    Utah Hunt 2012 VIDEO

Coach- Thanks Again. The fades, and transitions are done in the video editing program. The slides are done using a slider. I have a Konova K3 slider that can either be set on its own legs or mounted on a tripod. One of the things I try to do its put together a "shot list" either on paper or just in my head well before a hunt. I try to have the flow and sequence put together prior to going out to shoot. I do this for photography and the video. Look at it as scouting.. Get inspiration from other videos and photographs you seen and put your own twist on it. Video is based on still photography and understanding composition is key to a good photo or video. The human eye is naturally drawn to certain compositions and you take your shots per those "rules". Those rules are meant to broken too sometimes. The other thing that is probably the most important thing is lighting and seeing how it effects your subject. One of my problems I have is (especially when I have a tag in my pocket) is to take the time and video or photograph in prime light conditions. Unfortunately prime lighting times coincide with prime critter movement... Just like glassing the tripod is your friend in still photography and video. Use the cameras capabilities to create the feel you want. I shot this with a DSLR not a video camera and used a lens with a large aperture to control the depth of field which can make an ordinarily boring shot, interesting. One of the hardest things to do especially if you are hunting also is to MAKE yourself stop and take THOUGHTFUL shots. The guys I hunt with always give me crap because Im lagging behind taking pictures and video but after the hunt always appreciate the fact its well documented. If I had any type of advise its to learn basic photography concepts and it will make your photography better and also your video. Youtube is an amazing resource when it comes to video and photography tips too. Just search it and you will learn a ton I promise. Another thing to think about is taking video of "fill" shots, to use in your editing. These can be as simple as a leaf fluttering in the wind or a squirrel running up a tree. They're short but when used to fill in between scenes it adds body to the video and helps in making transitions as well. Honestly there is a revolution happening when it comes to documenting our passion of hunting. Like you said in a previous post the hunting shows that are out today are sponsor driven many times but also so many focus on an "over the shoulder" view of the hunt. With the amount of hunting footage out there I think people are getting tired of it. I can honestly say if I never had to watch a video of an eastern whitetail shot out of tree stand I wouldn't be that upset.. But in saying that you can take something like that which has been shown a million times and still make it intersting with a little artistic perspective. See some links below to some videos that are paving a new way to documenting and showcasing what we love to do. As far as companies go, Sitka seems to be leading the way. This is were I want to be someday. https://vimeo.com/45541560 https://vimeo.com/41513497 https://vimeo.com/25003719 https://vimeo.com/38869837 https://vimeo.com/30883590 https://vimeo.com/48019910 Hope this answers some of your questions. If you have any more please let me know. Ill do my best to answer them! Thanks, Jay

    does anybody know this person?

I could not stop laughing at this one! I really think Amanda should come up with the Lark doll. You know the kind that has the pull string in the back and when you pull it it blurts out famous Lark quotes. She would sell millions!

    Pork Fat

Just another thing to add. Another thing I use to add a little fat and flavor to hamburger or sausage are bacon ends and pieces. You can get them at some grocery stores and/or costco or Sams and they typically come in a bulk package. Really adds some nice smokey flavor to whatever your making. Jay

    THIS HAPPENED TO ME!!!

Allright I have one more too... A couple years ago My son and I hiked up onto the peaks to check a trail cam. We had my two labs with us and after we chacked the cam we started back down the mountain. Conner was about 4 at the time so it was slow going between him walking and me carrying him. As we came into a meadow the dogs took off to my left and they started barking like crazy. They were on the trail of something but I couldnt make out what it was. Soon i saw it was a turkey and they were on its heels. They kept going in this big circle snapping at that birds tail feathers. Im screaming at the dogs to come back to me but they were dead set on getting this huge bird! looking back the thing must have been injured previous because of the way it was acting. it was trying to fly but we were up in that thck spruce so it didnt have ebnough runway area for lift off. i continue to try and get the dogs off this thing when all the sudden it comes running right at us. It slowly lifted off and was flying about 2 ft off the ground. Conner was standing next to me just watching when I realized this bird is gonna run right into us. As i bend down to pick up Conner the bird is about 10 feet from us and must have seen us at that moment. It veered off to the side right towards the tree in front of us but didnt have time to avoid it. It slammed into the tree likee a sack of potatoes! It hit the ground got up and ran up over the ridge out of sight with the dogs on its heels. I was just standing there is awe and i looked down at Conner and asked him" What did you think of that?" He just responded "WOW!" Caught up to the dogs and now dead turkey. It must have busted its wing when it hit the tree. And to this day unfortunatlety i can say the my dog has killed more turkeys than i have... Jay
