  1. Does anyone on here have experience with the 12B sheep hunt or know somebody that does?

Been looking at this for my application and would like to know if there is anything I need to know about access or anything like that. Maybe even quality of animals to expect. Not that I am thinking I have a chance at a tag it would just be nice to know.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Big beautiful bull, congrats on getting one of Arizona's most awesome trophies. I would think that all of the fresh snow would have been a big help finding and following tracks. The couple of times that I hunted them it was dry and noisy tracking and would usually loose the track before I would see the bull. About 90 degrees the day I shot mine made a miserable pack out. What a difference each hunt can be.

It would have been much easier had they been in an area we could have hunted them. The snow kept the animals on the Park and the few that did come across didn't come across very far before heading back over to safer areas for them

The hunt ended yesterday and unfortunately only 15 of the 30 tags were filled. There were guys who hunted 30+ and 40+ days each on this hunt and didn't lay eyes on a buffalo.

  3. What did you use to store the meat after field processing? How long did it take to quarter up/cape and how many guys helped out? Are you getting any shoulder mount or rug done?

Well it was snowing the entire time so I just kept the meat covered in tarps in the back of my Ranger as it was plenty cool up there until I could get it off the plateau the next day. It took a crew of us about 4 hours to get it processed and hiked out to the truck. Each quarter was between 80 and 90 pounds a piece. I was really surprised that the front and hind quarters were very similar in weight. I'm going to be getting a euro mount done with the skull and a replica of the horns made so those can be placed on the shoulder mount. The remaining hide will be given to a friend of mine who will be using it for some of her native ceremonies and celebrations.

  4. Haven't gotten to taste it yet. Casey's in Flag is doing the processing and I should be getting it back in a couple of weeks. Going to be getting a second freezer before then.

That's awesome congrats I have a buddy that's got that tag also I think he's up there right now great trophy

Who's your buddy up there? Interesting thing about his hunt is that most hunters pretty much work together and everyone gets to know each other through the hunt.

  5. Thanks everyone!

Congratulations, you did great! It looks like you got your money's worth on this tag. Twenty days of hunting and a nice bull. You got 19 more days of hunting than I did two years ago. I think I'm a little jealous!

There is a young man that will exceed 40 days on this hunt if he has to go through the end this Sunday. The weather and the animals have not been cooperating like they should this past Spring. One more was taken yesterday with a possible second one as well. Should get real good for those guys still hunting this week with the weather finally warming up.

  6. I used a rifle for the hunt. And I camped with your friend....his bow isn't coming out of the truck anymore at this point. :)

Bow or rifle? I have a buddy that is on his 5th trip up there and he has been able to get under 100 yards but he won't shoot that far with a bow on a buff. Idk if he is using the bow or rifle now. And congrats, how he well and cool getting him in the snow. I think every Saturday for the past 7 weeks it has snowed, so it been a tough hunt for everyone

  7. First of all.....this was the hardest hunt I've ever had. With the extremely wet Spring that we have had on the Plateau the past couple of months the animals have not been moving off the park like I have heard they had in previous years. It was mentally frustrating, time consuming, expensive, challenging, and all worth it in the end!

Thank you for all of my friends who were able to make the trip up north with me this past couple months and those who provided information and knowledge about this hunt. And good luck to the rest of the guys who are still up there giving it heck. When I left on Sunday there have only been a confirmed 7 Buffalo taken with rumor of an 8th out of the 30 tags this year, and only more week left in the season. In total I spent 21 days on the plateau and was able to take this Bull on day number 20. There are guys up there still that have spent even more days then that this season and still have yet to lay eyes on an animal. Now that I'm gone the weather should be much better and hopefully some more animals start showing up the last week. Apparently I was a curse as every weekend since April 24 as I would start driving up the weather would turn nasty and wet and the day that I left it would start to warm up. I've seen more snow this past 6 weeks then I cared to.

We guessed him as a 10 year old bull. Big head and beard on this guy....I couldn't be more happy with the outcome!!!

  8. Good luck to you guys up there. And If you can, discourage those same turkey hunters from road hunting up by the park border. I was all over that area and saw very little turkey sign, plus the more people driving those roads the better chance we have of those animals moving back over on to the park side.

  9.

    Roads are good

Basser do you know how the hunters did up there the opener on turkeys. That's a beautiful goulds btw, seem them running around on fort Huachuca all the time and that one you killed Puts them to shame.

Thank you! I don't think the hunters did very good for turkey last weekend. It was just enough snow to muddy things up and make it tough. Talked to several turkey hunters and none of them were hearing or seeing much. I covered a lot of ground and was out early and late and didn't hear a single gobble all weekend. I think you guys will hit it just right this weekend.

  10. Didn't post pics of these animals yet and figured it is nice to see some photos during the offseason as well.

Here is my 2014 early November buck from one of the southern units. Cool buck with some sweet character that ended up getting him right at the 100" mark. 350 yard shot as he stood up out of his bed. Couldn't have gotten him without the help of Ron and Tyler.

Then in early January I was able to make it back down to Mexico with some good friends for our annual trip. Man I love Mexico! On top of a great time we were able to take home some awesome animals. Here is my biggest buck to date. We taped him in camp at 113" and then recently I had another friend put him at 116". Either way, he is a stud and I couldn't be more happy with him.

Thank you to my buddy Hunter and his Dad Pat for their help. And for the record....when you buy a new range finder make sure that you check it is ranging in yards and not meters. Unfortunately this experience turned in to more of a rodeo than it should have.

Here is a pic of the buck Hunter was able to take. A really cool and wide buck with starts of a double dropper. Each cheater was about an inch long.

And for kicks, here are some photos of a bear we glassed up and watched for a while. First time seeing an Oso in Mexico.

  11. Been a while since I've shared a success story. This Spring I was double fortunate to draw a Goulds and a Buffalo tag. After spending the early part of the year trying to find some Buffs off the park I shifted gears to my Goulds tag for a few weeks. A couple scouting trips led to some awesome country and a good amount of birds.

I made the trip down there late after work on Thursday and got set up in the canyon I had wanted to be. Found 5 birds gobbling on the roost and countless hens yelping all around. I wish I could say that I called them in straight off the roost but that didn't happen. Once they flew down (super early I might add) they went in to the field in the opposite direction. Once I realized that they were headed the other way I was able to find where they were going and was able to set up in front of them as they were feeding. Not the textbook call in but sometimes you have to hunt and adapt.

He has a 10+ inch beard and a 1 inch and 1.5 inch spurs

Since I was done by 6:15 opening morning I then packed up and headed north to the Kaibab to spend the rest of the weekend looking for some animals just a little bit bigger. Unfortunately the weather and the animals didn't cooperate as well as the turkey.

Will be headed back up for Buffalo as soon as I can get past this "work" thing this week...

  12. Man....one would think you guys could use this as a "learning experience" for these kids instead of a bash fest and boast about how perfect you were as a teenager.

These kids messed up and could use a little guidance. I'm sure most, actually all of us, have made mistakes that we could learn from. I'd suggest you guys relax a bit and may reach out a hand instead of crucify some kids who are the future of out sport and past time. Let's make sure they can learn to be good examples and carry it forward the right way.

I can't remember the names of the kids who made the post but if you guys have any questions or would like to head out sometime with me and my 17 year old brothers to do some fishing, hiking, hunting, or whatever just send me a PM. I live up on the North Phoenix area.
