What Sweet Pic's
TREESTANDMAN replied to 25-06's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Here is a pic of a bear I got from my new digital trail camera over the weekend. -
Last year TAM and I got pictures of a 90+ buck both w/ and w/out velvet coming into some salt. This buck has pretty good main beams, average eyeguards, a split g2 on his right antler, and a better than average g3. Lately I've been wearing down some pretty good boot rubber trying to find his sheds. I invited Josh Epperson to go shed hunting in this area to see if we could find this bucks sheds hoping also to learn a little from this shed hunting master. I kinda figured we wouldn't find this particular bucks sheds just because the terrain is so thick and it would be like finding a needle in a haystack. To my amazement Josh found the right side to this buck w/ the split g2 and offered it to me. I declined saying it should be his since he had found it and once again he insisted that I keep it since I had pictures of this buck. I just want to publicly thank josh for his kind act of helping me hunt for this bucks shed and then unselfishly giving it to me. Josh is a genuinely nice guy with integrity and an amazing woodsman. I would recommend him in a heartbeat for anyone looking for guide service.

Time to start another coues biology topic. I'm curious to know what your opinions are on a bucks range? I have been told that typically coues bucks have a very small home range and that only during the rut do they venture out of that range in search of does. Would most of you agree that this is true or do any of you think coues bucks will change their home ranges in adapting to drought, lack of food, water shortages, etc? I do not have enough hunting experience to provide a valid opinon on this yet but I'm sure some of the veterans here could provide some good insight.?

shafts alluminium or carbon or both
TREESTANDMAN replied to newbee's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Carbons have more speed and durability but my experience has taught me that aluminums are able to control a broadhead better. I have gone back to aluminums and am very pleased. I'm sure getting new broadheads could remedy the problems I had w/ carbons but I like the muzzy's too much. -
I've harvested only 2 coues bucks, a 65" and a spike. Both w/ my mathews ultra 2. This January I had a 100+ buck come into my treestand but couldn't get a good shot. I have pictures of that same buck live and TAM will be posting them shortly. TAM saw that same buck from the same treestand on the same day but once again he did not give TAM a shot. My perspective on coues hunting has since changed and I have evolved into a trophy hunter.

That is awesome kwp!!! He has made some pretty steady progress in main beam length and mass. Who knows, maybe this year his rack will jump up in inches like Dan King's shed demo in the shed hunting section on this website. Great finds!!
-
I just emailed Amanda some more pics from the field of this shed that I feel show the mass little better
-
That is a good bull! Congrats. What did he score
-
Do they have the same characheristics? It is possible for a newer shed from the same buck to be a little smaller I believe. Was the plastic tag attached to the shed?

More to come. We are spacing them out so you all don't get board during the off season. -
25-06 Do they look like they are from the same buck? Are they brown? Are they larger than the other matched set you posted? Congrats on the find! That is awesome!!!!

Aerial photos online

TAM and I have been using this website for a while and it is an incredibly useful scouting tool. We use it to find saddles, ridgelines, bowles, benches, and water in the areas we hunt or are looking to hunt. In fact, TAM used this tool to find the hotspot he killed his buck in this last december. The combination of this website, a gps, and a trail camera or two can make a world of difference. -
No we didn't.
-
Yep, those are from my stealth cam. $50 at sportsmans right now.
-
The shed pics don't show the mass like I had hoped.
-
Very good posts everyone! This is valuable information. Thankyou Ben Brown and Amanda for sharing the survey findings and everyone else for their opinions.

TAM and I have had a blast w/ our trail cameras!! We have pictures of two other lions in the daytime and one other lion at night all in different locations. I was able to take a bear last year w/ my bow and I give the credit to our trail cameras which showed us what time of day and how often these bears would come to the spring. TAM just figured out how to work the scanner at his work so everyone here will be able to enjoy some of our best pictures soon. The lion experience I had was one I will never forget as I'm sure AZ4life will also testify. You can read about it using the search option for "lion experiences" on this site. -
I shot my first Tom on Saturday w/ my bow. I clucked him in from a hundred yards away or so and hit him at 40 yards running shot. My arrow destroyed one lung and went through the gut. The beard is 8" long. Spring turkey has become one of my favorite hunts now, what a blast!!! The Gobblers are going nuts.

This shed that will be posted soon has got some good mass indicating a fairly old buck. I'm hoping this year he will jump the 100 inch benchmark. The funny thing is that in both pictures we got of this guy in velvet and hard hardhorned he appears quite thin-horned. The actual shed as you will see appears much more massive.
-
I think you are right Amanda about 12-13" inside spread.
-
Well put AZ Packhorse!
-
I would guess maybe 14 or 15 inches.
-
Amanda, On this bucks left antler, would you count it's left g4 as a point? An would you take the last circumference measurment between it's g3 and g4? I just don't know if you would count that small a point as a g4?
