    Governor Tag

There actually is two coues permits if I am not mistaken. One went for around 13000.00 at the Phoenix ADA auction and I think the other went for around 8000.00 down in Tucson. I bet Amanda can confirm the actual amounts. As for the 116 I have not heard the rumors yet but I would guess the Gov. tag buck should be a tag bigger than that.....(not that I wouldnt plug one that big) it just seems that with all the guys calling around with big ones located, the tag holder would have the pick of the litter of monster bucks over 129.....just my three cents............AT.........

Lark, I know spotlighting is still legal without guns in your vehicle. I dont know if AZGFD is going to keep this legal in the future but for this year its still legal......AT....

    Batchelor herds

I seem to see bachelor groups with one or two good bucks and a couple smaller 3x3, forkies and maybe a spike. In this unit when the bucks bed down I notice the bigger bucks move off 20 yards or so to bed down by themselves. Also I notice the bigger bucks seem to get irritated with any kidding around the smaller bucks do. I have seen these two bigger bucks (90plus each) turn around and horn at the smaller bucks like they were telling them to calm down. Anyway I dont tend to see lone big bucks, they are always on the fringe of a group early in the season and hang around with the other bucks......Allen.....

    jay gates crossing the border

Lark, I was down in Mexico this past January and had the pleasure of the shed horns I picked up confiscated by USFW at the nogales border crossing. I am friends with Jay Gates and am pretty familiar with what happened along with some new info put out by USFW to help minimize these types of situations. Ernesto is right, your outfitter should take care of most paperwork issues. Yes Jay has learned something but it cost him alot......Arizona Deer Association just had their hunters clinic and Jay Gates spoke, Doug McKenna from USFW spoke along with some others. This clinic and the people who spoke were intentionally there so we avoid these types of problems in the future. Both Jay and Doug want to see NO Problems at the border. Lark, I can fill you in on some details if you want but for everyone I want to make sure they understand the most of any problems with Mexico seem to be from the U.S. and not Mexican officials. We have alot of agencies like Border Patrol, USFW, Department of Agriculture etc.....and I think it creates alot of confusion. Anyone going to Mexico should call USFW here in Phoenix first to get a copy of their recommended proceedures. In addition to this, MuleyCrazy magazine has a checklist on their website and maybe Ernesto could do this here at Coueswhitetail so nobody else gets stuck at the border......Allen......

    commercialization

Thanks Kevin for posting this stuff. Please everyone send out the survey to all your friends and make sure they understand and support the 90/10 portion of the proposal. Basically without it we will have a FREE FOR ALL DRAW next year. Anyone that knows the commissioners or can post an email address so we can hammer them with emails would be great. I CANT EMPHASIZE ENOUGH how important this 90/10 support is for YOU AND YOUR KIDS FUTURE. Also dont try and figure out if it is CONSTITUTIONAL, the hunter supported Lawyer does this for a living and he sees this option as being acceptable to the courts. In addition to this, my personal feeling about "future lawsuits" would be that conservation groups start planning on saving money for the lawsuit (if USO can stay in business that long) and we as conservation groups/hunters support the AZGFD financially if we have to fight. To me this is cheaper and protects the herds from a huge influx of additional hunters. It will cost us for our herds but we will still have our herds.........Thanks to everyone for the support.......Allen......

    commercialization

The creative solutions were devised by a consolidation of conservation groups like ADA, Sheep Society etc......these groups came up with legally workable solutions by using a very reputable attorney by the name of Scott Bales. His specialty is commerce law and he helped draft the 90/10 option which in his professional estimation will satisfy judge bloomfield who ruled in the 9th circuit. Without this seperation of tags, next years draw will be a free for all. The present problem all of us face now is AZGFD total lack of backing or supporting the 90/10 rule. Steve Ferrel and Duane Schrouf definitely dont want to deal with any future problems, Duane just is short timing it looking to retire while Ferrel just wants to take Schrouf's job. The commissioners Gilstrap & Melton support the 90/10 while the other three are on the fence. Word is Golightly will not support the 90/10 for personal reasons. If we dont get one or more additional commissioners to support this issue then the AZGFD will let us hunters down once again by letting this next years draw be equal footing between non-res and residents...........I sure hope some people show up at the Phoenix public meeting tonight and voice there opinions...........AT.......

There is a very long post on here about David. The post has the original letter showing what David thinks about B&C as well as the public rebuttal B&C made after Davids letter......you should be able to pull this up somehow here or on Monster Muley's and see what everyone thought of the whole situation.......Allen.....

    Nonres tag meetings

We really need to hammer the commissioners on the 90%/10% commercial versus recreational tags. This portion of the proposal needs to be included in the Commissions recommendation to the AG......if not the draw next year will be a free for all.......The heads of the game dept. Duane Schrouff and Steve Ferrell are recommending against the 90/10 but the commissioners are split. We really must have this component in or all of our efforts have been for nothing.......send emails, overload the AZGFD and the commissioners with letters SUPPORTING THE COMMERCIAL/RECREATIONAL tags.........Allen TAylor.....

    Poachers and Their Supporters

Chris: I am proud to say I am one of the "Guys wasting time on the USO" situation. I went to an Arizona Deer Association meeting last night and discussed it. I will chair the Deer Clinic tonight and it will be a topic of discussion. I guess if you think fighting for my right to an equitable draw here in AZ is a waste of time you are entitled to your opinion. I sure as heck am not going to stop and spend time on the ONE POACHER you are concerned with when USO is definitely worse for deer/elk here in AZ. This little USO situation correlates into over 300 non-resident tags to the tune of 1,000,000.00 for old Georgey........If you truly are a western big game expert then the total affect of the 9th circuit ruling should have you concerned..........either way, I am fighting the fight I believe in and dont appreciate your perspective that people like myself are wasting time..........Allen Taylor.......

    Bradshaw Coues?

Its a slow saturday and nobody answered so I will give it a try. I dont know and am to lazy to look at where the Bradshaw mountains are at but low densities of coues can be because the area is on their geographic fringe where populations would be lower or they could be getting pounded by lions. I know unit 23 a couple years back was tough hunting around cherry creek area, it was hard to find the quantities of deer like you see in the southern units like 33. The lions have pounded 23 more than some units and its harder to Lion hunt in 23 than many other units so less lions are killed so the deer get pounded. I have rambled but maybe these two issues are affecting the Bradshaw's.........hopefully someone who knows the area can respond and help figure it out........Allen........

    usfws regs.

Doug McKenna and some of his staff will be at the Arizona Deer Association clinic to be held August 19th at 5:30 pm at the Mountain Preserve Center in Phoenix. Doug is the number one guy for Arizona with the USFWS. He will have a presentation and handouts clearing up any questions. In addition to Doug we will have Jay Gates, Duwane Adams and Jim White speaking on Mule Deer, Coues & Optics respectively. Many of your questions can be answered if you come to this meeting. We will raffle off guns etc.....and have a room set up for the kids to play the AZGFD fishing and hunting big screen games they had at the fairgrounds.........Hope to see you guys/gals there........Allen......

    Spotting Scopes

Newbie: I am originally from Olympia Wa and understand hunting the brush for blacktails. Everyone who has said get good bino's is right. I have swarovski 10 & 15's but spent a few years saving up. I know there now is Zeiss 15x45 for 550.00 that are american made and I would look into those if Swaro's are out of question for you. I think a spotter is great for field judging but most of your hunting will not be field judging but rather "finding" the bucks. I think your best money is not on a spotter but on great bino's/Tripod. Guessing Range and wind drift

Range finders are not cheating in my book. Actually I think anyone who isnt using one nowadays is only hurting the animal and their own chances of success. I guess if you think about humane kills and the difficulty of hitting a target over 300 yards that is as small as a coues, you should want a range finder......Allen.....

Help needed with a "problem" tag!

MoreD: This is a once in a lifetime type tag. I know you guys could go up blind and kill a buck but you really really should scout or hook up with a guide because there are Monsters there if you hunt/scout it right. We killed a 211 typical last year on the east side and the west side we shot a 208".....if you cant scout your buddy should see if he can scrape up $4,000.00 and have Arizona Big Game Hunts find him a monster. Duwane Adams is the outfitter and he has one opening for the west side if your interested......holler at me or Duwane.......my number is 602-454-2146........Duwane is at 520-385-4995..................Really not selling you a guided hunt, I just know how great a tag your buddy has and would like to see him kill a 190 plus buck........Allen.....

A new rule idea for Arizona

Lark, your neck was almost totally white in that post.......LOL........first off for the great lady that posted the original. You are correct in your post, I have two boys and a wife and all of us are tagless this year. I am looking into leasing a ranch in Agua Prieta Mexico for this year so I know we can hunt coues at least. It actually is going to be affordable, 2500 per person covers the tag and the ranch accomodations.........self guided....... As to the current AZGFD situation, they will have a solution that will work out for the majority and I am pretty sure it will favor the residents and protect the premium areas that USO is targeting. I think a ton of answers/potential answers will come out in the August commission meeting. As for predators........LARK..........you would have liked being at the ADA meeting we had a couple days ago with Steve Ferrell there.......Stanley was there along with me and it appears that the AZGFD will be coming forward publicly with a statement showing predators have had alot larger impact on wildlife in drought conditions. I know ADA supports your view of killing all the predators we can. There was a great lion hunter present at this meeting, Jim Bedlion who has shot 23 or so cats off 13A & 13B the past five years. There is a real push to kill all we can on the strip and then spread out through the state once the AZGFD shows the results of three-bar and how the rest of the state's wildlife could thrive with a reduction in Predators. Anyway I hope I am not to optimistic but I think come August we will see a better picture of the future.............LARK FOR COMMISSIONER>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Allen...................

    Arizona looses court case!

I will be there today........I am really hoping against all odds that something good can come of this. The alternative is scary........I really believe Lark and others are correct........the AZGFD/Commissioners/Attorney Generals office is responsible for not stopping this when they had the chance. I hope the grass roots effort helps force AZGFD to do the right things..........Allen Taylor.....

    Attendees at the 7-16 Meeting

I was there till rght at the end. I spoke twice with my opinions and questions/thought processes I wanted to make sure the commission was thinking about. Bottom line for now, the best we can do for this years draw is to send our support to AZGFD via email this weekend that says for them to ask Judge Bloomfield to allow this years draw to go through and we can all work on a solution for AZGFD to implement another draw system that is not discriminatory for 2005. I hope to be there for Mondays meeting.......Allen Taylor......

Hope all goes well getting the final product soon............Allen.........p.s. I could be trained to put the camera on my tripod instead of the 15's.........I work pretty cheap too.........just throw in a Mexico coues tag and we can call it even........LOL.......Allen.......
