    Crappie ?

I've tried a few times so far this year, haven't had much luck. Hopefully it picks up soon. Last time I went for slabs was a few weeks ago. I was bass fishing there Monday afternoon/night and the bite was real good. There are shad everywhere in that lake. Should be a good year.

Are the fish Biting at Roosevelt?

The bass fishing has been great. Flip your favorite soft plastics into the submerged trees. Starting to also pick up some on topwater. For catfish I would head to the Salt end of the lake. Good luck.

    Barlett Reservior

It will be packed Memorial weekend. Camping is tough as the lake is really high and alot of the spots are now under water. With that being said, I've had good luck lately there up river past the no-wake buoys. Are you looking for bass or crappie?

    Lake Pleasant striped bass

Now that hunting season is over, I've been hitting the lakes more often. Doing pretty good lately for stripers at Pleasant. Two weekends ago we put over 30 on the boat, with a few whites and largemouth mixed in. Was out on Tuesday and landed 12 stripers, but we spent more time on the largemouth. They are moving up shallower and alot more active. Saw a guy stick a nice 6-7lb largie up Castle Creek. The carp are shallow, too, and thrashing all around. Would be fun for the bow-fishers. Good luck

    Lake Pleasant striped bass

RR - we have fished at the mouth of the Agua Fria near the closure buoys and have done alright for the whites. I'd like to do the hike off Table Mesa to get back in, as I'm sure the whites and stripers are going nuts back there. By far Cottonwood Cove has been the best to us for whites. KP- we've been catching them all day. Have not noticed a difference between morning or afternoon trips.

    Lake Pleasant striped bass

KP - we have been catching them all over the lake, but Castle Creek and Cottonwood Cove have been the most productive for us. The channel leading into Cottonwoood has been on fire lately. I've caught them on a variety of baits: deep-diving cranks, x-raps, and soft jerkbaits. I've been experimenting with 4" & 5" Gulp minnows and jerkshads in pearl on a darter-head, and have done well. Live bait just hammers them, though. Get a net full of shad, or cut anchovies, and your in for a fun day. I fish that on basically a carolina rig, with a long flourocarbon leader and small hook, on a line-counter reel. We drift the channel in 20 - 50 ft of water, and use the electronics to keep the bait near the bottom. Good luck.

    Bowfishing tourney?

I was at Roosevelt on Monday and the carp were going nuts in the shallow water. The lake is real high and we were hitting all the submerged brush for bass. The carp were in there slurping and slapping at the surface and cruising around in packs. Looks like it would be fun with a bow.

    Wha-Wha-What???

I've heard all kinds of speculation about the new Mathews, everything from 340fps solocams to new cam & 1/2 or dual cams. We'll find out soon enough. I don't care what they end up eating, these new bows sound interesting.

    Nephew's 1st Elk

I spent the weekend in 6A helping my nephew Jonathon on his first elk hunt. My brothers and I have had a few archery hunts in that area in the past, so we were pretty confident that we would get him on some elk. My youngest brother and I arrived Friday night to reports of few elk and no shots fired or heard. I had been up the month prior helping some friends on their archery hunt and scouted a few new areas which held promise. We hit up one of the spots Saturday morning and at first light heard a weak bugle. We moved in a little closer and set up, but nothing materialized. After a while we moved to a saddle and were glassing a small canyon. My youngest nephew does a great cow call with his mouth. He made a few calls, and shortly after we spot a few hunters sneaking in to the sounds. At this point the kids are getting tired and hungry so we decide to still hunt back to the truck. Rounding a bend, dad spots a herd feeding 100 yards out. Jonathon get's set up to shoot and a cow steps into the clear. BOOM! I didn't hear any impact and the cow didn't react at all. He loads another round, but holds off on his shot as he can't re-acquire the same cow and didn't want to shoot a different one in case he had hit the first one. The herd eventually spooks and I can see the cow was not hit. We make our way over to where they were and confirm there is no hair or blood or any sign of a hit. He was disappointed in missing, but we assured him he did the right thing by not shooting another without first making sure he didn't hit the first one. Sunday morning we try a new area. After a few hours, all that was spotted are cattle. We start looping back around to the truck and spot a lone 4 point bull. We watch him feed off, then see some wild horses in the distance. After about 100 yards, my youngest nephew says he see's some elk and points to where the horses were. I'm thinking he has spotted the horses, but pull up the binocs and sure enough here comes a herd of about 40 elk. My brother and Jonathon start crawling up closer and are soon within 150 yards of the herd. I can see Jonathon getting ready to shoot, then catch movement off to my right. Ten cow have split from the herd and are angling right to us. My brother see's this also, and re-positions his boy. The first 6 walk by at 100 yards but never stop for a shot. Then one comes by at 80 yards and stops broadside. CRACK! She buckles and hobbles two steps. CRACK! She's down for good and Jonathon throws up his arms and let's out a yell. Here he is with his first elk. Here's some fresh backstraps that we enjoyed that night. I also want to thank azcouesandelk & 125coues and the AZ Elk Society for the camp they had set up. The kids really liked the hats they got as well as shooting the bows. Good to talk hunting with you, Christian. Kris

I'll be heading up this afternoon to help my nephew on his cow elk hunt. We'll be in a black Ford Ranger and tan Suburban, somewhere off of FR 81. Stop by and say hello if you're in the area, will have plenty of cold beverages. Good luck to all the youths this weekend. Kris

    A First For Me

One of my fondest memories was seeing my dad pinwheel a fox at 30 yards while in unit 8 when I was 10 years old. That thing jumped 2-3 feet straight in the air and then was out cold. I knew I wanted one then. Of course he played it off like that happens all the time, but years later, I've never seen another fox, and was starting to wonder if they were possible with a bow. Great shot, and congrats.

    World Record Bull

Noel, I don't think I hit on ALL the reasons why auction tags are not good. I can think of a few more. What do you think?

    Holy moly......Shed Collection

Thank you so much for sharing your collection. It is quite impressive. I am curious about the locked sets. Would you say your sets expired from being entangled, or were there injuries to skull plates, etc. that may have lead to death?

    World Record Bull

That bull is just amazing. Congrats to the hunter and guides. All these rumors about the bull escaping from a pen or being juiced are pretty silly. However, it seems there has been quite a bit of controversy surrounding auction hunts lately. Is alot of it fueled out of others jealousy? Sure it is. But I also think other hunters are concerned about what exactly hunting could become, and what effects these actions could mean to future generations. This is not jealousy, but a concern for our sport. I think these issues need to be looked at and discussed. I have mixed feelings about the circumstances regarding these hunts. On the one hand, you can't argue with the money these tags bring in and the benefit it has on wildlife. On the other hand, you get stuff like multiple guides sitting on animals for months, finders fees, shooting bulls in sub-divisions, etc. These things raise red flags not only with some hunters, but more importantly with some non-hunters. We need to ask ourselves, what could this lead to, and is it worth it?
