Zilch in our camp
-
We were at the Phoenix Zoo this weekend taking the grandkids for a visit to see the animals. We began to discuss why there were no elk in the Arizona exhibit. Then one of my sons made the comment that there were elk in 50% of Arizona so why did we need an exhibit at the zoo. I quickly said absolutely not, maybe 10% of the state had elk in it at any given time. So, if you were to take the state of Arizona and give elk a percentage areas where they are found. What would you give as a percentage? Arizona has approximately 114,000 square miles, so my estimate would claim that approximately 14,000 square miles of Arizona a person could find elk. Course my estimate was off the top of my head in an effort to dis-credit my son on his profound statement about there being elk in 50% of the state. Just a fun question to see what you think would be a good percentage given to the area covered by our elk herds here in Arizona. I am sure G&F has the answer to this question.

We spend alot of time trying to make sure we have the necessary things with us when we are hiking, but AZ can be so extreme it is easy to forget and take precautions. Prayers out for the young man and those looking for him.

You are correct in saying there is a unit 1 youth hunt but it is a draw and not over the counter this year. This was done as a result of the Wallow fire and the hit that turkey in the area took. Hopefully it will be opened back to over the counter in the near future if we get some good years of turkey production to bolster the population. Aaron So are there any over the counter hunts this year for youth???

One of the areas we hiked just north/west of Buffalo Crossing, we dove off to get to the river, we bumped into one tom turkey. Other than that for all the road driving and hiking we did, no turkey. We did see turkey tracks in the snow several times hiking. I am really disappointed we don't get to do the youth over the counter turkey tag this year, my son got hooked big time last year. Dang it...... -

Somebody staking claim to a trick tank. Carcass with a couple of broadheads buried in the backbone. Interesting find. Hiking through some of the burn has a graveyard eerie to it. I hike my old rearend off only to find these tracks cutting through the burn. Frustrating Mulie deer out and about 1:00 middle of the day. Fountain of youth right here in beautiful AZ. -
As I watched the broadcast last night I found myself realizing how little I do personally to "improve" the wildlife habitat. There are alot of non-hunters out there who enjoy the wildlife we have in this state. Church groups, scouts, bird watchers and tree huggers. I pay for tags, license fees and all other required fees dealing with hunting, camping, fishing, hiking. All the things that I enjoy. I leave my campsite clean, I work hard to teach my kids good hunting ethics. I have volunteered time to help with cleanup projects. I personally don't belong to any groups, organizations, lobby groups. No board memebers, no comittee memebers nothing of that sort. Right now my dollars are up for grab(not much), but I want to be sure that who ever I decide to join up with has the same values for this state as I do and I have a surety that my money isn't going into somebody's pocket for personal gain. Personal gain being the difference between making a living and stealing. Sometimes we have to pay people for their time and efforts, I am ok with that. Dumping money into a non-profit program where somebody gets filthy rich, I don't want anything to do with that. One thing that I find interesting is were it not for my addiction to reading hunting stories on this website I would have been clueless about this bill that has been presented. I fall into that catagory spoken of many times last night "average Joe outdoorsman". It was very interesting to see the many different views, I appreciate being able to watch even though I was not there.

I really thought what Bruce brought up was what the meeting was supposed to be about, but like you said, seemed like alot of dancing. Hopefully Mr. Davis will take a look at what wasn't said as well as what was. -

Great resources plus I would think they had seen enough to know what direction this needs to go. Alot of the questions last night presented in the meeting referred to solutions and this is where we need to focus or efforts. Bill and Tony both I would think could have some great influence in this area. -

Plus one here, I can honestly say that if it weren't for this site, I would have heard nothing about this bill. Nothing in the paper, nothing on the news. Much appreciated for your efforts to keep us informed. -
