Jan Bowhunting bucks and boars
TREESTANDMAN replied to couesdiehard's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I've always been confused why so many hunters don't like pig meat. I agree that the pigs themselves smell pretty bad, kind of like a watered down skunk. If the proper field care is taken however, I don't think there is a better meat that javelina. And my family and extended family would agree. I spot and stalk pigs like most everyone else. I've also had quite a few good experience calling them in after they are bugered. I guess everyones tastebuds are different, but everyone I know that has tried it, has absolutely loved it. -
Great buck! What is the inside spread on that bad boy?

Just a word of advice. If you have got a good stand. Do not tell other people period, even friends. I have made that mistake before. I've got pictures of several people I know at my salt stand areas.

Bowsniper, Double congrats on that buck!!!! That is the buck of very few hunters life time and to top it all off, with a bow!!!!!!

Hey, you've go to admit these heated topics are kind of entertaining.

NEED HELP ON A HUGE BUCK!!!!!!
TREESTANDMAN replied to southpaw's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
It is good that you are being persistent in your search for him. I have no idea what you did after the shot but I have learned that waiting a good half hour or more is very important in archery hunting. I have a friend that is impatient and he has not found several animals because he goes right after them. Good luck on finding your buck. -

I will be out bowhunting Jan 1st. It is always hard to pass on the small bucks w/ a bow. -
The indians are taking advantage of the situation. There are limited elk, and it is very hard to get drawn anywhere in the US so they are taking advantage of these things to get as much $$ as they possibly can. Sure it is price gouging.

If your going to make chorizo, don't waste pig meat doing it. Use bear or deer meat. The pig meat is too good bbq'd to make chorizo or sausage. -
Yeah, I kinda thought it was a wierd idea too, carrying your can on your hip. I usually just carry some toilet paper in my pack. hee hee. Plus I'm not worried about covering up my "bleats" while I'm out there. I would say it sounds more like a buck grunt.

Yeah, 35k for an elk tag is not gouging is it?

I have a question about circumference measurments. I know you are supposed to measure the circumference 4 times on each main beam. My question is what if the buck is nontypical and has 3 or 4 main beams? Would you then measure a total of 12 or even 16 circumference measurments?

Coues in Rut in the Rain?
TREESTANDMAN replied to matthewp45's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
It obviously depends on the magnitude of the rain. If it is raining hard, the deer are going to hunker down and wont be moving, even during the rut. If it is sprinkling, the bucks will be chasing does. -
Recurveman, What and how big was this critter? Let me guess, it was a spike.

I've never pit bbq'd pig but I've also heard it was great. I just marinate the meat in big apple bbq sauce and cook it ouside on the grill. My family and extended family loves the stuff. I'd like to try pit bbq'd my next pig. -
Jason, Good luck hunting the San Carlos buddy and thanks for the economics lesson.

Jamaro, Can I take a wild guess and say you voted for Kerry and Napolitano? Obviously our opinions differ on the reservation situation. I've shared mine openly, this is how I feel, I take nothing back.

I love huntings Javies. I especially enjoy blowing that varmint call and having them rush at you. If anyone wants to trade or donate pig meat for deer or bear meat let me know. If a javelina is field dressed correctly, nothing beats the meat. -
Jason, The key word here is "years ago". We conquered them just like their tribes conquered other tribes. The government has been overly generous w/ them. My comments on lazyness are probably uncalled for but these past injustices commited by the US government are water under the bridge. There is no more need for the government to pay them back or treat them better than the average man. It bugs me when the topic of "what the whitemen did to the indians" is brought up as a rationalization for all of their benefits. That happend before all of us were born. (Except maybe Lark). Future generations should not have to pay for older generations mistakes.

Archery pig and deer in 22 for me. There is nothing I like more than BBQ'd javelina. -
Scoring coues racks
TREESTANDMAN replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Thank you Amanda, that makes perfect sense. Just a suggestion Amanda, you might want to change or add some wording in the scoring section. It doesn't clarify that 4 circumference measurments need to be taken on (both) main beams. It just says 4 circ. measurements. That could be taken incorrectly as 4 total measurments. -
On a more serious note, I believe that pretty much all units in the state will carry 100+ inch bucks. Some areas have higher deer densities than others however. There are 4 things I look for when deciding on an area to hunt. 1. How accessible is the area to other hunters? 2. What water and food sources are available 3. And what predator impact is there in that area. 4. And most important, am I seeing good bucks? When a coues buck reaches it's 6th or 7th year I would guess that most coues bucks would score 90+ inches. For archery I like unit 27 in the thick stuff. For rifle i'ts all good.

Yeah, the white man put them on the res years and years ago. You call res land the most undesireable land??? I agree that parts of res lands are trashy due to the indians not maintaining the land, but many parts of the res are the most beautiful areas in AZ. What ever happend to all men being created equal? If Indians are able to hunt whiteman land as AZ residents at the same price residents pay, should not the whiteman then be able to hunt indian land the same way? Even though this discrimination happpend years ago, we are still to this day being blamed for injustice and their poverty. They recieve welfare from the goverment, free scholarships, overcharge the whiteman for everything including driving through the res to get to national forest, yet when you drive through the res you see trashy yards and houses w/ nice vehicles and quads with beer bottles everywhere. One of my best friends is an Indian, and I know some who are very hard workers and great people. I just do not agree w/ the benefits indians are given just because they are indians. I think that as a result many of them are a spoiled and lazy people. This is going to be a fun topic. I can feel the heat coming. This is a large generalization, I know that many indians are hard workers and great people.
