    Mount Lemmon

I don't typically like hunting 33 because of the number of people you run into, but I think that for a quick day hunt it might work. Would usually just hunt the oracle area since I know the landscape pretty well but hunting in 100-degree heat doesn't sound too appealing....

    Mount Lemmon

Hey everyone - With archery season just around the corner for OTC I have a trip planned out to head up north and hunt for an extended weekend on weekend one. I go to school in Tucson and won't be able to make the trip back up north for the second weekend and was considering doing some hunting in Tucson. I want to stay away from the heat and so I was going to head up towards Mount Lemmon. My question is have you all seen coues or mule deer as high as the timberline at Mount Lemmon? If so, is it worth hunting up there or is it beyond crowded this time of year? Really appreciate any advice you all can pass on. Thanks!

    33/37 Archery Hunters

Ran into a group of them while deer hunting in unit 33. Had 4 of the whoofing at me at 10 yards, but my tag isn't good until the end of February. Probably won't hunt the same spot because it took some ridiculous hiking to get in there. If I get to the last day of my hunt I might give it a shot. Good luck.

    Upgrades

Was curious to see what you all thought in terms of upgrades I should make. I have a couple hundred dollars to spend and after my first few weekends mule deer hunting I know I want to make some changes. I have a fairly new bow, but it was a starter bow which was meant to be upgraded. I can shoot pretty accurately out to 60 yards (8-inch spread). However, I read that a drop rest is the most beneficial upgrade to improve accuracy since I currently have a wicker basket. Also, I would have enough money left over to invest in a single pin sight which would allow me to shoot out to possibly 70 - 80 yards. I do get somewhat confused with the multi pins but they aren't that big of a deal. I just upgraded my boots because of how difficult the terrain is here, but I primarily have Realtree patterned insulated camo to use. It is pretty dated (my dads from early 2000's I'm in college so I try to save wherever I can). I noticed this weekend while hiking how difficult it could be to hike with this heavy weighted jacket. As I hiked I found myself continuing to shed layers having to stop and throw my jacket into my bag and when the wind picked up put it back on. I was thinking about upgrading to some camo that allowed me to dump heat and ones that are wind resistant and ultra light. I considered Kuiu because it has a lifetime warranty and I experienced first hand how quickly the terrain out here tears up clothing. These two are my big considerations at the time and I'm curious if you all were in my position how you would spend the money and what you would recommend!

Also, do grunt calls work on these bucks during the rut? I've used them to close the gap on whitetail, but since this is my first mule deer hunt I have no idea.

Yeah, I start school tomorrow so I have to wait until Saturday to start but I did some e scouting and Reddington road looks like the place I'll check out. I'm curious has anyone hunted the south side of the road and gone towards the national park opposed to making your way up north from the road? I know you have to get through the really steep basin from that so-called river they have there but have never been any further than that Tanque Verde hike in regards to going south.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Most likely will head up that way this weekend then... Will follow up with updates.

I've been on Reddington Road through Tanque Verde a couple times before, but have never gone too far in. Are you allowed to stay parked there through the day overnight without any permits?

If its that populated maybe I'll stick to another spot. I was scouting a few spots earlier this season that I thought were fairly remote turns out I hiked back onto a trail and soon enough had hikers walking through the basin I was glassing. Thanks for all the advice on muley's I've hunted whitetail in Louisiana my whole life but this is a whole new ball game.

Thanks, I will probably end up trying both. This weekend I'm going to give Tucson Mountain Park a shot because some friends recommended this spot as well. Will follow up with how it goes.

Yeah, I've searched through AZGFD. I know how to do research and have hunted other big game before .... Was more so looking for personal experience

    Tucson Units

Hi guys, I was looking to do my first mule deer OTC hunt this month once I get back to campus (University of Arizona). I haven't scouted much yet, but have seen a few areas with deer trails when scouting for my February javelina hunt. I scouted bits of unit 33, but I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on better units surrounding Tucson to hunt. If so, any even very slight clues on where to hunt in the unit would be greatly appreciated. I know that the hunts require a great deal of hiking and glassing and feel that I'm prepared for all of it except for the location. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
