What's the craziest thing you have done while out hunting?
Shooter McGavin replied to AZ_SAWBUCK's topic in The Campfire
I caught a 6' gopher snake while dove hunting. I knew my buddy hated snakes so I stuffed it into his soft style gun case and just waited until he came back. He approached his jeep and asked if I had got anything and I said no, he replied me neither. I walked up to the side of his CJ-7 and waited. As he unzipped the case and flung the case open that friggin snake shot out of ther like a cannon right at him. I nearly dropped my shotgun laughing so hard and he denies it but the whole way home I swear I smelled something, and it wasn't a baby ruth. -
Price reduction on both items.

What's the craziest thing you have done while out hunting?
Shooter McGavin replied to AZ_SAWBUCK's topic in The Campfire
Maybe not crazy back then but now it might be a little. We had archery deer tags in 36B in 1984, my father, my brother (12 yrs) I was 14 and my best friend (14 yrs) and his father all went down to do some archery hunting down south. We started to set up camp and noticed 2 of our sleeping bags didn't make the trip, blew out on 1-19 somewhere. Oh well Nogales wasn't too far my dad said. We set up camp and then the wind started to howl, it actually blew over our buddies tent. My father said screw it, today will be a miserable day to hunt let's go to Nogales and pick up some new sleeping bags. Well by the time we got to Nogi, the two dads had convinced us to go across the border for some good ole mexican food and whatever. Well after we ate we wound up at a place on Canal Street, literally there was water running down the street hence the name. We go into this dark building and all cram into a booth. My father asks us what we want to drink and this is where I had my first beer. I forget what brand it was, but I can tell you I liked it, but what showed up next was the ugliest, not a tooth in her grill Senorita that I had ever seen. I really had no comparison but she was skanky. She asked us something in spanish and both fathers just laughed and said no gracias. We all had 1 more beer while the dads just snickered. We finished up and went back to camp, wind never let up all day and through the next, tags wern't filled but what a memory it was. Gotta love dads..... -

Back on 10/11/13 I posted my boys 1st javi and told him that he should set a goal for getting all AZ BIG 10 Game in AZ before the age of 20, well today he is at 8 just like he said. Due to a school field trip yesterday and me having to work all day we couldn't be out there on opening day. We also couldn't get him a JR deer hunt tag because he hadn't passed the AZGF Field Day prior to the first draw, I was fine with that but I knew it wasn't going to be easy so we had to settle for a leftover general deer tag. I was really bummed knowing that in 36B with 800 tags there was going to be a lot of activity and being the 2nd hunt made it even tougher. We got up at 2:30 packed some grub and rifles and headed out. The whole drive down there all I am thinking about is getting to our glassing point and looking for deer. We finally park the truck and start walking in the dark, I tell Jake right now our only enemy is the sun, we need to beat the sun. We finally get to our spot at 6:15. I told him to start glassing the big hill to our north and I was going to glass the deep canyon to our south. He is still getting use to the whole glassing thing, so I told him to pick apart the mountain as if it were a giant grid. Inspect the whole mountain up and down and then go from side to side, do it twice. I told him for every doe he spots he gets a $1.00 and for every buck $5.00. A little incentive. Well at 7:00 AM I spot a small buck (spike), which was bedded down. I tell Jake I got antlers, ranged him at 272 yds. You want em, I asked. He said no I am still looking for deer. I smiled and said good job. I turned and focused on the large hill to help him out and from time to time just peeked over at the spike just to see if he had moved at all. We sat there for another 55 minutes glassing, nothing turned up on the big hill. I asked him if he wanted to climb the big hill to look for more deer on the other side, I had told him that I had seen and actually took some shots at some during my hunt. I then asked him, size doesn't matter with these deer. Just actually finding a buck and getting a shot off is half the battle. Each deer is unique in its on way, just like every hunt will have lasting memories. He looked at me and said, I want to see if I can put a tag on this deer. At that distance I said go ahead and use my gun. I took it to the range and had it dialed in at 300, so I knew it wasn't going to be an issue. He extended the bipod, got in a sitting position and said I got it in the scope. I told him to take some deep breaths and practice squeezing the trigger. Safety on of course. He said he was ready, so he flipped the safety off. I told him to just squeeze the trigger and once the shot goes off put another shell in the chamber, I'll watch the deer for him. It seemed like 5 minutes had gone by so I looked over at him and he was shaking and breathing very hard. He stated that his heart was racing and the scope was all over the place, I told him to put the safety on and take some deep breaths (combat breathing). He did and said he was ready, he got back on target and squeezed the trigger. The buck rolled over and slid down the hill about 10'. I said nice shot, high fives and knuckle punches all around. Well the canyon was very steep and nasty, it took us roughly an hour to get to the other side. Took some pics and told him now the fun begins. We both took turns cleaning it. I drug it down into the ravine and about 1/2 way through the nasty crap. He took over and got it back to the truck. While driving home he said what can I get from the butcher, I just happened to have a receipt/order form from WGP and I said make your list. Can't wait for those tasty snack sticks. Got home, unloaded everything and just prior to putting everything away he said, "dad I want to shoot a really big mule deer", I said that makes two of us. To be continued.........next year.

People have been baiting game since biblical times. So the "old school way" you speak of is a dream. You make me laugh......but I am assuming you are talking about how Eve lured (baited) Adam with the apple or is that how Noah got all the animals on the Ark.

It is called hunting for a reason, not baiting and waiting. The hunters mid west and back east are all jokes. Get out there and kick some sticks, enjoy the great outdoors. Do it the old school way, get out of your vehicle, get your fat a$$ off your OHV's and hike, hike and hike. This country is getting lazier and fatter each day.

Shooter McGavin replied to PelaPapas's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing

I have always carried my rifle with a buddy & now my son who is hunting after I have tagged my big game for three reasons: (A) I always have a lion tag ( we almost always hunt down south, I would rather be in a gun fight with a long gun than not...enough said © my buddies are clumsy and I would hate for them to fall and knock there scope out of whack and not know if there gun is sighted

Quail Close to Flagstaff?
Shooter McGavin replied to IA Born's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I ran into a decent covey elk hunting just north of Williams past Three Sisters mountain range in the flats by the train tracks, scared the beejesus out of me. -
At age 10, my boy shot and killed his first javelina with his Weatherby 270 Win on Oct 11, then he shot my Kimber 270 WSM on Nov 9 and killed his first WT deer. I hope he doesn't think we are trading any time soon.

Opening morning shot at 4 different bucks, all will live freely to roam the hills again. I was so disappointed with my shooting ability I blamed my trusty Kimber 270WSM and put it back in the case and pulled out my Rem 7MM mag to hopefully seal the deal. Well the evening hunt was just a nice long hike. Oh well, I new Saturday was another day. Woke up early only to see doe after doe. Came back to camp frustrated. After lunch decided to have a little target practice with the guys at camp, they broke out there trusty little 22 and I had my 17HMR. We played all kinds of shooting games until the clouds rolled in and temperature was starting to drop a bit. With the 2 hours of practice I new I was ready to fill my tag. I new I wasn't going to fulfill my tag in camp so I loaded up and drove away. I drove roughly 1/2 mile from camp, parked and headed around a hill. I started glassing and immediatly saw 2 bucks. I ranged them at 195. They both were feeding away so I got low and kinda scooted and crawled within 171 yds. Set up my bi-pod and squeezed the trigger. Buck down. I watched the other buck look around and slowly walk off, if only one of my buddies were around to fill their tag. All in all, it was a great hunt. I was the only one to fill a tag out of 7 guys. My boy has this hunt Nov 8, so I know where I am taking him so that he may get the pleasure of filling his tag as well. Story and pics of his hunt in 3 weeks...stay tuned.
