From what I've heard, imediately after losing their velvet, the bucks testoserone levels will begin to increase which will cause them to be more standoffish towards other bucks. The bucks will begin to establish dominance. The only thing they are waiting on is for the does to come into estrus. TAM and I watched some bucks sparring in October last year as well. They were little forkies though.

Heck yeah you can call in a big buck in October! Deer are naturally curious and if a big buck hears some major sparring going on, he will probably come to investigate. Never done it myself yet but I sure plan to this december.

A little off the subject here but have any of you ever tried tanning your own hides using the indian boiled brain method? Tried it myself on a deer hide years ago, didn't turn out that great.

New Competition!!!

You need to shoot that deer to get the measurment from the top of his back to the bottom of his belly. That could be a record. Awesome main beams as well. -
That is a cool looking Muley. I'm sure he had a major adrenaline rush that will continue for some time.

Any change that is the same buck?

If I was a betting man I would guess 90" buck. He does appear a little thin horned, his main beams don't appear to curve around that much, his g2's are pretty decent but it looks like his g3's are a little short. Very tough buck to pass on first day of the hunt for me. I'd probably let the arrow fly. -

Nice looking buck! Looks like he has a decent spread on him. He could be 85"-105". Tough to tell at that angle. -
Good mass, awesome G2's, good main beams, I will guess 105". It is hard to tell because the picture is blurry but he looks to be pretty symetrical. Should net close to the gross.

I'm just messing around. I know it is not a deer.

BCoover must have misidentified a does ears for a spike buck. I zoomed in on the pic and it is a dead doe in the background.

That quote is too deep for my little brain. -
There are no deer around Mercers ranch anyway. That would be the last place in unit 32 I would hunt.

I should have married me an apache woman.

That is one incredible experience!!! That story can be told to your children and children's children and will be a priceless memory for ages. I had an experience happen last year in Sept. I was sitting in a treestand over a little tank hunting deer. It was evening and the elk were bugling. I was bored so I started cow calilng a little bit to see if I couldn't call in a bull. After about 10 minutes I decided I was sick of sitting so I started climbing down my treesteps. When I was about 5 feet from the ground I heard a sound behind me. I turned my head and there was a calf elk about 10 feet from the base of the tree looking around. I watched it for a few seconds and then gave a little mew w/ my call. It then looked at me and let out a little mew. I was really surprised that it didn't take off running. It's mom was about 40 yds off mewing like crazy trying to get her baby away from danger and her baby was not being very obedient. I stayed there for a while calling to this calf thouroughly enjoying the experience. My hands started getting tired in the position I was in so I decided to climb down figuring the calf would bolt for sure. To my surprise, I dropped to the ground and the calf did not move. It inched it's nose towards me sniffing. I put my hand up to touch it's nose and it backed off just a little bit. It's mom then came in closer and finally the little calf decided it better obey and they both took off.

TREESTANDMAN replied to Kaffer62's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
That is quite interesting. I wonder what kind of a non-typical brute he would have grown up to be had he not been murdered in his infancy. j/k. Great job on taking him w/ your bow. I have yet to stalk and arrow a buck. Those should be some tender steaks. -

Pending P&Y World Record Typical Elk
TREESTANDMAN replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Those are some huge animals but it doesn't seem to me like that bull is big enough be the archery typical WORLD record.
