    Finally got out

I started a new job a few months back and it has been eating up all the time I have but I finally got a few days off so I decided to hit an area I found a nice shed in during the rifle hunt. Nothing to impressive to share but I sure was having some good luck for a few minutes. First one of the day, you have to start somewhere. Next, about an hour later, I ran into this ancient piece while hiking up a side drainage, what you see is about all there was left. Then the luck started. just up the hill from the head, about 200 yards I ran into another shed. took some ALT pics and I took a look around then saw another antler laying about 20 yards away. The other side? ended up not beeing the other side but I think it might have been the same buck just different years. Heres the ALT pic. Tell me what you all see. you may have to look hard! All in all it was a good day. 5 hours of hiking, four sheds and one head. can't say that I have ever found that much in just one outing.
  2. http://azstarnet.com/news/local/article_c1...1cc4c002e0.html They don't kill every bear that wonders into town. I'm sure there was other issues that lead to the decision to put the bear down.
  3. I don't know were this happened but the Their ranch is on the SE corner of the mountians. Their ranch HQ was at the mouth of rucker canyon right on the 29 30A units boarder. They have a bunch of land out there and I'm sure they lease some public land to but I suspect that it was somewhere in that general area.
  4. I had a chance to meet the two Krentz Brothers this last summer while i was working down near their ranch. Great guys and it made me sick to hear this news. We talked for a little while and the topic of how dangerous it is down there came up so to hear this news was a little chilling. Prays sent for the family.
  5. Great info Jim, my question would be how the hunt survey data is used so I'm looking foward to reading your next segment.

    Have you noticed?

Your right they have change what they are calling it and I must say that I like the new "name". Its obvious to me that the climate is changing but I agree with you that "change" is part of the earths normal cycle. what most of the scientist are saying though is that the change that is occurring now is VERY rapid which is a little scary. It’s hard to believe that we as a human race don't have any impact on what would normally go on with earths cycles but what organisms don't influence the environment in which they live. If I may be so personal I believe that God gave us this earth to live on and it is ours to use but we must also be good stewards. I must also say that I am getting tired of hearing about all the doomsday prophecies if we don't clean up our act. Just my $.2

Game&Fish - Operation Photo date check

I never thought that I would be saying this, but I finally agree with lark on this one, he nailed it. A few years ago, I started a web page for Desert Christian Archers. (http://desertchristianarchers.com/) On the website, I put a whole bunch of hunting success pictures, along with hunter names. Despite being "so underfunded", someone at G&F had the time to verify that all the hunters in the pictures had tags. A few of the archery deer pictures were taken before the mandatory reporting started. G&F had the time to go out and knock on everyone of those guys doors, and hassle them about not reporting the kill. G&F ended up not being able to prove anything, but those guys were really hassled. BTW, a DPS friend told me that G&F cops are the most powerful cops in the state. They can write you up for anything, including a traffic ticket in downtown Phoenix. So when you let one in your house, don't think that he is just looking at your animals. If you let one in, anything is fair game. Mark ANY police officer in this state can write a ticket for ANYTHING in vilocation to the laws ANYWHERE in this state. Officers just don't like stepping on toes by jumping juristitions.

    new fish and game Gods

Most of the money is being held by the state and not given to the G&F. The were going to hire about 8 I believe but they only got enough money to hire 4 for the entire state and those posistions are "Lets just see how it goes" and may be lost. I hope that doesn't happen and they get more.
  10. The hunters that are on this site are not you average hunters and consist of a very small % of the hunting population. Theres still plenty of small bucks being taken. On the flip side disscusion forum make SOME hunters make bad/illegal desisions just to shoot and post (brag) about their deer. Not saying anyone on this site is that way, that guy from cali. buying racks off the internet and claiming he shot them is one example.

Good job Tyson, you sure earned it for the amount of time you spend out in the field.

    What did Santa bring you?

It was a combined graduation gift but an Eberlestock J34. Sure enjoying it so far.
  13. Great pics Scotty! I've also taken a few resent trips and found some good number of birds.
  14. I'm working on a project looking at predators and their impacts on ecosystem and I was curious what you all think. I want this to remain a light discussion I just want to know what you all think. What would it entail for a control program to be successful? What is the most limiting factor for deer if not predators?
  15. Just thought I would share this with the rest of you in case you all ever run across it. I've never seen it till two weeks ago. I asked a friend about it, who also as see it in gambels, who past it on the the G&F vet who said it was likely a parasite, Toxiplasmosis. It will pose no threat to humans if the meat is cooked well. Dogs and cats can get it, especialy our 'retrievers' who like to snake on downed birds.
  16. Didn’t think I was going to be able to make it out today with being right in the middle of finals at the UofA but I got my priorities straight and decided to head down south. My dad and I found this spot last year when the bird #s were high and I have wanted to get back out there to see what this year would bring. This area is mearns hunter’s paradise, gentle rolling hills and relatively open as well, and lots of birds of course. Right out of the truck my shorthair, running like he’s running for his life, comes to a screeching halt and lots up on point, ONE bird gets up and I hit it but was a little nervous because I was thinking maybe someone else had been in there and had shot up all the birds. But I was presently suppressed. My shorthair, Dewey, locks up hard on two other 8+ bird coveys in about 15min time. About 8-9 coveys later in 3 hours my dad and I had our limits. One of my best days quail hunting ever. Plenty of birds and GREAT dog work. Dewey came alive this trip and my other pup, Ginger, also did well. This trip was the first time I have seen them honor each other’s points and they did plenty of that. I've limited out in a shorter time but the dog work made the day. AWESOME day mearns hunting regardless of being a slow year. Also found a desent coues set to boot. On a side note and give you all a lot more understanding on what I have had to deal with dewey. I was out hunting last weekend and left him in the kennel in the truck, came back a couple hour later and this is what I found. it had a cover on it at the time which he was also able to sqeez through. Found him just down the road hunting with other member of our party. I think he stayed by the truck until he herd the other guys shooting. Sometimes that dog is a handfull and I and to kill him but today he earned his keep and I think i'll keep him around a little longer.

    The Rut

I was in 34A this morning and saw three muley bucks. The largest buck, a decent 4x4 was chasing does and running off a tall 2x2. The other buck was all by himself. I saw a couple of whitetail does but no bucks.

    Elk sets and lighting

Some neat stuff you have done with your antlers. I've been wanting to mess with some of the ones I have, maybe make a small table lamp or something, just need to make the time I guess.

I propose a new scoring system!

The use of Radios to me is just a question of hunting morals/ethics and I do believe that the record books treat them the right way. Heres a question thought. Say if I had a number of spotters in my unit/state helping me locate animals, they call on radio or phone (also an eltric device) saying they found my animal and I have to drive to get to that location. Is that pursuing game with a vehical, which is breacking the law? It would be difficult, maybe imposible to prosicute, but Get on a wardens bad side and he may think so. Some of these guys do bother me in that they are just in it for the braging rights, but it is great that they raise all this money. Theres nothing wrong with trying to get a big animal but way are you realy trying? I eat my rifle tag this year just because I was trying to beat my personal best and for a new experince. But for me these guys that sit at a desk waiting for the phone call "I found your deer" then get a pigy back ride to the animal, they aren't hunters in my mind. But then there are guys that hunt with guide who hunt their buts off that I comend. Like most things in life however, your a whole lot more successful when you work as a team. But to each his own and I wouldn't vote against the govener tags. My$.2 for what it worth.

    javelina calls

I've used the bear squler by quaker boy and its worked great for me. I found that calling wokrs the best after you have gotten in on them and they get all busted up.

    Found a BEAST

I've come across a fair share of heads but this is by far the best. Of all the ones I've found this one I'm most certian he was killed by a lion. Teath marks on the skull and lion tracks around the remains. Super fresh to.

    anybody know these guys?

I agree. If I remember corectly don't some of the western states wildlife agencies also revoke hunting rights if they were lost in other states. Is AZ a part of that, anyone know?
