    Salt licks

Ok now this sounds like something worth trying out. I am going to make a salt like with granulated salt out here near where I hunt in Ajo. There are no other salt licks in the area, there are no cattle in that particular area, and hunters around here dont get that into usiong salt licks. I will place it near a travel route between their bedding and feeding areas. I will do this next weekend so if anyone has any other ideas for me let me know. Also the deer in question are mule deer so dont hang me to bad for that.....hahaha. The coues deer out here are to far out to do any real observing.

    36b 12/16 - 12/31 hunt

I will be there in Oct. also. There are great areas all over that unit. We have hunted down there every year and always tag out. As for the illegals we have only had one run in down there, that was when one stole some of our beer from a cooler one night. Just steer clear of any illegal with backpacks. they usually do what they have to to protect it.

    lions in 36b?

Ok this is will get you guys upset, I know it did to us in camp last week. A good friend of ours was hunting with us in 36B with his son. He killed his buck opening day and on saturday he was out with his son. While they were watching a herd of does and spikes he noticed a large buck that was hiding in some brush acting funny. My buddy said he saw 2 lions in the canyon watching the deer not 100yds from them! When I asked him how many of the cats they killed or got a shot at he said neither. They didnt want to shoot the cats and scare the buck off he said. I dont know about you guys but I will take a cat over a buck any day. Later he realized what he had done. Eric

    opening day

Yep no flashlight in my pack. It was about a mile and a half from the road where I shot him. As for the hit i could hear the bullet hit the deer and see him stumble as he went over the hill with the other buck following. We looked for a day and a half for him with no luck. Believe me I have been doing the should have done this, should have done that routine since friday. Nothing leaves a bigger pain in my stomach than losing an animal. I'm planning to go down later this week to look again for whats left. Maybe the crows will lead me to it. Eric

    opening day

Well it was a great year for our camp. 7 tags filled opening day in 36B. I did not make it down until friday noon so I got a late start. Here is where it gets depressing. I went out for the afternoon hunt and right about sunset I glassed up a huge buck. His horns were sider than his ears with good mass. When I first saw him I thought it was a stump I was looking at then he turned his head. The buck was bedded on top of a ridge in the open. My first shot went right over him but he did not know where it came from when he stood up another buck stood up next to him. My second shot connected and they both went over the hill. We waited until the next morning to find him since it was getting dark and we were on top of the mountains. Well the next day me my brother and two friends went in we started looking for him. and aswe were looking the other buck he was with stood up about 40yds from us but I did not shoot him since we were looking for my deer. Seeing that buck still on the hill but now alone proves to me even more they both stayed on the hill. But after searching saturday and today we could still not locate my buck. Hopefully someone will come across that rack and make their day. Eric

    Favorite Deer Gun

I must agree the 300's are outstanding whitetail guns. I have taken my last 3 coues with my 300 Ultra Mag. But we must all remember that just cause the gun can shoot 400+ yards does not mean the hunter can. I regularly practice shooting from 50yds all the way out to 500yds and I know where that bullet is going at each range. As for knockdown power I killed my elk last year at 522yds. I used a 180gr scirocco and the bullet broke the left shoulder went through both lungs and broke the opposite shoulder he only went 10 steps before falling. Caliber size is fun to talk about but a man that shoots his rifle like an extension of his arm is deadlier than a guy with a big magnum that does not know his gun......................my .02 cent Eric

    New way of hunting discovered!!!!

I had a similar experiance in 36B also a few years back. On the last day of the oct whitetail hunt we were driving to our area at first light when i spotted 2 small bucks bedded 75yds off the road. After 3 days of hiking and glassing it was like a gift from god. Although I had passed on other bucks the previous days there was a storm rolling in, so I got out of the truck, stepped off the road loaded my rifle and proceeded to fill my tag. It was only a small 2x1 buck but he had enough antler to wrap a tag around............lol. That was also the amallest deer I have ever killed. At the G & F checkpoint he weighed in at a whopping 53lbs field dressed.

    36B

I have been hunting 36B for quite a few years now and only had 1 year where i did not fill my tag. The best thing is to get a good vantage point and glass, glass, glass. Especially the canyons high on the mountains, let the other hunters do the work for you as they hike around there. Shoot me an e mail we will be down there in oct. Eric
