Trail camera pictures for June
TREESTANDMAN replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Yeah, my buddy and I have done a lot of homework and put in a lot of time this off season. I'd love to take one of the bears but as the pears ripen up, they will probably be moving away from these areas and not hitting water as much. -
Trail camera pictures for June
TREESTANDMAN posted a topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
This month I've gotten quite a few pictures of bucks from salt and water. From the most recent pictures I have gotten, more than half of the role were bucks. I've also gotten some pictures of Bear coming into the water. At one tank, the bear keeps turning my camera away from the water. He has done this the last two times I have gotten my film. I think he is a small adult boar based on his smaller ears and short snout. From another tank there are 2 cinnomon adult bears coming into water, the one appears to be an adult sow and the other a boar. -
Yep, thats how my buddy and I do our pre scouting scouting.

I love that website.

After smoking the magical Peyote weed. The medicine has inspired me to be called "Venadote".

It depends on the area you are in. Typically there are many snakes around rivers. You will find them in the morning out sunning themselves on rocks. After it starts getting hot they will head for cover under boulders, holes, etc. They start coming out again in the evening time to hunt for mice etc. I would not be overly alarmed or worried about them. Wear good boots and thick pants and you should be just fine. Just be careful where you step. Remember, in Arizona there are hundreds of different snakes and only 2 are poisonous. The rattlers, and the coral snakes which are very rare and docile.

Being a treestand hunter I have developed the opinion that with coues deer at least, the moon phase has little or no affect. I have had coues deer come into my salt all day long during a full moon phase day and vice versa. I do know that the spotlighting is much better for elk on a full moon night though.

Well, I just got back from the Tohono Oodam rez. Man that area has a good concentration of coues bucks. In order to hunt that area you have to be a tohono oodam tribal member I was told. I'm in the process of becoming an official tohono Oodam tribe member.

In the past it has sometimes been much sooner than they estimate.

For several years I shot aluminum XX75's w/ the uninocks using a 3 blade 100 grain muzzy broadhead and my arrows would fly straight and hit very consistent. A lot of articles and hunters were promoting the carbon arrow at the time so I decided to switch to carbons for more speed and durability. When I switched over I was very impressed w/ the speed and accuracy with field points but when I put the broadheads on, my arrows would not group at all. I fine tuned by bow w/ the broad heads on, but still the carbons would not control the broad heads. Have any of you experienced this? Since then I have switched back to aluminums and they group really well. I shoot a mathews Ultra 2 at about 66 lbs. I really like how durable the carbons are and the speed but I don't think they control a broadhead like an aluminum. What do you guys think?

Thanks backcountry, I might check it out.

Hows about telling me where that springs is and I will do your scouting for you. Don't worry, I will tell you if I get a picture of that buck

Need advice on handguns
TREESTANDMAN replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Handgun Hunting for Coues Deer
Thank you for all of your valuable input. I think it is unanimous that the .357 mag revolver is the prefered handgun for my purposes. Which brands have the best quality/warranties etc? AZ Guide I may take you up on that offer. -

I kind of prefer the looks of the revolvers. -
Wow!!! What kind of terrain did you find that shed in? If I were you I would do some major scouting in that area. I would get trail cams on any waterholes closeby to see if that toad is still alive.

He's not too bad.

Hey Ernesto, You mentioned you harvested a deer last year? Did you post it on the photo page?
-
I've thought about it but I'm not sure if the pellets would penetrate? The ammo sure is a lot cheaper though. Never could hit nothin w/ a sling shot.
-
For Coues deer I prefer my 22 caliber bolt action with a 2* Leupold scope. You can hardly feel the kick.

Come on Back Country, where is the picture?

Thanks for the valuable info. I'm sure you are right about changing my broadhead. I have so many arrows and broadheads though that I will be sticking w/ aluminums for a while at least.

I would rather hunt and be in unit 1 more than any other unit in the state. It may not be a great unit for coues deer but it is great for everything else and the most beautiful area in the United States.

Yeah, apparently because of the drought conditions they will not be offering any deer hunts this year in New Mexico. It hasn't posted on the website yet but should be there tomarrow.

I just heard the game and fish department decided to close all deer hunts in New Mexico this year.
