Capturing Great Mountain Lion Photos with Trail Cameras
TREESTANDMAN replied to Healy Arms's topic in Mountain Lion
I've always wanted to put my trail cam on video mode and put some catnip down to see how they react. One of these days I'm going to try this. Mike -
It all depends on your determination and goals. On my first hunt, that would probably be my lower range to shoot at. If it is one of the 5 units, then I'd try to hold out depending on how long you can hunt. Mike

Hunting Water after a big rain
TREESTANDMAN replied to double lunger14's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I agree that it's a waste of time for deer. They are very cautious when coming into water because most of them have had arrows flung or been attacked by lions or coyotes at water. If they don't have to, they wont. Mike -
Good info Lark. I would also recommend to process the coues deer yourself. I put a tarp on my backyard table, buy some "freezer paper" from walmart for a couple of bucks and cut steaks, roasts, jerky strips, and stew pieces. It is very easy, free, and I think the meat tastes less gamey. Mike

Good luck!!

I've had 2 instances when I've pee'd off my treestand and had deer come in undisturbed. Once a large buck even sniffed it and went right to the scrape. Until I'm proven otherwise I will continue to pee from my stands when the need arises.

I might be interested if you lowered the price a little. I've used Danners for years and need some at this point. Those are my syle right there as well. Mike

He is a decent buck! Maybe high 80's in my opinion.

Wow! The most popular bino of coueswhitetail.com!! Nice!!

Catclaw, Have you ever owned a .270 wsm? Thanks for the info man! Very straight forward! I considered a .300 wsm and even a .300 RUM however I didn't want to need a muzzle break. I almost wish I would have gone with a .308 because I've heard they are good for reloading and you can shoot the heck out of the barrels without burning them up? I didn't get a .270 wsm to win any competitions so if they are not pinpoint accurate at 800 yds it won't hurt my feelings. The chop saw idea is a good one and actually one I will probably end up doing after I see how bad the recoil is. I didn't know they had 7mm WSM? Mike

I guess Remington has such a good reputation that it doesn't need to advertise a guaranteed 5 shot MOA under 1".
-
WOW! I just got a nasty pm and a text from two members that were a little offended at my "down-talking" Remington. Just to clarify, I never said Remington sucks.... I just think if you are getting a factory rifle with no intention of changing out the barrel, your chances of getting a "shooter" are higher with a company that guarantees a group of 5 shots under an inch than a company that does not. I'm a little ignorant when it comes to rifles so I'm just going based on what I've heard and read. Mike

Here is a picture of the rifle so you guys know what I mean:

Thanks Casey, I'll try that one out for sure. One thing I just realized that I DON'T like about my new SAKO model 85 is that Simms nor anyone else does not make a recoil pad to fit the but end of the rifle!! Sako/Tikka's factory recoil pads are as hard as a rock. The butt end of the model 85 in the synthetic has a weird curve to it which will not allow any screw on recoil pad to fit. Bummer! Mike
-
I ended up purchasing a lightly used Sako SS 85 .270 wsm. synthetic stock. I really love the smooth action, the balance and ergonomics of the rifle. The cheek peice fits me perfectly when I bring it up which has been less comfortable with other rifles. I'm going to have a Simms recoil pad installed, adjust the trigger down to 2 and top it off with my Zeiss Conquest SS 4.5-14 *50 scope and take it to the range to site in!! Man I am excited!! I also purchased all the fixings to re-load which I've never done before. It will be fun going through the process of finding that perfect load. Mike

I would leave the spot and find another. Mike

Bobcats are really tough to do!! It looks good overall, however the eyes don't look that real to me, the pupils look a little cross eyed or something. Just my honest opinion. Mike

I have owned a dozen or more Remgington 700's in all different calibers from 22-250 to 7RUM. The fact of the matter is you can get a lemon in any rifle, any caliber. I personally believe the Remington is, and always has been the best production rifle there is. Now, thats not to say that I dont buy other rifles... I do and/or have owned a couple of Kimbers, still own a Mauser based custom (thats my 270 wsm in fact) and even a Winchester in .243... Year after year I go back to my Remingtons though and I think they are the best. In all actuality, all you really need at 100 yards is a one inch group, and the rifle needs to hold that group out to your intended distance. If your rifle will shoot MOA consistantly at any distance, you are golden. Plus, if you decided to upgrade parts (barrel, stock, bottom metal, trigger) every body in the world knows how to A. Get ahold of Remington parts and B. MOST gun smiths have vast experience with Remington rifles. If, by chance you do get a lemon and are having a hard time getting it to shoot, send it to me and I will develop a load. Also, getting it rebarreled isnt that expensive (althought I know you are trying to stay away from that.) Good point about most gunsmiths knowing Remington inside and out!

Hey Casey, why would I go with the remington 700 over the sako or Weatherby Mark V or eve Tikka? From what I understand, remington barrels can be lemons or shooters and that is why they do not guarantee anything under an inch at 100 yds. They may have one of the better actions which is useful for custom barrels, but why risk getting a lemon barrel when I can be guarranteed a performer? I'm not saying your wrong, I've got 2 buddies that told me to go Remington 700 as well! The guy at Sportsmans warehouse I talked to the other day said he once purchased a remington 700 .270 that shot 3" at 100 yds, yet he still tried to sell me the remington? Is there something I'm missing?

You've got a bad 2-pt gene problem in that area! Hurry and shoot them before it spreads too much! Cool pics though! Mike

He is a hard horned 6*6. My guess would be 300 to 320. The bull I tagged last year was about that size and scored 317

This custom .308 has a mcmillan heavy sporter 308 win barrel. The barrel was chambered, recessed crowned, and fitted at Harry Lawson's Gunsmithing in Tucson. He also lapped the lugs on the bolt. The barrel was duracoated and painted matte black. The trigger is set at a crisp 2 lbs. The stock is a boyd's laminate in pepper. It is bedded with devcon and the barrel is free floated. It also has a limb saver recoil pad which makes the felt recoil feel like a .243 It comes with leupold 1 piece base and 1-inch rings. This is a shooter with many groups during testing coming in under and inch. It liked 168gr Nosler BT and 165gr speer btsp. The barrel has under 250 rounds through it. I just purchased this rifle from "Whisper", a coues whitetail member from this website. I met him in Casa Grande and was very happy with how it looked and what came with it. When I got home and started handling it and putting it up to my cheek I discovered I didn't really like the ergonomics of the stock. The front part of the stock where my left hand holds is a little thicker than I'm used to. I've got small hands so maybe that is why? Anyway, I was kind of wanting a Remington model 700 .300 Ultra mag all along to build my own rifle so I ended up buying one and now need to sell the 308 to pay for a barrel, new stock, etc. I negotiated the price down to $650.00 for everything and will not sell it for less than $650.00 I will also include the scope that came with my new .300 RUM for an extra $25.00 Sold for $650 from another site. I live in Gilbert. It comes with the following: 308 Win Reloading dies and other Redding Type S Full length sizer Redding Type S Neck sizer Redding bushings for sizers - 0.330, 0.333, 0.334, 0.335 Hornady custom grade new demension die set (zip spindel expander ball broken) Hornady Microadjust for bullet seater RCBS Precision Mic 150+ peices of Lapua Brass (not shown in pic) Bullets - 15 Sierra 150gr gameking - 45 Speer 165gr BTSP - 50 Berger 168gr VLD hunting Email, call or text me.
