  3. I would agree on the wolf thing, which again is something that was put into place and now has strings attached. Just read the signs along the side of the road, Mexican wolves are protected by the Endangered Species Act under a special rule which allows people to scare away or harass wolves in an "opportunistic and non-injurous" manner. This means you cannot seek out, pursue, or attract wolves, nor can you phyiscally injure a wolf in any way. However, you can scare a wolf away by making loud noises or by throwing rocks in the animal's direction. I always stop long enough to read the sign for a chuckle, but you are very right about it being part of the underlying wolf protection. Seems to fit the border idea as well........
  4. Would never have equated "old, health or laziness" in your case Bill, and have found in the past that the only hunters, people or otherwise that have rubbed my bald head wrong have been those who were too lazy to show any respect for what we have, especially here in the white mountain area. People too lazy to clean up their camp after they are done. People too lazy to walk across the meadow so they drive across it. People too lazy close the gate that they just opened. People who leave the crappy diaper along the side of the highway. None of which has anything to do with age or health. My point was simply that my perspective is different because I have, as of yet, not reached any of those points in my life and probably can't see past my own nose to know any better. As I stated previously, I don't like the idea of what might be packaged with the road closure. I remember back in the late 70's, we would pack back into the Gila Wilderness with our mules, there were holding corrals at the head of the trail, Gila Cliff Dwellings, we would always take some alfalfa hay with us to feed just before we left, pack a little pellet feed in with us but mostly rely on grass to keep our mules up during the week. We went in one time, signs posted all over that fines would be handed out for any use of foreign feed such as alfalfa, rye, wheat, oats. This was due to the "fact" that new "grasses" were being introduced to the area by the feeds that were being brought in by "horse and mule" parties. I think there is a happy medium, unfortunately it always seems that they keep inching up on us taking more and more away and that is the scary part.

What would you do? (hunting etiquette)

Anymore, planning for the crowds is part of planning the hunt. I have a 3a3c late bull tag coming up, and I have about 5 different areas that we have been scouting just to make sure the bulls are in there. But come opening morning, those bulls will probably not be where they were the day before, so we just have to have plan B, C, D and E. Not exactly the way we want it...but that is the way it is. People can be considerate of others by treating the situation the way they would like it if they were in the same situation...

    november 36b success!!!

Nice job on the 36B hunt, glad to hear you found him and put him down. For some reason your pic isn't coming up on my dang computer, but I'll try on my one at home tonight.
  8. I guess when I am too old or lazy to hike it in I might have a different view and opinion, but I know it is very frustrating to hike into an area, only to find somebody busting through in a vehicle. 27, has some wilderness area in it and is about the only place you can go in that area and actually hunt without being disturbed by vehicles. I guess the part of me that wouldn't support road closure is the part that worries about what is packaged with those closures and what is next on the agenda. They gonna say I can't take my mule in there? Seems like there is always something next.....

whoo hoo-got my 10yr old daughter her class

I have a 3A/3C November bull tag, live right here in the middle of it and would be more than happy to help in any way I can. If it keeps up the heat....there won't be any snow. Most of the roads along the burn area have orange blockades in front of them, a person can get around them, but, they don't want you trying to go out there to recover game. I haven't actually seen it in writing, but have heard from locals that they really are trying to keep people out of that area due to dead trees, so they claim. I have been waiting for the dust to settle from archery, cow hunts etc. to go find out where the bulls have landed. That cow hunt can actually be pretty tough, once they get stirred up, those cows can flat cover the country. Give me a holler if you need any help. Jeff

    Field Judging

So, I am trying to play the game but have no experience on coues whitetail. I'm looking through my binos at a coues, which happens to be looking right at me and his antlers are as wide as his ears. What is the general, field judging measurement for spread? On mulies, I believe the general rule of thumb is 24" spread if it is as wide as the ears.....

How do I do a European mount

I have a local taxidermist that I traded a cape for the beetle job. Which looked tons better than the crappy boil job I did on an earlier attempt.

My Oct Coues buck! Our Oct Coues bucks!

Those 5" bucks are dang good eatin......nice job......
  18. I saw that cat in the zoo a few years back....somebody turned him loose down south, and now look what is happening. Don't worry about the trash, it will just wash down the wash and won't harm a thing.....pretty upside down out there. I hope they didn't spend a whole lot of money figuring out that those cats are "communicating" with each other by pissing on their territory........

    AZ Unit 24A

Azonie, I can relate....I made the misfortune of transposing numbers on my application(possible old age), for my 5th choice, and ended up in 36B. We made one scouting trip, 6 hours one way, that is all we could fit into our schedule, we scouted for deer and campsites as well, which of course both were ellusive, as the opening morning came. If I knew a thing about 24A I would be happy to give you some help. All I have seen of 24A is the drive from Snowflake to Tucson......wicked thick and steeper than....well......perfect coues country from the view from the highway.

    Trashy Wash

Right now during deer season would be a great time for the good reverend to come and visit.....call in assistance from a distance........I'm a little riled over the whole thing....stir the pot, get the ACLU down here, get'm all down here and let them spend the night camping on the side of a wash full of that mess.......course, in the long run it will boil down to us paying the price, not just in the clean-up, but some numbskull will come up with a law prohibiting US citizens from entering that area legally.

    The 36B Experience

Good to hear you guys located a buck, two years ago there was 6" of snow on the ground and gates had all been padlocked to the area we were going into. So we had to hike a mile and a half in the snow just to get to our glassing area. The heat is defintely a tough thing to battle. That area is exciting just because of the "possibility" of a huge buck, any place, any time. Here is the monster that we found Dang it, I'll get the photo up in a bit....@#%$##^&^ computers....

    The 36B Experience

OK, coueswhitetail.com and all readers, here are a few notes from our 36B experience: First, a great big thanks to firstcoueswas80 and out2hunt, they helped me out tremendously with pointers on the area, thanks to both of you for your help. Second, what a beautiful area you have to hunt and enjoy the great outdoors, the morning and evening hours were excellent, hot during the day, but what the heck. Third, where in the H3ll did you get those gigantic grasshoppers from, plus my wife had an 8" centipede just about crawl up her leg. I have a theory on that if nobody has a good answer for me. Fourth, we found deer with minimal preseason scouting, we could have done a much better job in this department but just to far away to be feasible. We had a blast chasing those critters around and we came up empty handed but it wasn't due to lack of effort. Fifth, I was very disappointed in the trash in the wash (Diablo Mt.), took over 200 pics during my mid-day activities and want to send them to every congress, representative, senator, govenor, Pres. of the US........my 10 year old who was hunting with us is very confused about what we saw down there. Left a pretty bitter taste in his mouth as well as mine. Thanks again for sharing your kneck of the woods with us. Jeff
