    It has been bugging me…

What we do when we think nobody is looking! That's what keeps running through my head. I'm not new to hunting nor am i new to ideas being tossed around. Seems like my Father and I spend more than 50% of the time we spend talking about hunting, shooting and the outdoors on these topics. Nobody is perfect! I've lost 2 big game animals to my failures as a sportsman and had another very close call with another. A few things I've learned the hard way, Elk are way tougher, antelope are way faster than i ever could have imagined and i don't always possess the patience i need to. As for shooting at past 400 yrds, I've done it successfully and will probably do it again but not until i get back to regular practice as i was embarrassed by my performance during this years hunt at a range that almost everyone I've ever talked to would claim as easy. For me the bottom line comes down to respect. Respect for others in the field and for the animals we pursue. Unfortunately my experiences have taught me there are far to many people in the field that don't possess either.

    Field Judging Coues

big deer look big. if you have to look, think and study he's not a monster. every really big one i've seen has never even left me with a question. that being said, every 85 to 90" deer and even some at a 100" have always made question.

    Here is # 2

animal is quartered just slightly away, leg position on off shoulder is right down the middle of the cross hairs. if any thing, i might be a little far forward but i'll take breaking bone anytime. wind was right to left?

    Here is # 2

rem 700 3x9 ziess diavari .300wm 165gr hornady interlock sp average muzzle velocity of 3,280 fps. 8" drop from zero at 400. Get rest, chamber round, breathe, squeeze, take a moment to reflect on the collection my trophy and patience that allowed for his collection. Unlike last time because of the lack of wind and the amount of practice i have at this distance, i'd take the shot.
  7. justanotherpunk

How will you make this shot?

Big Big difference between could and should. To far in that kind of wind for most anybody to make a clean and sure kill. I'd rather be patient than risk loosing a questionable opportunity than wounding and not killing clean, one of natures more majestic creatures. But as I've read on here to many times someone will most assuredly claim they could and should take the shot.

    7MM RUM

keep working loads. H4831sc and hornady 139 GR SP's. i know this bullet won't be at the top of everyones list but they shoot well in all of my rifles and perform in the field excellent. Haven't yet had a "over-bore" Remington that wouldn't shoot sub 1" moa. I wouldn't worry about the rifle itself. There are other factors that can help increase accuracy nobody has mentioned. Trigger, floating the barrel (although I 'm not sure this factory stock doesn't have an aluminum bed and isn't already floated), etc.

    Rem. 700 ADL in .308

Posting for a friend that was excited enough last year to start hunting and already has decided He has other more important priorities. Anyway, Remington 700 ADL in .308. Has had factory trigger polished and adjusted to approx. 3# with no creep. Asking $500.

    25-06 improved

Anybody here had any experience with this cartridge? Going to send a Rem. 700 in 25-06 to be rebarrelled and thought this might be a fun change while I was reworking it. Have had great success with the other ackely improved cartridges. .257, .243, 30-40 Kraig but I haven't been able to find anybody that has first hand knowledge of the 25-06.

    25-06 improved

.270? What's that? Oh yeah it's that cartridge been around since the early '20's, BORING, plus I already got one of those. Casey, The barrel has severe throat erosion from years of service flinging 75 GN. Hornadys more than 3,600 fps. at countless coyotes, jacks, and p-dogs. Otherwise I wouldn't touch this killer. It's that one rifle in the collection that everyone has used to take animals. It's more like an old trusted companion that deserves a new lease on life. Thanks for the link Schmitty. Already sent the action to be trued and an 26" rem. magnum contour barrel in 25-06AI installed. Guess I just want to be different.

    30-40 Ackley Improved

It really is a neat rifle and I would keep it if I wasn't in the process of building a couple of other rigs right now and didn't already have a 300 win mag, 300 H&H, 30-06, 300 Ultra Mag.
  20. justanotherpunk

    30-40 Ackley Improved

30-40 Ackley Improved, 40 degree, parent case is 30-40 Kraig. Mauser action, timney trigger, douglas barrel, custom stock, glass bedded and free-floated, removable floorplate. Rifle is a shooter (1/2 to 3/4 inch groups at a hundred yards, depends on who is shooting, me or my dad). Comes with BCBS dies made to fit from fireformed cases. Also includes new Winchester cases (these haven't been fireformed yet,) redfield base and 1" rings. Chronographed at 3000fps with IMR4350 and 165 grain Hornady bullets. Would like to keep it but I have ended up with to many .30 caliber rifles, all of which shoot well. This one drew the short straw. Only asking $400.00

    Draw Bow Tags?

Seems the general consensus further regulating archery hunting is horrible. Just because the success rates for archery hunts are less than that of rifles hunts doesn't mean that there aren't negative effects related to the current structure for acquiring archery tags and with the current structure for how they can be used (remember, just because they aren't being killed doesn't mean they aren't being disturbed.) Right now it's sort of like a free for all, buy a tag and go just about anywhere (much of the time during the rut). Although that last couple of comments probably won't be very popular, anyone that spends time in the field knows how much pressure can be generated in the late hunts from archery hunting (every road truck on it and every waterhole seems to a hunter at it, just try and puddle jump ducks from late Dec. to the end of Jan. without getting told off for wrecking someones day.) I put in my time every year with both rifle and archery and have been hoping the Game and Fish would wake up and do something about the current structure for archery hunts especially considering one of the reasons that was given by G&F for drastically cutting the number of Dec. rifle permits, many years ago, was the negative effects hunting pressure had on the fawn crop. I also know I'm a hypocrite for taking advantage of something I don't really care for but when in Rome... These changes may not be such a bad thing for hunting, especially when quality is concerned, in Arizona. I also think maybe it should be expanded to cover the southern units as well. As far as blowing the processing fee for nothing. Maybe you should consider the processing fee the privilege of supporting wildlife projects in Arizona without having to suffer through many of the negatives (substandard wages, illegal immigration, etc.) of living here. Just my two cents.

    TUCSON BUTCHER RUINS DEER MEET

Had a similar experience with this same shop. Family emergency dictated that I wouldn't have time to butcher two deer shot by family members myself. Took the deer in skinned and cleaned. When we dropped them off it would have taken a pack of animals to make a mess of things the way they did.
  23. Took a couple of friends hunting this weekend. Had a great time camping, hunting and B.S.ing. Nice break from work. Saw a number of bucks and they even got to shoot a more than one of them. I've finally come to terms with all the stuff I see people do that doesn't sit well with me. Much less frustrating and much more fun. Some of it can even be pretty darn hilarious. People never cease to entertain. There is one thing however, I will never get over. Why do people think it is exceptable to point a firearm at someone to see what they are. I swear it is getting harder and harder to hold back. Makes me want to shoot somebody when it happens. How many of you had this happen at least once this year? How do you respond once it happens?

    25-06 purchase

I have been shooting this cartridge for a little over 20 years and the rifle has been used by at least a dozen friends of the family killing more of these little whitetail than I can count using 46GR of H4831 and Hornady 110GR SP's. My rifle always seems to respond better at higher pressures and 46GR seemed to be all that it would accomodate safely. Great gun in an even better cartridge.

    Turrets for Zeiss

I'm looking to get an elevation turret for a Zeiss Diavari 3x9. The scope tracks well enough to use it like it is but the thought of removing the cap and making adustments in the field just bothers me. Any help would be appreciated.
