My suggestion would be to join-up and volunteer to help at the 20C Junior Javelina camp that is held every year! I think that hunt is the last weekend in January. Look at the AZ G&F website for details, as I think it will be listed there. Or do a Google search of "Youth Outdoors Unlimited". They are sponsoring and have a facebook page. There is a good group of folks who sponsor the annual youth javelina hunt there. If you go up there and volunteer to help-out around camp, or glassing for kids, or what ever, I know you'll get some valuable knowledge and/or tips that will help you on your hunt! Good luck! S.

Well, I don't live in Tucson so I don't read the Daily Star. Didn't realize the reporter had such a reputation..... Also likely due to my own ignorance, I don't completely understand the negative comments towards the G&F on this. Seems like Donnie did the right thing by reporting the event. Then it seems like the G&F investigated and gathered as much info as they could on it. Looks like that's the end of the story. I didn't see any kind of 'guilty until proven innocent' on this thing. Oh well, either way it's pretty cool to think that there is still the occasional Jaguar running around. S.

I would have NEVER called the G&F in the first place. You never know when they might try and cite you for harassing an endangered species. I've seen plenty of stories in newspapers where they add a little post-script to the article that sometimes calls out details of the subject and/or object of the interview. Seems to me like it was maybe the reporting giving Donnie a little PR...... On the weekends that we're not hunting together, my oldest is usually busy with a 'not so common' sport! He is on his high school's Crew team. For those that don't know what the sport of Crew is, it's ROWING! It's a great team sport, with coordination, teamwork, and LOTS of conditioning being mandatory for success! The weekend after our mule deer hunt found us out in Marina Del Rey for the annual Fall Regatta (that's what they call the rowing tournaments....). This was an open event, with teams from all over the country, not just high school teams. There were some high school teams, some college teams (ASU was there), and some 'club' teams. They have various races, from single sculling boats, all the way to 8 man (and/or woman) sweep races. Spent a nice day watching the races, then had some evening fun with a friend in Santa Monica while Erik and his team hung-out together. All in all, a great weekend. Erik competed in a four man boat. The boy has some serious guns and dug-in deep for the 5K race! They ended-up taking second place in a tough field of open competition. Proud of him! I don't have my kids this weekend (single dad....) and I had some free time, so I drove down to the 36A/B youth camp that SCI is hosting. I showed-up just before light and it didn't take long for a father/son to come into camp. I offered my help, and 30 minutes later we were out in the hills glassing for a buck together. Didn't end-up finding anything for the kid to shoot, but he and his father definitely appreciated me being there! (or maybe it was the Swaros they appreciated.... ) Either way, it was another fun morning of deer hunting with a kid! Thanks for your interest Mark! Many on this board have made a difference by volunteering to help kids, and it always leaves a great impression on them! S.

Great post Coach. I cant agree more. And for me butchering your kill is part of the fun. I really enjoy the entire process. And your 100%correct on taking off all the fat you can. That stuff will turn your meat gamey in a hurry. I usually add pork fat back to the hamburger to keep it together. Butchering our own game is one of those things I am so thankful my family has always done and something I was able to learn form my family. And for the guys that have not processed your own game yet you should really give it a shot. It may not be perfect the first few times you do it but who cares. You will learn and have the satisfaction of knowing you did the job yourself and did it the right way. +1 on this!! I'm no expert, but you don't have to be one.... The internet has plenty of 'how to' information, diagrams, etc. on how to butcher your own, and I LOVE doing it! My oldest son killed a little 3 point muley on a hunt a couple of weeks ago. We deboned the meat and kept it clean and cool. A couple of days later, a buddy and I enjoyed a few beers together while cutting, wrapping, and vacume sealing the meat. Suppose it depends on how you look at it, but to me the butchering/cutting/wrapping is all part of the experience. Kind of like the cherry on top of the hunt! S.
