Are the Southern Units Really That Dangerous?
NRS replied to AZMThunter's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
No one was hit, everyone got out of there safely. The bad guys had disappeared by the time more law enforcement got there. -
It is now up to 200 acres and you can see it from Tucson, looks like it is burning in grass and light brush. should do some good habitat improvement for the deer down there.

Are the Southern Units Really That Dangerous?
NRS replied to AZMThunter's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Sounds like it is true that the 3 G&F people were shot at, it was on the Tucson news this morning. -
Try contacting the Socorro field office and see if they can help you out. Here is their contact info. Socorro Field Office Bureau of Land Management 901 S. Highway 85 Socorro, NM 87801-4168 (575) 835-0412 (575) 835-0223 FAX

They typically do not map fires unless they have an incident management team on the fire. The best thing to do is goout before green up and take some topo maps and map it your self. They used existing roads to stop the fire, so it should not be to hard to drive around it and figure out what burned. It looks like they used the box canyon road and the helvitia road as control lines.

Game Hauler is correct that they are managing fires to remove the built up fuels in the area and rejuvenate the vegetation that the wildlife depends on. The other and more important factor is that they manage fires to protect the firefighters lives by building the fire lines where they can safely stop the fire without getting anyone hurt. Of all the large fires going in the Southwest Area, this is the only one that has a incident management team on it, which means it get priority over the other fires for resources.

AZ G&F being sude over capture & tranq of Macho B
NRS replied to azhuntergirl's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
As always, they have shown their intent to sue even before the investigation into the incident is completed, showing their lack of knowledge if criminal law. If the Fish and Wildlife investigation comes up with no criminal or civil fault, CBD will be thrown out of court again. Maybe then AZ G&F will sue them like the Chiltons's did and get some money back for the frivolous law suit. -
Fire Restrictions for Memorial Day Weekend
NRS replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Non-hunting trip reports
Here is where you can check on all fire restrictions in the state. http://www.publiclands.org/firenews/AZ.php Various parts of the State Lands and BLM lands also went into fire restrictions last week as well. -
Sounds like the typical media hype about something that is really nothing. There is also a ground based part of the system that is being built that will make up for some lost satellites, at a lot less cost.

For a good sharp image satellite photos of areas you want to check out, go to Yahoo Maps and click on satellite button after you put the cross hairs in the place you want to look at. I found a 20 ft diameter water tank and drinker on the photo that I helped build in the Galiuro's about 20 years ago that I bet will not show up on any maps.

One possible use by ranchers was to direct goats toward their corrals as the herders moved them around the mountains. Raising goats for mohair was very common in Arizona in the 1930's. It could be that the goat herders also used what was already there as a hunting trap that was there for centuries.

Since you are young and just starting your hunting career, just about any Wilderness Area in Southeastern Arizona will hold Coues deer and have areas that you can pack in to. Start by doing some research on hunting and draw success rates in units that hold wilderness areas with higher elevations. Half the fun of hunting is figuring out where you are going to put in for, and then scouting the area once you get drawn.

If you look at the feet, they do not have hooves, but have toes out front like a dog. The hair is to fine to be a javalina, so I vote for dog.

Looks like a Western Patch Nosed snake, it has the extra smaller stripe down the sides. they live in your area where the Eastern patch nosed is only in eastern az.

If all you are dong is cleaning out built up sediment or patching holes in a leaky pipe sort of things, you probably will have no problems with the land management agencies. Anything that requires digging new ground or building something, you should contact the agency and talk to the biologist that works that area and explain what you would like to do. You may get the go ahead or find out that they are actually planning on doing it in the near future.

I know of a rancher that usually kills between 50-100 a year, and they do more damage to wildlife than livestock.

Just bugs me

Keith, Great response to the garbage that they sent you!! -
First and foremost is accuracy! What your gun shoots the best groups with is what to go with. With front stuffers, once you reach the amount of powder that can be burned within the barrel, any extra is just blown out the barrel and does not do you any good. Most muzzleloader bullets drop velocity rapidly because of their large diameter and low ballistic coefficient so just plan on getting within 100 yards with what ever your gun shoots most accurately and you will have a dead elk if you do your part and get it right into the boiler room.

Generally any BLM office in Arizona can make you a custom map of any hunt unit in the state for about $15.00 if you ask. They are on paper.
