  1. You might want to find out whose land you are digging the hole on to place it. If it is federal, you could get into big trouble.

    What's burning in 36B?

There is a fire on Montana Peak in 36b. It was about 250-300 acres this morning, probably bigger now with the winds today.
  3. I usually see 2-3 a year, almost always in March and April.

  6. Great writeup and pictures. Did you notice any ear tags in the sheep?? If there were no tags, they are probably young animals born since the first release of sheep in the area about 5 years ago. Most of the area that you covered up Walnut canyon to the artesian well and through the White Canyon Wilderness were not on the official Arizona Trail. The official trail is still under construction farther west of the wilderness and also goes through some beautiful country.

    Officials euthanize AZ jaguar

The Research Branch is making your hunting opportunities better. The Arizona Deer Association and the AGFD research branch have been involved for the last three years doing research on the Kaibab. This research project is just finishing up, but you may recall AGFD just issued a press release suggesting that the cliffrose monitoring they were using as part of the decision making process regarding tag numbers was not reliable. Therefore, they are recommending to the commission to not use that data during this year's hunt recommendations when they set hunting permits for the Kaibab. This is research providing guidance to the game branch and the deer herd benefitting from it. There is much more research being done up there that will allow us to know more about the current state of the herd in relation to the winter range. This is all data that will allow for better management of the herd there. There are also other research projects such as the one in the three-bar wildlife area that focused on causes of fawn mortality and then there is the one that has been mentioned here studying lion and bear movements in the sky islands. All of these projects provide information so that game managers can make better informed decisions. Amanda A good example of making your hunting better is the research done by G&F on coues deer in the sonoita area, and the Mearns and scaled quail studies in the same area. They have also done some ground breaking research on the value of water to wildlife in the desert that proved wrong many of the myths that the anti hunters have been pushing on how they increase predation and poison wildlife.

    Officials euthanize AZ jaguar

I received a forwarded e-mail from some one in the know on the whole thing. It detailed many things that have not shown up in the newspapers about the whole capture and recapture including how many of the most knowledgeable experts on the jaguar were involved in the whole capture and re-capture of macho B and most of them do not work for the G&F. There is a whole Jaguar Conservation Team for Arizona and New Mexico that had previously established working protocols for an incident like this where a jaguar is accidentally captured so the whole issue had been seriously thought out and discussed long before macho B was captured. An independent vet checked him out in the field before the decision was made to re-capture him, and then he was flown to the best wildlife vets in the country at the Phoenix Zoo. As IL2H said, macho-b had to be sedated to remove him from the snare anyway. The researchers said that the information that they received from the radio collar was invaluable, and even in death he will provide information on how the populations in the US is connected with those in Sonora. and why many of our favorite hunting units allowed him to live longer than any other known jaguar in the wild, even with hunting seasons, smuggling and trash. Chances are his days were numbered anyway, and if he had not been captured, he would have died in the very near future. As the vet that autopsied him said "I expect the histopathology reports to show that this animal had been experiencing kidney failure for awhile. Kidney failure is more a matter of weeks or months, not days.” Maybe some people should put their personal biases about agencies aside and realize that the people in the field doing research are doing the best they can to gather information on often very secretive animals. What they do on a day in-day out basis would be comparable to any of us hunters being able to go out and find a 110+ coues every week and writing a small book about what our conclusions on doing it at the end of the year.
  13. thanks for the link. I learned something new from it after living and hunting in this state for 55 years... We have a new species called FOPES as listed on the first page under small game.

    Jaguar Collared in SO AZ

The picture looks like that may be the one they call Macho B, who they have photographed off and on in the units 36a,b,and c for the last 13 years, so many of us have had lots of opportunity to see him. He has also not appeared to have affected antler size in those units. Since he and others have been roaming the area for the last 15 years, the Fish and Wildlife Service have pretty well worked out all of the conservation measures for the jaguars already and there probably will not be any changes to management of the areas where they roam.

    Finding the passion again.

Prayers have been sent. God gave you a great gift when he put those mentors in your life that taught you so much and fired your passion up. You can in turn use the passion and gift from God to mentor others as you were mentored. Find a church and get involved in the men's group or as a mentor to jr high or high school groups and teach them about the outdoors and hunting.
  20. "There are a lot of things that Obama is changing, or is going to change, that will be steering this great nation away from doing things God's way." The Bible tells us how to tell prophets (truthful people) from false prophets ( untruthful people) in 1 John 4:1-3 NIV. It is interesting that it even talks about deceiving the elected.
