Just up camping/scouting.......I still love that place even though it's not what it used to be. I arrowed a desert buck in January, so only another point this year. However, I may return to the Bab' next year. Colorado this year....again. Oh I'll never give up on her.......it's too magical a place and it has been too kind to me over the years. Congrats on this child, my friend......my last one (daughter) is heading off to college (Wyoming) in two weeks......so just my wife and I again. Perhaps when I retire in three years we'll both be up on the plateau once again.

I scouted it over the July 4th weekend......feed looked okay, probably much greener now with a months rainfall. Saw a few good bucks and quite a few medium sized bucks (135-150" type).....two mega bucks.

Canille: Glad it helped....good luck up there. Let us all know how it goes.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. Just to clarify some things, I would have sent an arrow his way in a heartbeat if I would have had a valid tag, but I arrowed a mule deer a few days before and was waiting for January 1st to hunt again. Thought I'd sit at this water hole to see what was coming in and do a bit of scouting......and BAAM here's what came in. For this ol' bowhunter, this buck would have been a bow and arrow trophy of a lifetime. After the photo was taken, my hunting buddies asked me what I thought he'd score. I estimated him to net near the 102-105" range, based on the time I had to study him in my binos and quickly calculate some measurements. But, I wanted to share it with you folks and get your take as well.......to make sure I wasn't over/under estimating him. I let my hunting partner (who's never arrowed a Coues) sit this hole for several days and he never appeared again, as he was on the prowl looking for does. Hopefully, I will have another encounter with him next year and I'll have an un-punched tag in my pocket.

real field tip to broadhead shooting alignment

I've taken several elk and countless deer, hogs, and predators with Wac'em Triton heads........NEVER an issue. -
Perhaps this short video message will convey the message by the original poster.........which I wholeheartedly agree with in terms of extreme range shooting.

How many animals have you harvested in Arizona
BOHNTR replied to Seldom Drawn's topic in The Campfire
Well, I've bowhunted your great state annually as a non-resident for well over 30 years. During my adventures there, I've been very lucky to have arrowed 4 bull elk, a Coues buck, over 20 mule deer, 7 javelina, 12 coyotes, a few foxes, and a gorgeous desert bobcat. Love the state of Arizona. -
Hopefully, he's a better stalker and won't need to shoot those extreme distances.

Great looking mule deer.....congratulations and thanks for sharing them with us.

That's a great last day buck (2013 tag)......congratulations.

Spot and Stalk Archery Mule Deer on last day

well done! -
That's one heck of a forked horn if you ask me. Congratulations.

It was pretty good the last few days of December until about the 14th of January from what I saw. My hunting partner, who is still there, says the mule deer rut is now done.....there are still a few Coues bucks chasing a few of the non-bred does, but even they are reportedly slowing down.

Very cool antler configuration......don't see them like that every day. Congratulations.
-
Here's your answer. The buck in my avatar is from 13B (archery)......officially netted 191 2/8" B&C. I saw two other bucks bigger.

Here's a few critters I just arrowed with the Wac'em heads. December 27th-2013 Mule Deer: January 1st-2014 Mule Deer: January 5th-2014 Javelina:

I've tested the Wac'em heads with a Hooter Shooter (shooting machine) out to 110 yards to evaluate arrow flight. Out of all the heads I tested (including mechanical), the Wac'em was the most consistent and as close to field points as I've found (within 1/2" at 90 yards). There were several others that were flew consistent as well, including the ST standard, Exodus, Shuttle T's, and several mechanicals. However, the best over flight was the Wac'em.......it's why I shoot them.

Awesome, man! Cool looking buck.....especially with a bow. Congratulations.

Congratulations on a fine Coues Deer........and Happy B-Day.

What a cool antler configuration. Congratulations on a fine Coues Deer!

Some good info shared here.....I'll just add a few. Learn deer behavior and their alert tendencies (it helps) Use bears feet or Carlton Cat Paws to quiet your boots if you are not removing your boots on final approach (100 yards less) Be patient. The only that is going to scare the buck off is YOU Plan the correct route (wind permitting) and always allow proper shooting lanes Remember, even with some of the best bowhunters out West, probably 2 out of 10 stalks are successful. That means they fail 80% of the time. I just got back from AZ, hunting the end of December and into January. Stalks just seemed to work out this trip.....I was three for three on stalks (2 deer, javelina).......that has never happened in over 35 years of bowhunting.

Gorgeous buck......congratulations!

Good on you bonecollector for your latest post! While I can't produce a photo of the buck in question, I can confirm that big ol' bucks are taken every so often in the low desert units and not really advertised......if ever. I can still recall the morning my hunting partner and I hunted this big ol' desert buck and he was able to put arrow through his chest at 15 yards! The buck officially measured in the low 190's, I believe. Not sure if I ever posted this photo much.......but it gives us something to look at.

You should have seen some of the giants in that unit in the late 80's to early 90's......amazing desert bucks. Last time I seriously scouted it (4 years ago) I was highly disappointed and moved to a few neighboring units. Good luck.....
