    Lion on trail

    Lion on trail

That time is correct and surprised the heck out of me. We were scouting for bears and got excited when I thought there may be a chance at him during the day. That is the only pic I got of him in the day. A lot at night pics and a couple right at the last few minutes of light.

    Treestands

I use both, really depends on the spot and situation. If you have the right tree stand they can be quiet and great. The ones with the expaned metal on the platform can creek and pop, as long as you seat the stand properly it should'nt really be making much noise against the tree. Ground blinds are great because you have a lot of room, use a big comfy camp chair and easily sit all day. The prob is you just get too comfortable and want to go to sleep. I still prefer to spot and stalk if I can, or even still hunt.

    Need taxidermist for Turkey

I have a buddy that killed a nice Tom in the fall hunt. Does anybody know a taxidermist that does great work and is proven for Turkey? He is wanting to get it in a full strut pose if that helps.
  5. I am selling my 1998 grey Dodge 4x4 with A.R.E. camper shell and big sweet roof rack. I will sell my shell and rack separately if needed. This is my hunting truck and bought it with the intention of zolotoning it (a very durable textured type trunk paint) so I could have cared less what it looked like at the time. I had planned on lifting w/ 35"'s, lockers front/rear, big winch, swing out tailgate arm w/ tire carrier and gas tank holders. Well money didn't allow so I need to sell 1 of my trucks. These Dodges off road like no other truck I have been in. My buddy has a 1997 single cab with posi on rear, 33" tires and that thing will go anywhere. It is BAD! This is the reason I bought this for my project truck. Asking 5,200.00 for all. Truck has approx. 108,000 Mi. The passenger rear fender was damaged due to a blow out coming home from the Kaibab scouting for an archery hunt. It is cosmetic and since my beater truck I didn't bother to fix. Other than this the body is straight. It does have the classic Dodge paint fade which they all should have been recalled for. The truck has the large 5.9 V-8 and runs very strong. Super cold A/C. Tranny rebuilt, new power steering pump, gearbox, dampner, high pressure lines, water pump, cooling system recently flushed, front/rear brakes, rear master cylinder, all new tires. Truck has auto tranny, a/c, cruise, pdl, pw, power seats, tow package, 4 wheel drive, Needs new shocks Interior in pretty good shape. The roof rack is big and sweet. It is a Mega Warrior with center rack extension, held on by a Yak Rak and towers, axe/shovel holder, Hi lift jack, carrirer, spare tire carrier, locking brackets, 2 light brackets for k/c type lights (enough for 4 lights) and a stretch net for rack. Paid over 1,500 for shell and rack + accs. I beleive the salesperson said that it will hold 500 lbs. + I have climbed on the rack several times and very strong. Will sell shell and rack + accs. for $700.00. If you need one or the other we can talk. 623-910-3753 I bought the shell used at Tom's and the rack w/ accs new.

    Broadheads for elk?

First off congratulations on the draw!!! I wanted to get drawn sooo bad myself this year and really need another Elk fix! I got zilch and am bummed. Second off thank you for choosing a fixed blade for Elk! I have shot a lot of broadheads and the ones that flew the best for me were the G-5 Montecs, but were very noisy and not that sharp out of the package. "It sounded like a Scud missle flying down range" as one guy said that was in a treestand about 600 - 800 + yards away when I shot at a deer in Illinois 2 years ago. That deer had time to duck back up, and turn. Still hit it and was a kill (luckily) but was not at all where the arrow was headed. I have video of a shot on my 05 Bull Elk that started to jump my arrow at 47 yards, and a few witnesses for those of you that say a broadhead can't be noisy. My bow is very quiet, but that loud whistle as it gets closer and closer to an animal screaming at them was just too much for them to bear. I have had at least three animals jump my broadhead, before I finally changed, and do not have this problem now with evreything exactly the same except for the broadhead. I had a hunting partner shooting the same broadhead, a different bow, weight, draw, and arrow and he still had the same problem so I know it wasn't just me. I now shoot the G-5 Strikers and love them. They are cut on contact, very sharp (the heads and blades) and seem very consistant. Cabelas has a brand that are very similar but are copper colored and less expensive, but the blades are not that sharp out of the package. I have been meaning to check em out but consistancy and quietness are very important to me so I have not bothered yet. I also like the 4 blade Slick Tricks, and wackems. You'll get a ton of different opinions here and most everyone's answer will differ, but provided your bow is tuned very well, then you should be able to shoot about any fixed blade broadhead with consistancy and accuracy, broadheads exaggerate a bow not tuned well and that is when you see that you have a problem. Just do yourself and the Elk a favor and make sure they are Razor sharp, or at least ones that you sharpen to razor sharpness B-4 you use them on an animal as magnificent as an AZ Elk. Good luck on your hunt and I am truly jealous.
  8. ******Items moved, no longer for sale here***************** Ok I have 2 Black Widows for sale. I will probably regret this later but here goes.... Local pick up only for now, will try to keep in AZ, will try to sell here for a week or so then probably off to the the BAY, maybe a trad site. Both bows are a 9 out of 10. TFV (IRONWOOD) 60" 57lbs @28" Tillered for split finger, bow in great shape. Has name on bow. Bow was made on 06-04, Super smooth and a FAST shooter. $650.00 LX T/D in Bocote 66" 55lbs @ 30" has name on bow tillered for split finger. Bow made in 5-03. Has extra string and a navajo take down sleeve with bow. Bow is super accurate and shoots where you point. Highly figured and a treat to look at. Grain is beautiful. $750.00 I will try to post pics up tomorrow evening. I will be out of town this weekend so I won't be able to show bow until Monday. If you are looking at this you more than likely know what the bows are worth and the quality, so please be fair and don't try to lowball. I don't think I'll have to worry about it too much here, but other sites can be ridiculous. No trades please, I really need to just sell. The ONLY trade I would even be tempted by is a 3 piece Thunderhorn Longbow takedown with a stipple grip and some good lookin exotics in a 60-64" around 52-60lbs. Anything else don't bother asking. Thank you.

    Nikon D80 with 2 lens

KIller price dude, I shoot a Nikon D200 W/ a few different lenses and also had a D80 Before that, and have really been wanting an SB600 or 800. Let me know if it doesn't work out and you'd trade the flash for something hunting/archery.

    spring turkey

I have not noticed any accuracy difference with my bow well tuned. Hopefully there was no confusion, when I said slow the arrow, I meant slow the arrow upon impact not during the flight of the arrow. It will add a little extra weight to the arrow so make sure you are sighted in for the extra weight.

    spring turkey

The biggest cutting diameter you can find! I use the Vortex 2 1/2" expandables. Use a turkey stopper too if you can, this will help slow the arrow and keep it in him leading to a higher recovery rate.

What type of drop away rest!

My 1st choice of all that I have shot would be the NAP smart rest. I have used and shot quite a few. It is on sale here for 69.99. 2nd choice would be the trophy taker regualy arm, I have 1 of ea. of these on different bows. The Smart rest is super micro adjustable and easy. With the smart rest I do not use an arrow guide on the front, the big vee picks up my arrow every time. Vee is plastic so it is much quieter at the shot. LOVE MINE!!! http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/template...rset=ISO-8859-1

    Flu Flu's

I do and they are an absolute blast!!!!! Big old bright feathers with a judo tip and a turkey stopper are killers!!!! I have blead rabbits dry with this combonation. They are awsome for shooting at squirrels in trees, rabbits, or anything else. They loose speed after about thiry yards and have to compensate pin wise but I very rarely loose them when shooting this combination. I use to always have one in my quiver just incase. I reccomend using the toughest arrow you can find since it will be your abuse arrow. Maybe a 7595 or an Easton Axis. Be carful though..... you'll be hooked for sure. When camping we'd take frisbees and have an ariel contest. They only fly 150 yards at a steep angle. Have fun and make some up.
  15. I was out hunting Sunday and glassed up an ok 4 point mulie. I decided what the heck and went after him. It was late in the evening and getting close to the last of the legal shooting light. Popped over the hill and had them silouetted. Ranged him and shot. As I shot he turned slowly to his right and took a small half step, making my arrow hit him at a severe quartaring away shot. I hit just behind the front leg. I waited 30 minutes and started on the trail to see how much blood. There was a lot of blood so I pursued. Wound up jumping him so I backed off for an hour. Got after the trail again and a TON of blood, I thought I'd see him any second so I kept going. Got to the bottom of the wash and heard something bust again. At this point I had no choice to leave him over night. It was around 7:30 at this point. I went home and came back at daylight. I trailed the blood and finally found him. I did not find him and get him gutted till aboout noon. Did not get him back to the truck quartered and back to the truck till about 4:00 and not even home and on ice till about 6 or 7 pm. The meat did not smell bad. While taking off the backstraps they seemed more to just pull and shread off. Bottom line, how do I tell if meat is still good? It does not smell bad but the hide stayed on for about approx 15 hours, I am assuming he expired right after the last time I heard him jump out. I thought I heard him fall or kicking after he ran off and was a few hundred yards from where he busted. The temperature was probably about 40* overnight.

Did my deer meat go bad?

Ernetesto that is funny! Probably true for most but I have an iron gut. I'll eat week and a half old leftovers, love my meat so bloody it still moo's, I eat raw sushi, oysters, clams. I'll throw my Javelina meat right on the foreman with just a little seasoned salt. I honestly won't get sick unless it is actually bad. I will eat and enjoy the meat, I can't phyche myself out like that even if I wanted to..... Thank goodness. NRS it actually went throught the ribcage splitting a rib and came out just above the brisket, windpipe area. May have just been an artery but I believe I nicked the close lung. I had some bubbles in the blood and on my arrow. That is an excellent point about the meat aging.

Did my deer meat go bad?

I had given it about 30 minutes intially before I went over the hill. There was so much blood I figured it'd be dead for sure. After I jumped him I did give him another hour. The last time I jumped him it had been approx 1 hr 45 minutes since the shot and a ton of blood. I felt backing out for the night was the best option at that point to make sure he didn't jump again and couldn't afford the chance of loosing him. From here out I will give it an hour even if I know it was a perefect shot, I learned a very valuable lesson. At the last place I lost him the blood trail just stopped. Man I was upset! I did reference the direction I heard him run so I started to look for overturned rocks and tracks. I identified fresh track and which way the dirt was kicked up. I took a square of toilet paper at a time and tracked the drops as I saw them and made a toilet paper trail with a rock on each square. Took me about 3 1/2 hours to find this thing but it worked out, not ideally though. The meat was cool as I took the hide off. I have it in my ice chest now and will start butchering and freezing tonight and tomorrow. If I get sick when I eat the meat then I guess it went bad, but hope it is still good. Thank you Hammy for the info and the number. Sounds like if your meat was fine in those temps then I should have no problem. Thanks to everyone else for the reassurance. I feel much better!

    Traditional Archery

I got into traditional archery a few years ago and love it. Have a few Widows (recurves and a longbow) and a few others. My primary goto is my Thunderhorn longbow that I absolutely love. Took a pig in 2008 and another this last weekend for 2009. Had an opportunity to go after a nice 3 point mulie the weekend before last but chickened out last minute and grabbed my compound and started my stalk. Put an hour stalk and popped over the hill and he was looking directly at me. Range finder was picking up grass and trees in front and behind, bottom line I guessed the wrong yardage and shot just under. I feel if I would have had my longbow and not have punked out I would have been successful, but now I'll never know... Three days later and after a 2 1/2 hour stalk on a nice 3 point whitetail approx 95" the same thing..... couldn't get an exact yardage and shooting steep down hill shot just over his back. I feel I could have made that with the longbow as well. I hope I can get the courage to take my longbow this weekend, but also really want to kill.

    Bogen 701 vs 3130 heads

I really love my Manfroto/Bogen 701rc2. I use it W/ my 15 Swaro's and my 80mm spotter. I have 5 extra quick detach plates and keep one on everything that goes in. Spotter, Bino's, video cam, cam, and one extra for anything else. It has the slide to balance and center the weight so it works great, even for a spotter. I like the looks of the 701 HDV and would get it if it had the same interchangeagble quick detach plates so I'll get another 710rc2 for my 2nd tripod. I guess the hdv is a "true fluid head" making it smoother, even though the rc2 is very fluid in my opinion.
  21. I really hate to ask these questions as I cringe everytime someone else asks for a spot or honey hole, but it is a Res. hunt and Javelina so may not be that big of a secret. A buddy and I got Javelina tags for the Apache Res. in 2009. We have seen a group of pigs at the ten of Diamonds, around the pump station, and Point of Pines. But only once each. Was wondering what areas we should be looking in and concentrating on? These seem a bit high elevation, although we have seen pigs there I assume lower towards Eagle creek and the boundaries may be better? Have not had much time to scout as I have been concentrating on whitetail on public land this year closer to the 24B area. Any advice and direction is greatly appreciated. I will be after them with either my black powder revolver pistol Pietta 1858 New Army .451 , Thompson Patriot single shot .45 cal black powder, Thompson Flintlock .50 cal, or longbow..... I am sill undecided which one, but very excited for more of a primitive powder approach this coming year. If I am lucky enough to take one in Jan. on public land w/ my longbow on my archery hunt I will definitely be using 1 of the 1st 3 mentioned. Thank you all in advance for your help!
  22. Got a wild hair and decided to head up to the Chiricahua's for three days or so for the Christmas vacation. Been probably at least 15 years if not longer since I have been there, if not longer. I never had any problems where we were at or really knew of the illegal traffic while growing up. I have heard it is bad in places. I am wondering just how safe it is, and how bad the illegal/drug traffic is. I don't want any problems and would hate to run into trouble just because I want to chase some whitetail around with my bow. Are there places I should avoid? I will definitely pack my sidearm just incase. It is a shame what the southern hunting units have become when a hunter has to fear this crap! Thanks all.

Javelina Reservation tag unit C question, Apache Res.

Yeah, from R100 up to Black River I believe. Right on .270 thank you for the info. Will have to check out those areas. I appreciate the area's and the tip.
