    Where am I?

Go to the last page, last picture. or go through the entire picture album until you recognize the truck.

    One busted up bull

I think that is just fat hanging that gives him that look. If he had been hit by a car in the last couple of months, he would not be so rolly-polly fat. He is so fat there is no muscle definition in the hind quarters, and no sign of a backbone sticking up.

    Deer & Cattle

Bowsniper... That is a 30+ year old photo from the BLM archives of what the San Pedro looked like while it was in PRIVATE OWNERSHIP BY THE OWNERS OF THE CHEVRON OIL COMPANY. granted the area looks a lot different now with no cattle on it for 20 years, but then so does the state and forest service lands to the west of the SP, and they are grazed but still have good grass cover. Or look at the Las Cienegas National Conservation Area that is also grazed and still has a huntable herd of antelope which is a rarity in southern Arizona.
  4. That same drug smuggler was convicted today for more smuggling while he had a special pass to cross the border to testify against the agents.

    Deer & Cattle

I have to agree with Lark, even though I am a professional in the wildlife management field. I do work for the feds and can assure you that the overgrazing of the range is a thing of the past for the public lands of the state. State trust lands may still have some problems, but that is because they only have 5 people to watch 9 million acres. As in all things there are always bad apples that think the rules are for everybody but them, whether they are ranchers or poachers. As Lark stated in a post, the rancher put waters in and the deer population went up. The cost of the water development probably came out of the ranchers pocket, which is figured into the cost of leasing the land for grazing for $1.35 per animal per month. You as a hunter, did not pay for that increase in the number of deer, but you can benefit from it if you get a tag for that area. The figure of 2% of the cattle coming from ranches in the west is very misleading. In reality, that number does not count the cattle that go to the feed yard or winter wheat pastures in Kansas and Nebraska from ranches before going to slaughter. Fence line contrast pictures look dramatic, but can be misleading. All they do is show where the cattle have eaten off 30% of the plants top, which is about 60% of the plants height because most of a grasses mass is at the base and is still available for wildlife. Just where are you seeing cattle in the canyons that you are glassing for sheep?? Cattle are lazy creatures and don't tend to get into sheep habitat because it is too steep. Studies in Aravaipa Canyon and the Silverbell mountains have clearly shown that. "We need cows because the ranchers build all the water holes for all the critters to drink at, right?" That is correct. When was the last time that you caught a "verde trout" or a "3 foot long "salt river salmon" out of the Salt River in Phoenix, Tempe or Avondale? We have drastically altered the water sources and built freeways that cut off travel corridors to waters from food and cover that the wildlife uses. Livestock grazing is just one of the many uses of public lands, just like hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, birdwatching or just cruising through the back country on a ATV.

    Sheep

The photo was actually taken near Hoover Dam. The big ram actually ran into the side of a Honda CRV in front of us, denting up the side and tearing off the rear view mirror. Then just stood there staring the lady down for about 10 minutes. i should have recognized that place, that is where I killed my ram in 2000 :D

    Sheep

Looks like Silverbell sheep over by the mine. They are pretty used to vehicles, or if you are on foot below them as they see a lot of vehicles in the mine and nobody bothers them. Looks like he needs to grow for another 4-5 years before being harvested so he can put some mass on those horns.
  9. The decision that a hunting license was valid for access to state trust land was an opinion from the Arizona Attorney General based on the laws and the state constitution. The Atty. general at the time was Bruce Babbitt, who is still alive and living in Arizona.

    Rocky Mnt. Bighorn Pictures

Congratulations on drawing a great tag!! Those last two rams are real boomers. Good luck on putting a tag on a monster, you obviously know how to find them judging on the last two pictures. Wish I had your tag
  11. They had to add extra security to some of the big fires in California because the pot farmers were shooting at the firefighters trying to put the fires out. Law enforcement over there has also been busy raiding 2-3 big pot farms a week and getting anywhere from 15,000-20,000 plants at a time. When they catch the farmers they are illegals working for the big drug cartels.
  12. It could be a black phase of the coachwhip, which is more common and is known to eat rattlesnakes. http://www.reptilesofaz.com/Snakes-Subpage...-flagellum.html
  13. I had a boss one time that had a piece of a log with a mule deer antler that had grown into a tree from the N.Kiabab.
  14. Not me Dude primetime, you got me thinking about the pumps. There is a spot I go to every now and again, where I swear I hear what I thought was a generator. This has been going on for the better part of 10 years so. I kinda doubt they were doing pumps that long ago but who knows. There is a much heavier used trail going into that country now GH I ran into set ups for pumps at least 15 years ago north of Black Canyon City. If there is water back-of-beyond, they will figure a way to use it.

    Outdoor fears Part 2

+1 to KGAINES comment. I have worked in the woods and hills all my life. I know about all of the natural hazards and respect them, and how to take the appropriate precautions around them. The things that are scary are the people that are not out legally hunting, the trucks stashed in the brush and the waterlines in the middle of nowhere that do not go to a livestock trough. At times we have had to have law enforcement escort in order to do our work because of the people hazards.

    DRAW RESULTS UP!!!!

My partner filled out the apps, something went wrong between picking out our units and the draw... We are now the proud??? holders of tags # 5 and 6, unit 41 mid Nov any antlered. All that talk on here about how great unit 41 is for coues must have jinxed the G&F computer so it did not give us our 33 or 36c tags.
  19. After slipping on a hillside and ending up flat on my back with my legs spread wide and a century plant between them with points about 2 inches from where the legs join together, getting hurt while hunting is my number one fear.
  20. Here is an article from the denver Post about him. http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_9857832
  21. they probably needed to put something in the system to test it, then they watch the discussion forums to see if it is really working, then late some night they will slip in the real information and take bets on how long it takes us to find out that the real information is posted.
  22. Most of the good ones get picked up within days, then recycled at the Tanque Verde Swap meet or hauled back to Mexico to be sold to a new bunch trying to cross the border. If yo want a shiny one, you have to be quick to beat out the recyclers.
