    Not a hunting conservation group, but I didn't know where else to post this.

     

    My wife, who was diagnosed with MS a couple of years ago, is doing a charity walk to raise money for MS research. I would appreciate it if some of you could donate to her team.     I come here because there's good stories, good pictures and good people. I think of the debate between mulie and coues hunters a lighthearted one. Don't make it a serious one. The problem with the web, is when you don't know someone, you can't tell the tone they type in.     I've hunted easterns, mulies and coues. They can all be tough, they can all be easy. It's just as hard to find a nice mulie in the flats, as a coues in the hills. I've had mulies walk right by me, and coues sit at a trailhead parking lot, and watch me get out of my truck and get on my way without running. If you look at success rates outside of the strip,or Dec hunts in some units, not much is a gimmie. Carp deer huh? How much did the mule deer vs coues deer auction tag go for?

    The more we can do for our youth's, the better. They are our future!! We do not have children, but our favorite volunteer work is anything involved with the youth. I would give up a general hunt to make sure the youth's get opportunity.

     

     

     

     

    You should contact TLH about helping at the 23 camp this year. It's a lot of fun.

    As far as the copper, you can get a small piece to practice with, and try hitting it with a ball peen hammer, or a hammer and a round tipped punch to get the texture you want. You may be able to find it pretextured, but I haven't seen it. As for the antiquated look, you can use a lacquer to coat it after you get the texture. The lacquer will also keep it from oxidizing.

    Whitetail deer in Unit 6A are somewhat restricted to the lower half of the unit. If you plan to hunt Unit 6A, it is recommend you hunt the lower elevation canyons that generally fall below the Stoneman Lake Road. The whitetail population in the unit seems to be stable, with many above average bucks being taken every year.

     

    Areas: Whitetail deer prefer dense chaparral cover and can be very difficult to locate. All the major drainages in the lower half of the unit contain whitetail. One must be careful to properly identify the species before shooting, as both types of deer occupy the area. Plan on spending many hours glassing. Quality optics are a must. Good spotting scopes and binoculars can save you many miles of walking. If you climb to a high point to glass, you need to spend several hours at that location looking for movement. If you intend to drive the roads waiting to see a whitetail, save your gas. This hunt requires a lot of pre-season scouting.

     

    Other Concerns: A Coconino National Forest map is helpful, you can obtain one at any Forest Service office or call (928) 774-1147.

     

    Plan for cold windy conditions; dress in warm, windproof camouflage type clothing. Fire starting materials are essential.
