  1. That's a great Idea but it doesn't happen unless its a high profile area. I don't hold it against a rancher to kill critters that art killing their cattle. I agree we don't need, nor do I want wolves. My issue is once a rancher moves his cattle from one pasture to another they shut off waters, hurting the wildlife. They often over graze public to save their private. Not all their fault since Forest services doesn't hold them to anything in grazing allotment agreements. Its nice to see some consequences. But unfortunately the only reason there was consequences was from wolves being high profile.
  2. I'm not a wolf fan but I do like to see some consequences for public land ranchers who violate laws killing wolves, lions, bears or whatever. Ranchers are good folks and do a good service to us hunters but a lot abuse the sh!t out of there leases so maybe this will help some of them shape up a bit.
  3. If you want the best gun in the end rebarrel the Remington 700. Same bolt face for 6.5 creed or 7-08. Your looking at $250-330 for a barrel and $200-300 to get it chambered and put together. I would get a new new trigger too Another option would be to dress up what you have, new trigger, and quality stock will really help accuracy. But if you buy a cheap gun you will want a better one later so my advice is buy something better Rugers. They shoot descent but there is a reason they are priced where they are.

    Technology and Animal Quality

Yes technology has increased harvest on the older class animals. I see it in NM. There are other factors as well. More people are trophy hunting. People like me are passing the little bucks and bulls and hunting for the trophy thus increasing harvest on older age class animals. The increase in The outfitting industry with the technology. The top end optics, planes flying for governors tags, lots of governors tags.and they are good at what they do. Drought was the biggest factor with NM elk quality last season. No winter moisture killed antler growth on elk. In NM the tag #s in our best units have not increased but elk population has increased. Quality has decreased at the same time, which is related to technology. I think drought is the bigger driving factor for quality tho.

    Swarovski 10x42 question + vortex 15x50

Clarity, no stress on eyes, you will spot more 10x42 swaros than you will 15 vipers. The clarity is what catches the small details like a twitch of the ear. It’s stuff to cough up the money I know but you won’t regret it. Vipers don’t compare to swaros, razors are a closer comparison but still not up to swaros level. I’ve used both switching back and it’s a noticeable difference. Swaros are like Toyota’s they hold their value too.

    Effective glassing range

That’s a tuff one, depends on how well you want to “identify”. If they are skylined or are in good places to spot with 10x out to 1k maybe more. If they are in shadows and brush can be much less, lots of variables. my hunting buddies use 10x and I use 15x’s. I usually have to identify for them when they spot.

I want to hunt feral piggies, New Mexico?

Most of the feral pigs by Animas are on private. Not many on the public land but a few get killed on public. It’s a iffy kind of deal, you can spend a lot of looking for not many feral. Not sure what the private charges to hunt them.

    First timer

Yeah we had great hunt killed a couple guys 105ish one guy got a 113, a passed on a couple of 100++ bucks looking for bigger and ended up killing smaller the last day. It happens when your picky. We were approximately 150 miles south east of Agua Prieto in thorn scrub type country. It’s was great and I would do again but the guy who set it up doesn’t do it anymore

I went on a DIY hunt in Mexico here's what I know. We paid for the license and access to the ranches everything else was on our own. 1) You need to have someone outfitter or contact that really know the ropes, it is essential. You want someone in your party that can speak the language, that is very important. 2)Gun permits, vehicle registration all your paperwork has to match EXACTLY. Your situation with the registration in the company could give you problems. Ammo separate from guns. 3) Don't take standard calibers, Things like 308, 223, 30-30. You cant just go buy ammo in Mexico some of the check points will try to seize your ammo just because they want it. Take stuff like .257, short mags anything that is not real common. We had to buy ourselves out of a check point because the officials wanted our 30-30 ammo. 4) They take American , but no your conversion rates because they will try to get the best of you. At some point somewhere someone will try to screw you out of your money, its a way of life there. Just grin and take it, that's why having someone who speaks and knows the ropes will really help you with that. One time fishing they charged us like $50 bucks to fly in to a lake. They charged $400 to fly out, we forgot to negotiate that, oh well just laugh it off we did. 5) Once you get away from the border towns the Mexican people are good people, treat them good, tip good they need it. Driving through you will see its a real 3rd world country, its an eye opener. Simple things we take for granite like buying ice, its different there. 6) things will go wrong expect it, enjoy it. We were suppose to stay at the main house which was really nice, the main owner was having a party kick us out to the other side of the ranch in an old Vaquero's shack. Once again oh well what do you do, it turned out to be a blast and a fun camp. 7)Its a great fun experience and a Coues hunters dream, don't stress just take care of what everyone above has said and you will have a great time. happy hunting
  11. I would stick with what you have. Your this far down the rabbit hole why stop now if the gun shoots good. I with you on the fire forming, it’s a bit of a pain, I can barely make myself trim cases let alone fire forming. I have a 6.5-270 and it’s a nice round, kind of a pointless wildcat with all the established 6.5 variants around now, but it shoots good no reason to rebarrel until it doesn’t shoot.

    Ballistics Calculations???

I couldn’t agree more. Use apps to get starting place at the range then tweak app to match your real range drops. Only thing you have to adjust is for elevation after that as far as drops go. Most of my hunting is 4000-7500 ft and it’s only about 1/4 MOA adjustment

    Moon Cycles and Deer

From what I have experienced full moons greatly impacted hunting and impact Coues hunting more than other species. I think a few other things come into play, temps, and hunting pressure. I have had 2 coues hunts in full moons. On one we were seeing bucks everyday then the moon went full and we didn’t see another buck the last 4 days of the hunt. This was also public land regular hunt so the hunting pressure played a role. The pressure with moon made for tuff hunting. I always plan my hunts around the moon cycles. It’s not the only factor but for Coues hunting I think it’s worth paying attention to.

    Late Hunt - Rutting???

Correct that the rut is controlled by day length/ photo period. How ever day time rut activity is greatly influenced by weather. When it’s hotter they are still rutting but more activity at night than day, cooler weather the more active they will be all day. I believe the weather has less influence on Coues than other species. I watched bucks sparing and chasing does (little bucks) last weekend in northern coues units. Day length shorter as you go north so those deer will start earlier and you can see some rut activity in late December. When I hunted 100 miles south of the border it was February 5-10 and they were in full rut
  15. Life on the internet. Not that big of deal, pictures get recirculated with different stories al the time. Congrats to hunters last year,
