Went out on a afternoon hunt with my nephew. Shot this buck at 12:30 in his bed. Not bad for a fifteen minute hunt. 97 and change Brent

What bullet for a 300 wsm
cohofishing replied to lionhunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Hi, I bought a winchester model 70 in a 300wsm. The gun doesn't seem to like much. I tried loads with almost all the "good" bullets and ended up finding it likes 165 speer bt's. I got caught up in all the hype and was worried that speer was't good enough; but my dad reminded me how many sikta blacktails we have shot in the last thirty years in Alaska and alot of them were shot with speer or hornady's. Long story short, 186 yards, one shot high shoulder, and my three point dropped in it's tracks. Complete pass thru with no more damage than the Nosler Accubonds I shoot in my 300 win mag. I guess my point is use what ever the gun shoots best. A well placed shot will kill almost anything. 66gr IMR 4350, CCI 250 Brent 250 -
It was 230 am on Sunday, October 12, and we were finally leaving the house to go on my deer hunt. That what my dad kept saying, over and over. He had been going nuts since Friday. I would not take the day off from school because I did not like idea of having to make everything up. And Saturday, we were hit with the tail end of a hurricane. So, Sunday it was. We drove to the spot and waited for the sun to come up. We had our tripods and binos ready to go. We were not glassing for more than a half hour, when my dad said he saw a buck and away we went. My dad is much better at glassing then I am, but I did try most of the time. We were able to get 260 yards from this three point before I finally got to see him in my glass. Is that “Booner”, I asked? I really wanted to get “Booner” and nothing else even though it was my first hunt. It was not, but we decided it could be ”Booner jr”. While we were looking for a rest, the buck had enough and away he went. We looked at many deer that day, but never were able to make it happen. Later that day we say two, three points and a two point but I just could not get them in on my scope because the sun was going down in my eyes. That night, we set up camp in the dark. I named the campsite “the owl’s nest” because of all the owls hooting. That was the best camping spot I had ever camp at except for all the dead animal parts left by the owls. That night it was cold. Wednesday, I finally got to see “Booner” and missed him at 290 yards. “Booner” was the buck my dad had been hunting all August with his bow. When I looked at him though the spotting scope, even I knew he was big. I was so excited that I was going to get “booner”. I think it was buck fever. I was not too happy after I missed him. However, my dad kept encouraging me to stay positive. Later that day, we checked my gun back at camp. I put three shots in an inch group off my bipod at 100 yards. Thursday came. The last day and the wind was howling. We glassed and glassed. We finally glassed up the two three points we had seen the first day. I thought they were brothers. We decided to go after them in their bed. As we were hiking in a big circle to get down wind from “booner jr, jr.”, my dad stopped me in my tracks. He had been glassing each little canyon on the lee side of the wind looking for bedded deer. He had found one. I started to get really excited. I said “is it a buck, is it!” The deer was bedded under a mesquite tree and we could not see his head. After a few minutes of looking at him through the spotting scope, my dad said it was a buck and we starting crawling. My dad was pulling out shin jiggers out by their roots so I could crawl to this one mesquite tree. Dad ranged the buck at 88 yards. I looked under every tree but I could not find him in my scope. Finally, I could see him. I could not see his horns but I was glad because I did not want to get too excited. My dad asked me if I was on it. In addition, I asked where exactly do I aim because I did not want to miss. He drew it out on the ground. I picked up my gun, aimed, and pulled the trigger. I asked did I hit him. My dad said I think so and I think he might be “Booner”. Then I got really excited. The deer had up walked up the mountain a little bit and then fell to the ground. I had hit him right in the lungs. Few minutes latter, I was looking at my first deer. Not a booner, but certainly a booner, jr. A four by four non-typical with eye guards. I shot him with my own reloads and the 95 grain noslers had done the job. I was so happy I did not know what to do. We gutted and boned him out. I am not sure who was smiling more, my dad or me; but I was really happy. It had been a great five days with my dad. I could not have asked for a better fall break. When is the next deer hunt?

Hi, My daughter took her first deer using a 243 win, with 95 gr bullets. I believe my son shot three deer years ago using the same gun with remington factory 100 gr bullets. No problems. Brent

Hi, Has anyone heard if the process is over? Everytime I call I get the same answer from Fish and game. They keep saying " a couple more weeks ". I have a friend who already got his leftover in the mail! It's my wife who's got her fingers crossed. Also, how about money back from Fish and game? I still looking for about $350.00. Brent

Hi, I was wondering if the gun was still for sale? Are you here in Tucson? Brent
-
Okay, I got to ask. How do we know that there are radios involved with his bowhunting? I did read an interview about the chute plane being used in a Arizona strip Riflehunt, which he was bowhunting; but everytime? Paying people to find the deer? Where did this stuff come from? I have never met the guy, but have always like reading what he writes. The story he wrote about the big velvet mulie a couple years ago is one of my favorites and I reread often. I wish I had that kind of patience when it comes to my bowhunts. As far as record books go, Chuck Adams was pressured into entering his animals and then They didn't believe him. So who cares? Dr. Randy Ulmer probally puts more effort and time into hunting then most of us. He is probally a better shot and probally has more experience than most of us. Thirty years I believe I read somewhere. These add up to big deer. Brent

Hi, Here's the deal, I've already starting loading for my new 300 wsm, but the problem is everytime I go to sportsman's; they never have any new books. All my books are to old to have 300 wsm, and I have gotten all I can find off of the internet. If anyone has a new book for speer or nosler, I'm looking for info on 150 gr and 165 gr in the IMR 4350, IMR 4831 and RL 22. I need min and max loads with primer's. Thanks, Brent

Yes, I was able to look it up on the internet. I'm trying to find some info out of a book. I have one on order but it is not here yet. Nosler only put the barebone stuff on the web. Thanks Brent

Hi, Just bought the wincherster model 70, 300 wsm, stainless. Great looking gun. Anyone else own one? Haven't shot it yet, and I'm wondering what anyone else thinks. I sure like the size and if it shoots, it's going to replace my browning A-bolt 300 win mag for my coues gun. Brent
