    Archery Tips

Redbeard, Although I agree w/ you that there are factors outside of a bowhunters control that MAY result in a wounded animal at longer distance shots, I do not believe the distance an animal is shot from determines how good of a hunter one is. Different situations, terrains, and conditions will determine how close a bowhunter can get to his quarry. A good and ethical bowhunter will make a good judgement call based on the situation and his skill. I do practice up to distances of 80 yds w/ my bow and if I had a bull elk or even coues buck at 60 yds broadside w/ little or no wind and felt I could not stalk any closer, I would confidently take the shot. Am I an unskilled hunter for not being able to get any closer? Well, I guess it would depend on the terrain and conditions? If I make a good shot at 60 yds what are the chances of that buck/bulls vitals being in a different area by the time the arrow arrives? If I'm shooting my Mathews ultra2 at 300fps, the chances are very slim his vitals will escape.

    Archery Tips

BASS, I believe that most arrows w/ a standard broadhead would have enough weight and kinetic energy to make a kill at any distance if hit in the vitals. Even though an arrow will lose speed, it will never lose enough speed to prohibit it from entering the vitals because of it's weight. Just my opinion. That said, I agree w/ most that there are too many variables shooting over 40 yds or so than can easily result in a wounded deer. If I have a 120" coues buck broadside looking at me at 60 yds am I going to hold off because it is too far? I won't answer that question here.

    Bowhunting Near Payson

Bowhunter12, I think you will find that most members on this site are not willing to give specific info on good areas. It is not that we are trying to be rude, but a hunter works hard and puts a lot of time, money and effort into finding great areas. When we give specifics, not only are we putting more hunting pressure on our honey holes, but may be causing more disturbance to another hunters honeyhole. I am a very serious bowhunter and I believe hunting pressure is the number one cause in ruining a bucks pattern. My advice would be to visit azgfd.com and click on the where to hunt tab. Click on unit 22 and it gives great starting points for scouting in that area.

    packs/ gear.

I love the Danner's TFX hunter light boots and I really like the Camelback Commander pack. Holds 100oz water and has lots of carrying space. Has a place for a tripod, and 2 really convenient compartments attached to the belt strap for easy access.

    Scent Eliminator Sprays

I agree that the scent eliminator sprays do not eliminate scent 100% but I believe they help some so I use them. It may also help the hunter psychologically. With regards to treestands, it is so important to spray your boot soles down good or wear plastic bags around your shoes. I have counted many times where a deer has been sniffing where I had been walking, do the snort wheeze blow and take off.

    Mineral Lick and Mule Deer

Mule deer love bashas water softener salt pellets. Don't get the big salt blocks as the deer do not go for those as much from my experience. I've found that once that salt has soaked into the ground, they like to chew and paw the dirt/salt mixture more than the plain salt.
  14. Coueskiller, Awesome pics. That buck is a toad!!! I think he will be a 95-105" buck when he is done! Congrats on that pic. Hope you stick him. Mike

    Zeiss 15x45 What's the worth

Allen, No offense taken whatsoever. I was just trying to explain why I though higher powered binos are not good for around the neck glassing. The 8* or 10* are best because the view is more stable. I've tried glassing far off w/ my 15*56's w/out a tripod and it was not effective in the least. Whatever works for you I guess.

I'll guess 88". Lots of charachter but won't score incredibly well.

    Zeiss 15x45 What's the worth

Allen, The jumpiness of your view is not determined by the weight of the binos very much at all. It is determined by the power. If you have ever used a video camera you know that if you are zoomed in all the way, the picture is jumping all over the place and you feel you need a tripod. When you are zoomed out all the way the picture is as still as can be, even if you move the camera a little bit. Same concept w/ binos.

    Mathews or Bowtech

Mathews for several reasons. 1. Resell is easier-holds value better 2. Harmonic damper technology-decreases vibration and kick 3. The mathews wooden handle fits my hand perfectly 4. Lifetime warranty- Mathews stand behind their bows. Bowtec has some nice bows but they are typically less forgiving w/ a little more speed and definately more kick/vibration.

    Zeiss 15x45 What's the worth

Allen, I don't know how you can use the 15*45 for around the neck glassing either? I've tried that w/ my swarov 15*56's and it just doesn't work. The view is way to jumpy.

    Zeiss 15x45 What's the worth

I would think the field of view would be a little small but I really have no experience w/ them.
