Great front tine length on that shiras bull. I imagine it was inside the park?

quail season question
Schmitty replied to yotebuster's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Personally, I don't like to shoot quail in the last 1/2 hour of daylight as I like them to have a chance to covey back up and get back to the roost increasing their chances of survival. Just a thought. Schmitty -

I can't believe the body size of that buck, not to mention that his horns aren't too shabby either. He's got it all, good length, he carries his mass all the way up and look at the length on that right prong! I was beginning to wonder what had happened with your hunt. How was the performance of that Berger? I used the same bullet on a NM goat this year out of my 6.5-06AI at the exact same distance. Resulted in a tennis ball sized hole on the off side shoulder, but suprisingly I lost very little meat. I'm just curious what your results were. As always, thanks for the write up and photos. prone with a bipod and rear rest (pack works fine) is about as field steady as a guy can get. I also have the 5-25 so I can use it sitting, but I only feel confident out to 400 seated. Oftentimes the grass and brush is too tall to even get a seated shot, so I carry the gun claw on a 701HDV head and a relatively stout tripod as well for shots where I need to get higher. The claw with a rear rest is pretty doggone steady, though not nearly as nice as prone with a bipod. With the claw standing (no rear rest I'm pretty consistent on steel out to 500. Seated with a rear rest buys me a couple hundred more yards. Hope this helps, Schmitty

Casey, I've got a 4.5-14x50 Mark 4 LR/T w/ M1 turrets and duplex reticle (30mm tube) that I could let go. You know I take care of my stuff and this scope is dead nuts repeatable, lenses are clear, there's a small scratch up on the bell http://swfa.com/Leupold-45-14x50-Mark-4-LR...cope-P1750.aspx I'd like to get $775 for it. let me know, Craig

Sorry for my lack of camera skills! I wasn't as concerned as I should have been about getting it all on film. As I believe you can hear me say on camera (with a little editing for the children) "Just $#@#@ kill him, don't worry about me or the camera!" I'll do better on the next go round. We had a great time and ended up sharing camp with the folks/outfitter who purchased the Landowner tags. They were extremely gracious, and great all around folks to be around. There weren't too many big bucks around, but I can't imagine having a better time. We accomplished what we set out to do, which was to see some new country, have as much fun as possible, and to make good clean kills. Both bucks were on ice within 45 minutes of being shot and have provided some mighty fine eating for our families. Finding ourselves done by noon on opening day, we took the scenic route home roaming thru the high country of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Talk about some pretty country! Next time I'm throwing in a fishing pole! Good times were had by all and I apologize if videos of my ugly mug damage your computer screen! Shoot straight! Schmitty

Thanks for posting some incredible artwork and that is one SICK buck! What's the story on the deer? Is this for a private residence? I'd love to see it in person. Schmitty

I've spotted Illegals top to bottom of the unit in the flats and along the peaks. Whether it's too dangerous is your call as there is inherent risk in all you do. As for big bucks, they are spread throughout the unit as well in the flats, foothills and mountains. The biggest issue with 36C is limited access points pinch most hunters into similar locales. Be prepared to do alot of walking in the dark and stay out all day. Have fun, Schmitty

Depends on the year and where you hunt. There are a bunch of tanks and you should be able to find a couple to have to yourself. Traffic really decreases after the first weekend. If you only have one week to hunt, I'd suggest the 2nd week as you'll only have 1/4 of the folks and the rutting action is typically better. good luck, Schmitty

Man, That's alot of critters right there! Are you going with all European mounts? Looks like a heck of a good time! take care, Craig

Pretty amazing that 400 acres on the Coconino could burn right now. Just went for a hike in the PNF and there's still water running down most decent drainages and plenty of standing water.

I'll take both stocks. PM me with details. thanks, Schmitty

Pretty impressive, but pales in comparison to the gal up here that ran the mile plus back to her car w/ a rabid fox attached to her arm. She even got a spot on Letterman! http://www.dcourier.com/main.asp?SectionID...ArticleID=61023 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZfsAykwyS4

If it were a bean and cheese burrito from Chile Pepper/Mr. G's down in Yuma I might be inclined to believe you. The Yuma guys know what I'm talking about! But from Taco Bell??? Might be good on day 5 of a backpack trip!!! Can't deny the quick, cheap and easy though!

Bog Pod shooting sticks.....switcheroo or other head?
Schmitty replied to flyingbrass's topic in Optics and tripods
I just leave "the claw" attached to my rifle and when it's time to shoot, I pull off the optics and slide the claw in. Takes about 10 seconds and is comparable to a bipod in steadiness. (only with the bogen 701HDV head) I've not had an opportunity to use it on deer, but a few coyotes have bit the dust out to 400. Hope this helps. Schmitty -
