This one spooked me while walking.
Shooter McGavin replied to ready2hunt's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
Good looking critter, if I remember correctly you can only shoot one per year unless the rules have changed. -
Can you send me pic please?

Needless to say I did not get drawn for elk, poor me. I even tried for the remaining left over tags and still didn't get drawn, still poor me. There are a hand full for unit 1 (limited opportunity archery) for first come first serve on Monday the 30th. I really want to go, but I know nothing about the areas (Flat Top Mountain and Coon Canyon). Is it a waste of my time and $121.50 to even go to these areas to try and arrow an elk. I know any bad of hunting is better than working, but I need some help and maybe a kick in the butt in the right direction. Thanks guys.

I just purchased a topo map for these two areas just to see what to expect on terrain, roads, etc..., are there any areas in and around Flat Top for camping? Is there a lot of private property in and around? Any roads leading to this area or will I be hiking 2-3 miles just to get to any forest/tree lines. What type of vegitation is up there, pine trees, junipers? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I appreciate all the feed back guys, I haven't found one yet still looking. Hoping Uncle Sam is as generous as I was when it comes to dishing out money.

Desert Archers 3D Shoot This Weekend
Shooter McGavin replied to Siwash's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Went out there today with my 8 yr old boy and had a blast. We did both courses and kept score. I was shooting my new (at least new to me)PSE Mach X and my boy was shooting his recurve. The distances were anywhere from 20 yds to 44 yds, the boy pretty much stayed around the 20 yd distance the whole time and absolutely loved it. I did end up losing one arrow, not happy about that one bit, but still enjoyed the company of my son and the beautiful weather. My son thoroughly enjoyed two of the 30 targets that we shot at. One was a stegasauras dinosaur and the other was a baboon monkey, he thought it was a kick in the butt to shoot at 2 creatures that don't belong in the Az desert. Can't wait to do it again. -
Best choice for hunting/field sidearm

I take out my Springfiled XD 40 cal for my deer/elk hunts, my FNP 9 mm for my pig hunts and my Walther P22 for my quail hunts. I absolutely love the XD though, but all of them shoot really well. -
1st off I want to give a BIG thanks to Amanda, I finally got the Covert II up and running as well as properly getting it installed in the lockbox. I absolutely love this camera/set up. I installed about 1 1/2 months ago and was just itching to see what was on film so I made the hike out to THE SPOT and swapped out memory cards yesterday. While changing out the cards and getting situated, I happened to look down under the tree I had the camera fixed to and noticed a black with yellow striped snake, I thought how cool a California King Snake, but then noticed the triangle viper shaped head. Well, needless to say it died a horrible death because it never rattled and let itself beknown. I have to say it was going to die anyway whether it rattled or not, I just didn't like it being this close to me or where I was going to be in the future. Made it home and started to download pics, only one deer (small WT doe) and these pics of the cat. Kinda cool I think. The date unfortunaley is off, but that can be fixed the next time I wanna take a hike.

November 2005- I killed my first muledeer down south and brought it to an eastside location for processing. I thought why not, it was close to home and I had never been there before. The first thing I noticed when I brought my deer in and they opened up the freezer is that there were at least 7-8 deer hanging and at least 5-6 deer laying on the freezer floor. I questioned that and the yound guy said they were rearranging things inside to make room for more deer. I don't know if I liked that answer but how was I to know for sure and he placed my deer ontop of the other deer on the floor. I gave him my requirements and left. About two weeks later I received my deer and was very happy to start chowing down. I have eaten deer before, but there was something that just didn't taste right. My wife wouldn't eat anymore of this deer, but I felt obligated after all the time and effort I put in to get it. Bad experience with this place, have NEVER gone back to get anything processed from them again. LATE OCTOBER 2011-I had a very good friends son take a mule deer on this years 1st jr hunt on the 2nd to last day of the hunt. They cut the deer up out in the field and brought back all the good stuff. They were both pressed for time, he had to get to work and his boy had to get to school. I had told them to call me if they should fill their tag so that I could give them directions to WGP. Well needless to say they dropped it off at an eastside location. I won't throw at the name, but lets just say it is in Broadway/Camino Seco area. They got the meat back and gave me some burger and steaks, VERY nice friends to have. That night I was in a hurry to try some venison, since my last years deer was already gone and my hunt wasn't in two weeks and I couldn't wait. So I put a nice marinade on it and grilled it up. While eating, all three of my kids and wife all found traces of hair. I told them it happens from time to time, a little disappointed I called my buddy and told him what we found and to becareful prior to eating. TODAY-11/17/2011 I just got done thawing some more steaks my buddy gave me for a cookout tomorrow at work. I remembered what we found on the previous steaks and decided to thoroughly inspect each cut prior to marinading. Once again I was completely blown away by how much deer hair, pieces of dirt and sticks/dry grass stuck in and around the cuts and layers of meat. Just gross I tell, it would have probably gagged a maggot on a gut wagon, but I washed each piece of meat and stuck it into the baggy of marinade anyway. What really upsets me is that I don't know if I want to eat the burgers. Who knows what will be mixed in it. Very frustrated hunter; all the time you put in just preparing for the hunt (scouting, buying new gadgets & food, sleepless nights); your hunt arrives and the endless miles and effort you put in to tag your deer and then to have your meat BUTCHERED by someone who doesn't care or wants to take the time to process & clean it correctly. All 6 cuts had hair and pieces of grass/dirt on them, I only took pics of this one.

VERY DISAPPOINTED AND RATHER DISGUSTED
Shooter McGavin replied to Shooter McGavin's topic in The Campfire
Every animal I have shot I have gutted out in the field, drug or caried back to camp with cape on. Took some pics and immediately started removing the hide. Stuck some blocks of ice in the cavity, slid my game bag over the carcass to keep the bugs off and keep the ice from sliding out and drove to WGP, with the exception of once going to Dickman's. If everyone rereads this post I was venting/complaining for a friend of mine that took HIS deer to someone other than WGP. Some day I would love to start butchering my own kills, until then WGP everytime. Hands down THE BEST, keep it up John. 1rst mistake is gutting it! Why do you gut a deer? Is there anything in them gut's that you want???? Cool video on watching the gutless video, not ready for that yet. Tomato, Tamato......I guess everyone is different. That is what makes the world go around. -

Glassing is the key, if you can't see it you are not going to shoot at it. A good tip that I was told many many years ago to do is to train my eyes to look for movement (with and without binos). When your outside enjoying the great days/evenings of what this lovely state has to offer look into trees for chirping birds and see if you can spot them moving inbetween the tree limbs and if you are at the park and you find yourself sitting in some grass look for ants moving among the blades of grass, I know it sounds korny but it will train your eyes to focus on just the smallest slightest movement. Just my 2 cents, oh yeah shoot straight.

I have been out of the archery scene for about 12 years now. I sold my old PSE bow (old dinosaur type) and now I am in the market to get a new one. I am just getting my 8 yr boy into it now and he loves it, so with that being said I went to PSE and was measured and found out I need at least 30 1/2-31" draw. Anybody out there looking to sell a 31" draw with 60-70#. Preferrably a newer style bow, 2-4 years old. Let me know what's out there. Thanks in advance.
