    Decoy???

"I'd watch out being in close proximity to a decoy during any kind of firearms hunt. Some moron is likely to start shooting at it." or a moron with archery equipment. I've seen just as many poor choices made by archers! As for your question about decoys Flatlander. I've had the privilege of having and helping out on the 6 different AZ hunts. I/We have had mixed results. Had great success using a decoy by slipping into an area they were using heavily and setting it up before first light and then sitting a short way away under a juniper. This has worked more than once for us. Also had them see the decoy from what seems like a ridiculous distance and run hard the other way. The type of decoy itself hasn't seemed to matter much. Have seen basically the same results with different ones. They are certainly curious but also somewhat unpredictable. That's what mades them so much fun to hunt.

    Question 2A

have had this tag twice. first time was a blast no real access problems. second time was 3 years ago. after contacting the unit manager he told me about some access very near st johns and about all the closures and access issues. i'd hunted in there the first hunt and scouted it before the second. no tire tracks no sign of traffic at all, then hunt comes up and over 70 percent of the tag holders were all camped in about a two square mile area. instead of working with landowners to help us gain access i guess he figured he'd just help us all out by putting us on top of each other. anyway i accessed a huge amount of this unit on foot using maps and crossing fences from the highway where the land owners haven't followed all the rules for a legal posting. they just lock up the roads leading in. plenty of animals to choose from but little in the way of huge size. saw lots of mid to low 70 inch goats but only one larger and he got killed opening day. i was a little to late to the spot. i've always seen and enjoyed hunted between milky wash and the petrified forests' eastern boundry. not a huge area but seems like it always has a number of decent bucks. if you haven't seen anybody do it take a house entrance matte or piece of carpet to put on top strand makes crossing fences all day a heck of a lot nicer.

    mule deer in southern az

To answer your question about archers wounding animals. Far to many hunters, weapon not withstanding, wound far more animals than they ever should. That being said, anyone that thinks it will never happen to them isn't realistic. That doesn't mean it's excusable either. One trip to a range, rifle or archery, to observe what people believe is acceptable regarding accuracy under the best of circumstances will disgust anyone who understands the meaning of taking an animal cleanly. For that matter, just read the numerous archery elk posts regarding wounded animals! As a side note, all the help I've read about people giving to others after a mistake has been made is admirable and should be commended. Our hunting community is eroding and is becoming dominated by selfish attitudes, selfish/rude behaviors, and general lack of respect for the animals we take and the others in our fraternity. Of course it's easy to point fingers and place blame. I for one am very tired of all the justifications that are made in the name of doing whatever a person wants as long as it's legal. When this attitude dominates hunters it's not hard to extrapolate it to include those who are meant to manage. I'm not meaning to denigrate the boots on the ground in the G&F but more to include the departments role in the decline of our hunting heritage. To make it clear I hate rules more than most!!! The last thing I want is more of them but somethings gotta change. I guess at this point I've hijacked this thread, I won't continue my rant any further, at least not in this thread.

    mule deer in southern az

It's combination of all the things you listed and huge issues relate to undocumented immigration/drug trafficking. By the way keep it up border patrol. The job these men and women do is grossly underappreciated by far to many in this country! I'm also including human beings in the predation component of your query. In my opinion however, all of these factos pale in comparison to the way the department has handled the archery hunting for years. Allowing an unrestricted number of hunters loose in a huge area (basically pick a unit and ever body pile in,) has been a major factor in the mule deer decline. Anyone that goes into these units during the late hunts can see the amount of pressure put on them during those times. There are hunters under every bush in mule deer habitat every weekend an heavy numbers of people during the regular week. The department needs to change the system by which archery tags are issued. They need to restrict the number of tags issued to the individual units and make the tags species specific. I also believe that the department should require unsuccessful hunters turn in unused rifle or archery tags prior to the purchase of a second tag to combat the unscrupulous few who double take. The mandatory reporting currently in place is a hugely flawed system. I know what I just had to just wrote will be hugely unpopular so I'll make sure to point out that there are to many rifle tags issued in these units also. I'm out there during the december and january archery hunts when i feel like it but I'm usually way more interested in waterfowl. For all of those who are instantly going to jump on me for my opinion and are going to be completely dismissive of the points made. Pick a weapon and a unit and go out and enjoy chasing your quarry.

    165gr sst hornady

Have had extremely good luck with h4831. Have used in a few rifles chambered in 3oowm. Very accurate and consistent velocities. Loads for accuracy in the rifles have been pretty consistent at 75.5 gr. with velocities over 3100 fps. But these have also been at the upper end of what we usually consider safe. Starting to show signs of pressure.

    brass and major speed issues

Based on the difference in weight I would suspect it was a decrease in overall case volume. Of course this assumes the only change was the brass and you are using the same lot of primers, powder and projectiles. Pat

Looking for an original wood replacement for the factory synthetic stock. Almost any condition ok. Would prefer unmodified barrel channel and bedding area. Going to modify the shape and finish, so scratches and even small gouges are just fine. Also don't care about the checkering, recoil pad or butt plate. Can text or call (520)465/5015

    Restored a little faith

Sure i'll comment. There was only one other hunter! Never laid eyes on or met him. Met the one guide I mentioned. As for roads, the area we concentrated on only has two and other than using them every day, I never experienced anything. I'm always curious as to what's being said, so let's hear it.

    Restored a little faith

When I found out my Father had gotten drawn in 37a I couldn't have been happier for him. Something like 36 years of trying. After some of the experiences I've had with other hunters and outfitters over the last few years i quickly became more worried than happy for him. We've both dealt with more b.s. from people in the field than I'd care to mention. Unfortunately this led me to be less than optimistic about his chances of having everything go smoothly. Even though there is only one other hunter in the unit, my imagination ran pretty wild with the what ifs. I don't really know much about the other hunter but i can speak to the guys guiding him. It's not a big unit and the area the sheep tend to consistently use is even smaller. It would have been very easy to end up all over each other. I only managed to get the last name of one of the guides, Mattauch, but a very stand up guy for sure. I believe the outfit he was working for was double h outfitters? If so, i want to thank you guys for giving my Dad the space around ragged top. What you didn't know and probably couldn't have seen, is that my Dad is disabled and too proud to use his condition as a crutch. Having the area basically to himself is one of the major reasons he was physically able to harvest his ram. I think its also important to note that my dad also got help from numerous individuals that didn't have to do what they did for them. I'd name some names but I'm sure how they would feel about it. DIY takes on a whole new meaning with the experienced guidance my dad was able to obtain. Tons of watching, both before and during the hunt, tons of waiting, one stalk, one shot and a heck of a lot of work = priceless! As for the score, cause i know it's gonna get asked, don't know for sure. My Dads goal was a class 4 ram and we know he's that without a doubt. I'm curious to hear some guesses anyway. I'll update after we have him scored. If anybody here actually knows the other hunter or the guys he has working with him, can you please extend our gratitude. It is way to difficult to put into words what their respect of our location meant to us!
