-9X36 is the way to go, 12OZ's. To shoot past 300/350 I have come to believe you need a bit more. Now this is my experience and I invite others who have done this to chime in. To get out to 400/500 yards with a light rifle I would like something like the Vortex Viper HST 4-16X44 its $570 at optics planet and 21 ozs. For ranges past 350/400 dial up turrets would serve you well. Leupold VX3i 30mm 4.5-14X40 Boone and Crockett reticle at 15ozs gets close to your price range. Shooting past 350/400 with a light rifle becomes a challenge. Thats just my experience, and what that experience leads me to recommend.

Ohhhhh do you think. That would be awesome !!!! Lets see, only single shot rifles and lets say max 4X maybe 6X fixed power scopes sans turrets and duplex reticules at the most. Also only cartridges that were around before 1930.

I'm sorry but it IS feeding the anti's. We should support ALL legal methods of hunting. You don't have to like it, or even agree with it, but you should support it, and allow it. Some guys don't like hunting with dogs, some don't like long shots, some don't like archery, some people don't want to hunt bears, some don't want to hunt African Game, and on and on and on. Where do you draw the line on that!? Support all legal hunting, or go nit me a f#cking sweater. The problem is, that people are f#cking selfish now of days. I want it my way. Your way is wrong. Only my way is right. Grow a sack people. Nothing is perfect, get over it. Ok Six0 I simply posed a question about fair chase. I would rather you not get up in my grill because you don't like the question. BTW if you don't want to feed the antis then quit bragging about that 1000 yard assassination and don't post video of it (not you in particular because I have no idea how you hunt or go about your business). When you get your deer inside of 300/400 yards not much time to set up a camera. In some ways killing at very long range is like sleeping with your wife's sister better to not say anything about it or post video. I mean, you know if you don't want to feed the antis so to speak.

Always a fun discussion. One question that comes to my mind is at what distance is it no longer fair chase? You know, does the deer or elk have a fair chance of detecting danger when its a guy and his spotter 1000 yards away laser ranging them then loading their weather station data into the ballistic app etc? So when we depart the zone of fair chase now its not hunting its just killing. Oh and don't give me this "your just feeding ANTI's ideas". heck antis don't like hunting PERIOD and they are clever enough to figure out on their own what might not fly as fair chase. ,

Shooting/hunting beyond 500/600 yards is i whole different game. When I do the FRI AM 500yrd practice, accuracy with my Seekins Havak 6.5C PRS rifle with muzzle brake and big glass is dead on cinch. When I get behind the gun using a 270WIN normal weight MOD 70 Winchester hitting inside of 6 inch group becomes more challenging. I just enjoy hunting with the 270 MOD 70 and enjoy lighter and less gear. It feels like hunting and its enjoyable. If I wanted to be a sniper I would have skipped the U and joined the Marines at age 18. I hear they they a great Scout/Sniper program if you are good enough to get selected for it.

The law AZ SHOULD HAVE PASSED!!!!

Commercializing the hunt to the point it becomes technology, big $ and big egos paying someone else to do all the work so they can get their big kill. heck lets just cut out a steel silhouette of a monster buck or bull set it up at 600 yards and put Mr Big Buck Master Blaster in position to knock it down then give them their Euro mount of some plastic cast mongo rack and send them on their way.

    Synthetics vs wool

I made the switch to synthetic years ago. My brother is an avid climber mountaineer and he showed me the way. I have been wearing fleece coats for years and wether its at 7000 feet in a all day snow or a Southern AZ fall drizzle I keep dry and warm. Fleece sheds water better than wool and dries faster also lighter. One downside is you need a wind barrier either built in or in some kind of wind breaking shell. Never wear or think about wool for 30 plus years.
  15. Does the MOD 53 have the distinctive MOD 70 3 position safety? I agree if their is family memory value a REM 700 or push feed MOD could be bought reasonably for a diner action.

    Backpacking on a budget

Hmmm I used to backpack hunt and went very light. Where I hunted had limited H2O so I would pack water in months or weeks ahead as time allowed. When I hunted it was blow up pad like thermarest, quart pot, metal cup, butane stove, light/dry food, freeze dried coffee, sleeping bag and decent thickness clear plastic for rain shelter. Pack was a bare frame and gear went in small duffels. Got very adept at cutting up mule deer and lashing to frame, hams, shoulders and backstop made one load out and camp would take second trip.

Does everyone have their popcorn ready??

Your dads a poacher and a liar, your brother is a poacher, liar and thief . . . How far from the tree did you fall? Hopefully that sheep is cleaner than that poached muley. My dad is a poacher ? You have no idea who my father is . Let me tell you a few things about my dad ! My parents have been married for 42 years . My father is one of the most amazing men on this planet ! They broke the mold with him . I have heard my dad cuss one time in his life and he said dang (is that even a cuss word ) ? My father is very active in his church and has has some of the highest calling there are . He is a school board member , fire board member and a well respected member of the community. So to say he is a poacher and a lair couldn’t be farther from the truth ! O yeah another thing my father taught me was not to shoot a 300 bull on a 3c hunt . Its a shame that the religious community that has "Higher CALLINGS" tends to as a group not see the dark side of some of their members because said member do and say all the right things. If you look good, say the right things and glad hand everyone then there can be no wrong there right? NOT SAYING that this is the case here, just saying appearing as a "good sort" within your church means very little.

Does everyone have their popcorn ready??

Hunting is not a sport, for me it is a living ritual "The Fall Ritual Hunt" celebrating where we came from. Its a blessing we live in the land of the free with enough wild open country to pursue our passion for the "Hunt". Over focusing on your Trophy Kills leads to a missing the whole point. The wild lands and the wildlife we pursue deserve some respect, this means don't cut corners or focus on killing just so you can brag. Evidently we are discussing the downside to this blind drive to show off.

Anyone here go to the AZ Long Range PRS Matches?

The reason I chose the 7 SAUM, is because it's my least recoiling rifle that shoots .5 moa, has a decent tactical scope on it, and wouldn't be a chore to carry around. I do have a Howa 1500 Hogue 243 Winchester that would be a LOT cheaper to reload for, that I could use in the Production Division. It doesn't have a great scope on it though. I did change the bottom metal on the rifle too, so it would accept ATI magazines. Would this prevent me from competing in the Production Division? Thanks for the tips and pointers too by the way. Edited: ATI Bottom Metal and Mags, not AICS. I get that and the scope with tactical turrets is pretty much a must. A 243 would be nice with right weight rifle and appropriate scope. You will have fun and get to workout your 7mm at some yardage. If you want PM me if any more questions. Yep caliber MV limits are to save wear and tear on the steels. I would have to look at rules again but production does no allow much modification, meant for off the shelf precision rifles like Ruger Precision Rifle or Howas offering that have MSRP less than 2K.

Anyone here go to the AZ Long Range PRS Matches?

Way more gun than needed, but it will work. I shot my first match with my 270 Sendero, What I learned was more gun than needed, lots 6.5C or 6mmC thereabouts, even 223. Muzzle break helps to stay on longer targets so follow up shots don't waste time reacquiring. Also shot strings can be up to ten rounds and timed so DBM is a very nice to have. Stages vary from shooting at 150 yds positional, to stage with 1000/800/600/400 yard shots. You could bring rear bag rest/squeeze sock, ballistic calculator/APP, a way to get wind, temp, pressure or density altitude for your ballistic APP. Or just make a drop card out to 1400 yards. So far longest shot has been 1400 yards. Its a good group of shooters and happy to help out, so show up have fun. 1 Ballistic drop table or ballistic calculator out to 1400 yards 2 Rear bag and front support bags, other shooters share if you need anything like this 3 Plan to shoot prone, offhand, sitting, kneeling and over or through other barriers/obstacles 4 For multirange long range stage a way to read or present your dope for different yardages so you can dial your scope hold The groupe is good with welcoming new shooters.
