For the past 15 years my buddy and I always do a New Year's Day quail hunt. One year, I remember we got up super early grabbed our gear and headed out to 36A off of Sasabe Hwy, got out and instantly heard quail clucking/calling. Gonna be a good day, right. As I grab my gun case and start to pull it out I let out the loudest expletive ever.....it was my 300 win mag. Loaded back up & drove back to Tucson and then proceeded to 37A. Day ended well, as do they all when you are out hunting for whatever.

Due to my sons jr WT hunt in Oct, followed by my cow elk in in Oct I didn't have any time for any pre-scouting for my 36A Muley hunt. I was tickled pink that I received a tag but knew it was going to be a very tough hunt since there were 1200+ combined back to back WT/Muley hunts and hearing that some of the ranches had locked the gates for access into that area. Got up super early and hit the road from camp and made it to spot I had seen mule deer about 3 yrs ago. I know what your thinking, 3 years seems like a long time. Oh well, it's a start. I immediately see some WT across a canyon and start to really focus in the deep ravine. I pull out the 15's and start scanning way off in the distance and notice some pigs. I hear some shots to the east and start glassing that way, I noticed 2 hunters along top of a ridge about 500 yds off. They settle on a rock and start glassing the canyon I am in. I look toward the pigs again and notice the rear end of a mule deer duck into a small ravine. No idea what gender but knew it was a Muley. The two other hunters head toward the recent shots and headed east. I never saw the Muley exit the canyon so I knew it was either bedded or feeding slowly. I pack up and headed that direction. I get to the base of this small hill knowing the ravine is just up the way. As I caress the top, I get behind some mesquites and slowly start looking into the bottom. Nothing, must be bedded. I move along the the top and whamo, a deer pops up and antlers start to shine/glimmer in the sunlight. As most mule deer do, it proceeds to bounce away. I line up and squeeze the trigger, the bullet hits him in the ® front shoulder. He buckles and slows way down, he stops behind an ocotillo and I shoot again, shot above him and he trots off again. Third shot and he goes down. Found out that the shots I heard earlier were from a buddy of mine in the next canyon over. We had a total of 6 tags and we filled 3 opening morning. I was very pleased with the outcome on this late of a hunt.

Thanksgiving day routine, "traditions", and meals on the late hunt?
Shooter McGavin replied to daverp's topic in Elk Hunting
For the past 12 yrs it's been on the beach in Rocky Point. You can't beat rum & cokes during the day watching the tide roll away, having the chitlins run themselves ragged on the beach followed by a traditional style turkey dinner. The cervezas in the morning, rum & cokes in the midday followed by wine and homemade cheese cake in the evening........WOW. I have often thought about applying for late season elk tags the day after Thanksgiving but it's kinda hard to break traditions. As for shooting stuff, we always have the potato gun on hand to shoot at the seagulls, they are just as bad as those nasty pigeons or crows we have. Happy Thanksgiving to all, be safe and if you have tag............fill it!!!!! -

Opening morning 10/17 @ 7:25 AM, unit 27 cow tag filled. Only 3 out of a group of 10 tag holders in our camp were lucky enough to fill tags. It was a great weekend, the bulls were still bugling and it was exciting getting on them to see herds any where from 7 on up to 40 cows with them. The other two guys who filled their tags were first time elk hunters, furthermore it was their first kill ever. The nights were very chilly waking up to frozen water and ice on everything. Dropped off all 3 to Miller's in Springerville, can't wait. Fantastic hunt, now just waiting for my Muley hunt in November.

If you Could Have Just One...

270 WSM, no doubt the best all around, especially the Kimber Classic, very light and oooooooooohhhhhhhh so nice to shoot. -
I remember when I was 14 it was me, my dad, my younger brother and my good friend and his dad went archery hunting in 36B. We got to our camp and noticed my brothers sleeping bag and mine had blown out of the truck. Dad said, let's go to Nogales and pick some up at Kmart or Yellow Front. We get down there and the wind is just howling, he says not the best time to set up camp, we might as well cross the border for lunch and what not. Well being 14 and not knowing what "what not was" we all agreed. Well we ended up on Canal Street, 1st time I had a beer and the 1st time I was approached by a hooker. Needless to say, both dads laughing hysterical and learned the phrase "no gracias" Been going down south to the 36's for years, (pig, deer, quail) tons of illegal sign (trash to make shift huts) but never an issue with illegals. Going down again Nov 14-20 for my Muley hunt in 36A, hopefully an uneventful trip with the illegals. Always carrying my sidearm and long gun. I surely won't go down without a fight. Be safe and keep your eyes open.
