  1. My 12 yr old son wants to get into archery, and I want to get him a bow for Christmas. He is right handed and left eye dominant. He shoots a rifle right handed, but I don't know if a bow would be the same. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this? I was thinking about just taking him to get fit for one and he can decide what more comfortable, or should we just get him one and he can train himself either way?

    Thanks

I love that you hiked, showing them how to hunt the right way.  To many people out there driving around in quads and utv's saying they're hunting.  Well dona.

It was not easy with a 6 year old that gets bored after 2 mins, but even with him not being that quiet we were on them all day. Even when we hung back a little a couple times a bull and a couple cow came into us at about 20 yards (my hunter were not with us of course) and they were not bothered by us in the least. He thought that was so cool.

  3. I am so proud of my boys, even my 6 year old. They really put in the work to have an amazing hunt. Their tag was in 5bs/6A we signed up for the youth camp that the Elk Society was putting on there. They really do a great job with all of the youth camps. They teach the kids so much and everyone there is always so happy for the kids and willing to help. We also stayed in one of the bunk houses that they have there and the kids thought that was really cool.

We got into them right away my oldest got his down around 10am and my middle son got his around 5:30pm. We hiked altogether about 12 miles. It was a long day but well worth it. They were really rutting hard, a few times we were on a herd the bulls were surrounding the cows so I was nervous for them to shoot, but it all worked out. It was really fun experience it as a family.

We live in queen creek and luckily Miller's Southwestern Processing was there. They are nice and very efficient.

(It wouldn't let me upload all of the family pictures for some reason)

  4. Thought you guys would appreciate this picture that I found of my grandpa. It was taken 60+ years ago. I am the same age now that he was in this picture. He passed when I was 13, but wish my boys and I could have hunted with him.

Yep...early scouting is best to just locate water sources and learn the lay of the land, access roads, etc. the bulls won’t be in the same areas during your hunt. I don’t know if 6b is open for archery deer, but that can be a good dual-purpose scouting trip too just a couple weeks before your hunt.

That's the plan to deer hunt the week(s) before. At least least year that's when 6B was open for archery deer...who knows this year. Thank you for the help. 🙂

  6. I was lucky enough to draw my first bull tag and it's an early archery tag in 6B. I am so excited! I bought my bow about 2 years ago and fell for archery pretty quick 😊. My family and I are headed there this weekend to shed hunt and scout. My dad hunts muzzleloader deer in 6B most years so he knows the northern part of the unit pretty well but does not have experience with the elk rut. My question is what kinds of things do you look for when you are scouting for early archery? I want to do whatever I can to have a great hunt and hopefully a successful one. Thank you!!

  7. I was also wondering the same thing. My husband was one of the 15 lucky ones to draw a 6B mule tag that starts this Friday. This will be our first time hunting the "rut". I am so excited. I just hope its not too muddy from all the snow.

  8. We had such a great time on my son's first big game hunt. The youth camp was AMAZING. Everyone was so nice. They were so willing to donate their time to help all the youth have a successful hunt and the food was delicious.

My dad was able to go with us on this hunt but he is used to hunting near Flagstaff in the pines so this was very different for him.

Opening day we went out by ourselves just to see what we could do. We got a few pointers from the people at camp on where to start. My dad was not used to glassing he is used to hiking with little glassing. In 22 it was all about glassing and little hiking. We saw a couple white tail doe but nothing else. Day 2 we decided to have a mentor go with us. (He was amazing!) We were able to get on a couple bucks in the morning but they were already being stocked by two other hunters but we waited to see if they would come our way. The two othere hunters missed 6-7 times before the deer even ran the opposite way. Others are missing left and right. My son was getting discouraged because he couldn't even get a shot. I gave him a pep talk and he was ready again.

Sunday was the last day we had our mentor. Same thing happened we glasses a buck and by the time we were ready to stock someone was already shooting at him and missed. We went back to camp dropped our mentor off ( he had to get back home) and grabbed a quick bite. We went back out by this time it was HOT we knew they would not be moving around so our best bet was to hike and jump one. We walked a couple miles up and down ridges and were heading back to the truck when a velvet spike jumped out of nowhere. We got my son set up on his shooting sticks by this time the buck was on the other side a ridge and moving fast my dad whistled and it stopped and looked. My son said "I have a shot" we told him to take it. 300 yards away, 1 shot dropped him where he stood. I was so proud of him.

I am grateful my dad was able to be there and to pack that deer out a mile back to the truck 😜. I am grateful to our mentor and wish he could have been there to see it and i thankful for everone at camp that helped with whatever they needed. Now we are in Flagstaff helping my other son fill his cow tag.

First time here. Hope I'm doing this right 🤨. My son was drawn for a unit 22 any antlered youth deer tag. We are really excited but we are unfamiliar with this unit (we did sign up for the youth camp for 22/23 by Punkin). We went scouting today in that area and didn't see anything. I am not looking for anyone "honey hole" just want an idea on where to start. This is his first big game hunt at 10 yrs old and I want to make it memorable for him. Thanks in advance.
