TREESTANDMAN replied to Elmacho's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I would have said unit 22 between rye and payson but the willow fire took that option out for now. -
I hunt high country in Dec/Jan and the coues stay put. Like TAM said, it may be different w/ more snow.

Some of the best experiences I have ever had have been from treestands. I've called in does, watched bucks chase does around, been able to listen to them communicate, watched how they react to noise and weather, watched how they react to elk coming in. I have learned a lot from stand hunting and have great memories.

To an small extent I agree with what is being said. I love watching deer at a close distance unspooked from a treestand and "baiting deer" with salt or grain has allowed me that opportunity. Baiting deer requires time and effort and money and needs to be thought out strategically, especially in AZ where the deer concentrations aren't quite like Texas for instance. If you guys think baiting is unethical then how is sitting water not? All deer have to drink. I have hunted salt for years and I feel it is ethical because I have to buy the salt bags, decide where to establish my salt plots, haul the heavy bags over my shoulder to my sites. Not only that but it gives the deer minerals they need to grow nice racks and blood circulation. I also love glassing for deer, spot and stalking, calling, and still hunting. There is a time for everything. It depends on the attitude of the hunter. If the hunter "baits" deer because he is greedy and lazy and can't get a buck any other way I believe it to be unethical. If he tries baiting because he enjoys seeing deer more frequently from a treestand, enjoys watching them fight and play, then I think it is fine. Last year was the first year ever I tried grain, I had no bucks come in but the does were fun to watch. I killed a buck chasing a doe coming into salt from a treestand last year in december.

Yeah and how about 137 3/8? -
Lots of bears there. Just find a water tank or source that is close to lots of prickly pear and call within the vicinity.

Muskrat, I have done a lot of cold calling and had very little luck with predators coming in. I have had a few coyotes and owls come in but that is about it. I have had 100% success calling in coyotes that I have seen and then started calling. That just goes to show that if they aren't pretty close by they probably won't come in. Just don't be discouraged when you try calling and nothing shows. I have not really had the patience to call for 45 minutes-1 hour for bear and lion like they say to call for.

I shoot the muzzy 3 blade 100 gr's because they seem to stay intact pretty well. I think pretty much any broadhead out there will do the job just fine. Shot placement is everything. Man I wish I could archery hunt elk this year!!!!! ENJOY

				Need advice on handguns
TREESTANDMAN replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Handgun Hunting for Coues Deer
I was drawn for a december coues hunt so I will be buying a rifle instead. I just don't think my 30-30 will do the job on this hunt. -
I've seen a lot of good bucks in that unit. One of them was easily over 100. I hunt the San Pedro side of the Galiuro's. There is an area up there that produces a lot of bucks in OCT/NOV. If you want info on how to get there, email me.

Good question muskrat. I think it was only non-residents. The ones drawn are on the list on the g&f website. Did you get drawn? Man there are quite a few of you that were drawn for archery bull!! The day that I get drawn for early archery bull will be one of the best days of my life. I am happy w/ my deer tag though. This will be the first december rifle hunt for me ever.

				Hearing magnifiers
TREESTANDMAN replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I do a lot of stand hunting and for me I usually hear them coming in. I just thought if they work, it might give me a pretty good edge on the deer and allow me to be more prepared in my positioning. Probably wont get any if I don't see any good reviews. -
I was just curious to see if any of you have tried using those hearing magnifiers advertised in cabelas magazine and if so, what did you think?
 -
Coues addict, This will indirectly affect areas south of the colorado. Many hunters will change the areas they put in for due to this new change.
 -
For me it was 1st choice unit 31 late whitetail. 2nd choice unit 22 late whitetail. Elk, Archery 22 south bull 1st choice antelope:unit 1 rifle Sheep:27 Buffalo:Raymond ranch turkey:22/23 Can't wait for the draw!!!!!
 -
At least that gives us some brief hope for this years draw.
 -
LARK, You seem to be good w/ words. Why don't you go to the press and try to get an article published in the Arizona Republic or Tribune.
 -
Are you saying that the 10 percent does not apply now to BULL ELK hunts south of the colorado river? The way I understand it is that the 10% will no longer apply to only the units north of the colorado river for BULL ELK.
