Hey All, I just came back for the first part of my hunt at CN, I was there for the first 3 days of the hunt it was cool to be there, but didn't see any ELK at all, there were other hunters there too, but didn't see anything either. It was during a full moon so that might have had something to do with the fact we didn't see anything, we drove all over CN and walked a lot too, didn't see anything, we saw lots of mule deer. We hit the ponds early in the morning, midday and at the end of the day no luck, I focused on areas #1 and #2 because it was very muddy, so I didn't make my way all the way south of the unit like I had planned. Going back from the 28th, 29th and 30th, anyone had any luck so far this year at CN??? the guards said that they have not seen anyone pull anything from there in the last 2 or 3 weeks, they said it might be too cold for the ELK??? I don't know where the elk went, spotted lots of mule deer bedding down I'm sure I would have seen the ELK bedded down if they were there. Any tips/recommendations are welcomed.

    antlerless vs Cow

Good morning and thanks for the replies, the reason I'm worried about it is because hearing camp stories...one of my hunting buddies told me that in one of his elk hunts "they" shot a "cow" at about 200 yards and by the time they got to it "she" had like an inch nubs or I guess spikes...supposably they called G&F and they were not fined(cut them a break I guess for the accidental/mistake kill), but were "given the option" to donate the meat to food bank in flagstaff...nice break, but their hunt was ruined...and I'm just trying to be as careful as I can, not expecting/planning to shoot past 250 yards, but just worried about the "nubs".

    antlerless vs Cow

So as I'm approach my COW hunt on 11/11/22, I'm wondering if anyone can help with tips to ID a COW ELK at 200-400 yards as opposed to a antlerless ELK... I'm just worried about mistaking a COW with an male ELK with nubs...don't want to make that mistake...

I wish I knew they were going to do a virtual class, I drove almost 300 miles to attend the course, I just hope I can get in to a field day class so I can meet that requirement and be able to hunt…or I hope they waive that since it is not in anyones hands or do a virtual as well LOL..

AntlerPiss, So in a nutshell, you have to attend the Camp Navajos safety course and have complete Hunter's Ed with field day( if you don't have anyone/another state's Hunters ed.) just to gain access to Camp Navajo and hunt, I'm assuming you have Hunter's Ed for New York, which is great but without both of those requirements(hunters Ed and Camp Navajo's safety course) you can't get thru the door and on to the hunting grounds. So yes, you can have a tag , but can't get in and hunt.

I have not completed the Hunter's Ed Field day due to the lack of classes, is anyone on the same boat? Does anyone knows if the Camp Navajo might waive the field day requirement since there is a backlog on field day classes?

Any pointers for my 2022 Fall hunt (starts 11/11/22), it is COW hunt and will have access to the restricted area...anyone else having the same hunting days willing to team up? I'll do it!!! I think 22 hunters all together will be in Camp Navajo for that hunt/time frame.

This is from their web side: Restricted Area (RA): The restricted area is governed by federal and state regulations and is strictly controlled. Current and former military, are the only hunters eligible to apply for access into the RA. Hunting in the RA is limited to archery only. This area may be closed to hunting due to mission requirements. The area is limited to ten hunts during each scheduled hunt. Refer to Section 3.d. on how to apply for access. As a former Military you qualify for the restricted area(RA).
