Dave, it was nice to see you down there again. This thing has really gotten BIG in a short time, hasn't it? Kudos to those that showed-up to support this! It was great a time, for an excellent cause. Good job to Lance, Bobby Boido, and Gabe Paz for leading the charge! Truly, more folks aught to try to join-in next year though. C'mon down and camp-out for a night. What a great time it was to share a camp fire & meet new folks. You wouldn't have believed the great food in the camp as well. Nothing like getting a bunch of folks who like to cook & eat together!!! Elk chili, green chili?s roasted on the mesquite fire, huge rib-eye steaks, beans slow-cooked all day long, fresh peach AND berry cobbler done in the Dutch oven, fried potatoes, grilled pork chops, the list goes on & on.... Oh, and of course some awesome menudo on Sunday morning! Lance, my two little ones had a great time running around with Cole. You should have been there Saturday night. Gabe and his buddies had me laughing so hard, I about busted a gut! We'll see everyone next year! S.

Hello Fellow AZ Residents: Jim and Darla Soloman of Outdoors Arizona (www.outdoorsaz.com) are putting together an event next weekend (3/11-3/13) called the Ultimate Outdoor Experience. The event will be held at West World in Scottsdale. It is an interactive show that allows folks to try-out various types of hiking, biking, camping, hunting, and fishing equipment. In support of this event, the Junior Arizona Deer Association has been approached with a plea for help from Daisy Outdoor Products (you know, as in BB guns....), and I'm hoping to round-up some support! Daisy is sponsoring a 10 lane air rifle range set-up and they are in need of volunteers to help man the shooting lanes & supervise the little ones over the weekend. This event will provide the little ones the opportunity to have a great time trying-out the Daisy products. Keep in mind that this may be the ONLY chance that some of these youngsters will get to try out a BB/pellet gun! YOU could play a pivotal role in turning a youngster on to shooting sports!!! The hours for the Outdoors Show are from 10-6 on Fri & Sat, and from 10-4 on Sunday, and we will need at least 5-10 people there at all times (one supervisor for each two lanes...). Mature teens are also welcome to volunteer! If you can spare ANY time next weekend, please let me know as soon as possible! I need to get back and tell them if we have enough volunteers ASAP. Please PM me or e-mail me at stan.johnsen@aexp.com if you can help. I know that this is short notice, but please consider making some time to help me make this happen!!!! Any help is appreciated, and you DON'T need to be an ADA member!!! IT'S FOR THE KIDS!!! Thanks in advance! Goodmorning all.... I caught this on azcentral.com; http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0225roosevelt25.html Good times everyone. Enjoy it while it lasts... S.

Good point on the misc. help for the banquet & other activies Kevin! Muskrat, it sounds like you've already got the wheels in motion.... Thanks for jumping-in. Soon we'll be planning our youth activities for this summer and fall. I'll be sure to post the schedule of events, and if you could attend any of them and write-up a story for our newsletter, that would be great! We're going to plan some good stuff for the kids this year! ;-) S.
-
PS Muskrat.... I just noticed your job title on your signature. Freelance writer? How about you join us for one (or more...) of the projects or events, and then write a story-up for our publication? That would be a great way to get involved in the organization, and help-out where your skills would be truly appreciated. Either that, or just write-up an independent hunting article for our quarterly ADA publication (THE DEER TIMES). We can always use good material for the publication! Just a though.... S.

Allen: Thanks very much for bringing this up! It is SO critical that as many hunters as possible try to get involved in these types of organizations! The ranch clean-up this weekend is a great example. It should be a great event! Muskrat, your question almost made me laugh out loud!!! Can new members join the board? Are you kidding me, many organizations can't get enough people interested enough in even trying to get involved with the board! Here is a VERY sad case in point: As a 'non-active' member of the ADA, I recieved a letter last spring that announced when the annual OPEN board meeting would be held, and it's location. It was on a Saturday early last May, and I thought I would attend to see what was going on. Well, the meeting turned-out to be the ADA board (not even the entire board...), and ME. There were ZERO ADA members that took the time to go to the meeting, even though everyone one of them got a flyer inviting them to attend. That kind of apathy is pathetic, and inspired me to become more involved. Fast forward to today, and I am now the Youth Chairman for the ADA. As far as the time commitment involved, it all depends on how much a person wants to do. I attend an evening meeting once or twice per month, and am active in helping out with misc. stuff probably 6 weekends per year. That's just ME though. Everyone can choose their own level of participation. The point is PLEASE, everyone become involved. As with any volunteer opportunity, you will be paid back in good karma and by meeting great people. S. PS: PLEASE COME DOWN TO THE UNIT 36 RANCH CLEAN-UP NEXT WEEKEND IF YOU CAN! IT WILL GIVE YOU AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEE TRUE GRASS-ROOTS WORK IN ACTION!

AZ Hunters Who Care Trash Pickup Day
stanley replied to AZLance's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I'm hoping to roll-in by late afternoon on Friday, and staying for two nights. I figured that me and the boys might as well stick around for the entire weekend and enjoy some time in the desert. The little ones LOVE a good camping trip! We plan on doing a little scouting & shooting with the .22's after the trash duties die down as well.... Hopefully we can find some room to set-up the JADA trailer for the food. It sounds like there could be quite a crowd! S. -
Unbelievable Brian! Amazing how brazen folks are! I had my truck stolen (also a Toyota 4x4) from my driveway many years ago. What a sick feeling to come out in the morning to find your wheels gone. S.

AZ Hunters Who Care Trash Pickup Day
stanley replied to AZLance's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Bumping this thread to the top again! All who can show-up should definitely make it a point to do so! This is an awesome event to participate in! I know that many of you coues hunters are always looking for an excuse to get out into coues country!!! The Arizona Deer Association has joined SCI Tucson in helping to sponsor this thing, and we're going to make it quite a big show! We will be raffling-off 2 (yes two!!!) .22 rifles to youth's ONLY, and a .223 in a general raffle. No raffle tickets to purchase, just show-up and pick-up trash. The more trash you pick-up, the better your chances of winning a rifle! As the Youth Chairman for the Arizona Deer Association, I would encourage anyone who has kids to bring them on down for a family day! Maybe win a rifle, and meet some great people. We'll be camping-out all weekend long, and would welcome all to join us in camp for some fun!! S. -
I spent the weekend down south with my 10 year old son on his first big game hunt! We didn't get a pig, but we had a GREAT weekend. Awesome weather, great glassing, and lots of animals to be seen. He learned a lot over the weekend (I learned some as well.... ). We ended-up getting within range of some on the last day, but couldn't get one to hold still long enough for a shot. He was a little bummed at not killing one, but as he learned in Hunters Education last week; a successful hunt does NOT necessarily mean killing an animal. I was proud of him for taking this lesson seriously, and not letting it ruin his otherwise perfect weekend! No sense worrying about it anyway.... we have turkey season to plan for! S. PS: I hope lots of folks can make the trash clean-up day down there next month! Plan on bringing your kids, as the ADA has a special surprise planned for the little ones. Stay tuned....

Can you say JACKPOT????? Incredible! Congrats and welcome to the site. S.

Might want to place a metal detector at the door if he's planning on coming though. It would be funny to invite him though, just to see if he would dare show-up... S.

I'll jump-in with an answer Jim.... This year's banquet is on April 16th. Not sure about tickets, but hopefully Amanda can answer. You can also call the ADA phone number for ticket info - 602-395-DEER. S.

Great story & nice pic azhuntnut! Welcome to the site! S.

Boy, I wish I could help you. I know where they are, and have spent time there over the years, but I don't know the GPS coordinates. Let me know if you need or want any other tips in 37B though. I grew-up in Kearny, and still try to spend some time out there each fall..... Good luck!!!! S.

AZ Hunters Who Care Trash Pickup Day

For anyone who hasn't done this, you should SERIOUSLY consider showing-up! I took my two boys down last year, and we had a great time. What a great way to give back to the ranchers & help to keep the public land clean as well! I'll plan on being there for sure, and I'll try to get as many friends as possible to show up also! S. -
Connxion, congrats on the archery pig! Let me know how your scouting goes this weekend. I may be out there as well.... I'm in the same situation as you; my son has the 36 Jr. hunt as his first big game hunt as well. We've been doing some scouting, and I think I've got a pretty good spot or two. I'm really going to try hard to get him into some pigs!! I'll send you a PM soon and we can exchange scouting reports. Good luck! S.

Congrats on a fine buck Mike! S.

I was down in 36 this past weekend, and we had a great time. I was mainly scouting for my boy's Youth hunt in a couple of weeks, but two of my friends got out and chased a couple of coues with their bows. No deer killed, but they got into some action.... The kids had a great time! We didn't locate any javelina, but came across some sign. A spot or two looks promising for my son's hunt! S.

Good show Grande Bear!!! Glad you had an awesome hunt! S.

I agree with what Brian and many have said here. I don't have a problem with quads used properly. I really don't see them any differently than any other form of motorized transportation (again, as long as they're used properly...). It's sickening to be hiking off of a road and come across quad or motorcycle tracks, or any vehicle tracks for that matter! Last spring while on m first turkey hunt in 23, we actually witnessed a guy road hunting turkeys on one. He would drive a few hundred yards, then stop and start to hen call. He would then move on if he didn't hear a gobbler. Now being a novice I don't know much about turkey hunting, but it didn't take too much sense to tell me that he wasn't going to get a bird that way! To each there own, I guess... At least the road hunters help to keep the back-country a little less crowded.... S.
-
Hey Doug: Long time no talk. I hope all is well with you this new year! Doing any bird hunting? Yep, I remember your advice and I also have seen some with my own eyes back behind there. I'm not sure we'll go in there this weekend, I just found a nice camp spot in the general area so that's where we're going to set-up the pop-up. I think we're going to be focusing our actual hunting a little south of the Elkhorn though, based on some piggy sightings from last fall's deer hunt. As for the Youth Hunt in February, we (the ADA) are not going to be hosting an open camp for this year's 36 youth hunt. Just couldn't get it coordinated with the G&F, and help from the ADA is spread a little thin right now... I'll be down there with my boy hunting, but not to host a camp. There is a youth javelina hunt in 20C as well, and the ADA will be hosting a camp there this year (similar to years past...). If anyone's youngster has the 20C youth pig tag, be sure to look-out for a letter with details of the camp! I'll post this weekend's scouting results next week. S.

I'm headed down south of Marana this weekend with a couple of friends and my two boys to do a little pig & deer hunting (pigs & deer for me, deer only for my buddies...). I'm hoping to get into some pigs mainly so I can mark some prime locations for when I go back with my oldest for his Junior rifle hunt next month. We had our first night of Hunter Education last night, and it REALLY got me excited to get him out there for his first hunt next month! If anyone is going to be out, feel free to stop by our camp for some coffee & to say hello. We'll be camping in the Elkhorn area, likely in the foothill area a mile or so southeast of the ranch entrance. White GMC Yukon XL with a Coleman pop-up trailer. S.

Here's the post with some of Pat's work. As Kevin said, he also did a couple of mounts that are shown on azdeer.org. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=921 Thanks for sharing the pics coozfever.... S. -
