  1. This is my first hunt & will be hunting 3a/3c in nov/dec.  Was needing a good backpack & someone told me to get a good framed backpack.  Went to sportsmans warehouse & they had a large which had a built in water bladder for for over $200.  I thought it was a bit much since I already had one of those.

What do you all have for your hunt that works?  I was thinking of getting something for necessities such as first aid, food, ammo, etc..  someone said get whatever your comfortable with but what I think may be comfortable in the store isn't comfortable in reality.

This is the only unchecked item on my list.

Koury guide service hands down will not let you down.  Honestly man it comes down to your financial situation. If you can afford  a guide go with Koury.

I don't know anything about AZ guided hunts.

I can afford a 1st hunt with a guide. This guy isn't very responsive so guess he's busy now and only has FB & Instagram.  Looked on FB & no comments, left a vm but he did reply to my text msg saying he needs to check his schedule.  Nothing much after that other than he has guides with over 25 yrs experience.  Guess he's too busy.

I would think he would have had favorable FB comments, if anything.

If it’s your first hunt for bull elk hire a guide. I know the unit very well and there are lots of elk in that unit even on the late hunt. The bulls will typically be in the deepest nastiest stuff they can find considering all the hunts in the unit before yours.Weather will also play a major roll in your hunt.  Good luck, should be a fun hunt

Would that apply to unit 3A as well, you think?  I'm  virtually in the middle of 3A but was told 3C would be a better bet for bagging elk.

I went out to an area in 3A off 277 & did see many tracks but folks I'm talking to is moving me to the rim area.

I think a guide would be a good idea for your first hunt.  Just tell the guide you want to be guided but also ask to learn everything you can while on the hunt.

I found something online, Arizona Guided Hunts.  Anyone ever hear about them?  I spoke with the guy & said he has an expert with 3a & 3c and there's about a 70% chance of landing a bull elk - I was expecting better odds.  It's quite expensive but I figured it would be worth it, in the long run, if I plan on doing this in the future.

Don’t the bulls move into that unit during the rut. Not surprising you didn’t see much if that’s the case.

also, don’t the bulls leave that unit after the rut? Would it be worth it to spend money on a guide in that unit for the late hunt? Does a guy have a chance at a good bull or is it mostly rags then?

I don't know, this is my first bull elk hunt.  That's why I'm needing the help.  Weren't about 300 tags issued for the late hunt?

  6. This is my 1st hunt & it's the late bull elk end of November.  Been driving around, boots on the ground & havent seen much, yet, & was thinking of a hiring a guide for this one.  Anyone know of reputable guides they can recommend?  They're expensive but figured theres a better chance & learning experience on this 1st hunt.

I usually hunt small game it's not as difficult from the big game.

I live in 3C - late bull hunt is really tough. Last year bad weather was a HUGE factor in success rate. It can be very tough that time of year - lots of tags/hunters. Hoyle Canyon can hold some bulls but it’s a non motorized vehicle area. Area in and around Black Canyon Lake can hold some late bulls as well. Best of Luck!!

Thanks, this is helpful.  I was going to get a flat line map for 3a /3c to scout the areas.  Has anyone used the Huntdata maps before?  They're cheaper maps so not sure if they contain better/ or lack info flat line has.

Unit 3A's close to me but I haven't heard too much about hunting this area, I've seen mostly Pronghorn in this area.

    Art20,

Please don't take offense at people busting your balls here. That's what us hunters do, especially to a someone who uses a term out of context😂 We rag on each other and exaggerate about the size of the one that got away!

In all truthfulness, go put some miles on your boots and find elk right now. Get a friend to go with you even if they don't hunt to keep it fun. Get a good map with good topography lines and find elevation that let's you look into canyons. Find water on your maps.

Once you do this report back to us. Well ease up on you a bit at that point👍 Take care, Mark

    Thanks 👍🙂

Lance mentioned to get a flatline map for the unit.  Is this what you use?  I heard the ranger station have unit maps as well....I would guess they're not as detailed as flatline, I'll check into it.

Have you ever hunted 3a?  I live there but have seen nothing - it's something I'll explore more as well as 3c

My advice would be to stop digging, put the shovel down and keep Houston’s contact info.  When he says he knows less about the unit then some, that list is really really small.  Also I wouldn’t overlook 3a.  Find some high glassing points that are close to home and get out and sit on them.  You’ll eventually pick up bulls in those flats.  Wherever they are now isn’t far from where they’ll be come Black Friday.  If you’re finding sheds in there then even better.  3c is tight on then Rez and most of the big bulls that rut that unit won’t even be in 3c by the time your hunt comes around so if you live close to 3a I’d spend a little time up there as those elk don’t have a rez to hide on.

Ok.  I'll take your advice, thanks.

If it cost $0 to scout that’s what you should be doing then, not asking us where to hunt. Every time I go scouting it’s not cheap. But I go and learn and enjoy finding my own places to hunt.

I didn't say that it's cheap, gas costs money.  I said I'd rather spend my own time scouting than paying a guide $3,500.  I dont have the money to pay someone for a week to walk me to an area to find elk.  You guys are brutal.

yeah you did and then went back and edited it. Many people saw it myself included. But no worries. If you ever want to meet up and maybe talk about the unit give me a call.

Yes, it was edited after my comment because I did notice I said "buck" vs elk after my reply.  I did admit it in the parentheses stating I "probably said it without thinking".  Don't think it was worth a group discussion, though.  No worries.

I live between Pinedale and Clay Springs and so i live in the middle of the unit. Any Idea how much money I spent on gas alone last year scouting??? I'll give you a hint it was real close to $3500. Everything I know about the units which is less than some and quite a bit more than others has taken me 30+ years to accumulate.  I stand by my advice. start driving the roads, learn the unit and talk to people. More than likely you will run into me at some point and I'll be happy to talk to you. I drive an 2010 Tundra that has dents, and dings and always has mud/dirt on it.  It has been well used.  Most of us will help if a person puts in a little effort, not just asking for

I'd rather spend my time & $s in sweat equity for the experience rather than a guide.  I dont think there's much fun in paying for memories if they're not earned.

I thought I saw you live close to snowflake.  You live closer than most to this unit. Talk to some locals. You have a lot of time before the hunt. Boots on the ground and lots of glassing and you will do just fine. Get a flatline map or on x. Learn water sources and trails. And all canyons where good bulls hide during the late season.  Put in your time and you should have and opportunity to fill your tag.

I do live just outside Snowflake.  The folks I've spoken to don't hunt but am still asking around.

Thanks for your support and advice.

Zeke was simply making an analogy.   90% of the people on this forum are what I would consider to be "hard core" hunters. We put in a whole lot of effort and believe it or not we actually (for the most part) like to help people.  The problem with a new member is most of the time they show up right after the draw asking for help when they haven't helped contribute for the greater good. They get the help they need and then never return to say thanks or even share the story of their success. You may be the type or maybe not. Point is this makes people feel unwilling to help because in the end its often in appreciated.

The wrong question to ask is where do I go? The right thing to ask is how do I hunt this unit on this particular hunt?

And I'm  honestly not trying to be rude but you called a bull elk a buck and called deer deers.  It's hard to take you seriously because most new hunters know the difference.  And even worse you live in the unit your hunting, you should be the one we are asking for help.  Again, really not trying to be mean just trying to explain why your getting the reaction that you are getting.

I'll definately share my experiences after the hunt.  When I first started this thread, I asked about 3C for bull elk & some one said "whatever you do, dont shoot a buck or you'll be in trouble"  I never called a buck an elk that I can remember (maybe I did without thinking).

I'm learning (and new to elk hunting) so my question is how does one hunt 3C in November knowing the season is basically over & bull elk are "done for the day" from rutting & fighting?  I'll put leather on the ground & hike each day on the hunt.

Whether it's the wrong question or not, I still think it's reasonable to ask where.  Someone did share with me a cple areas & do very much appreciate the help and advise given.  I wont be intruding on anybody's turf, it's a big forest and end of the season.  I don't live in the unit 3C I intend to hunt,  it's 1-2 hrs away.  I do live in the Unit 3A area but the few months I have lived here, I've seen nothing, notta.

Kev, thanks for the input.  I hear what you're saying.

Whoa I was all about trying to help until you referred to hunting as a "hobby". First thing, this is a true primal passion for many red blooded men world wide. If you approach this with a laissez-faire reaction you're going to get a crappy hunt. Don't expect people who they're live their entire year for the fall to want to help you much at all with a ho-hum approach. Just try to have fun with your new hobby. You could also build model planes or cars, make beer or print t-shirts for your friends. Don't put this on the same level as that stuff. Most of our Falls are planned around killing something.

Please, don't misconstrue my thoughts.  Zeke-BE referred my communication as taking over a business with no experience and , basically, getting secret spots.

I, in no way, consider hunting as a hobby.  Hunting, since I moved here in 1995 was a passion of mine.  Circumstances in my career have kept me from pursuing my passion of hunting elk.  I've hunted dove, but never was lucky enough for the elk draw. I'm only asking for help on locations or "general locations" for my hunt.  I'm on my own so any help I can get is helpful.
