    Mexico Trip

WTG Houston. It's about time you quit looking at the bone in peoples mouth's and went looking for some real bone. Sounds like you had a great hunt even with the weather. That was one thing that was great about when we went in December, there was great weather. Congrats on the nice buck. If you would have said it was 100 I don't think many would have argued. It looks bigger than it scores. I was sure happy to finally make the 100" club this year. The bad thing is I am already thinking about how nice it will be to make the 110. A guys gotta dream. Congraulations again! What knife did you use on him? Gotta get one of mine in a field photo and send it to me. I hope the family is all well.

    Concealable Pistols

Glock 26. It is the 9mm baby Glock. I am in law enforcement and own several Glocks. I carry the Glock 27 under my pants leg. It is the baby Glock version in 40. At first when I was shooting a SigSauer I was not very happy about our department switching to the Glock but have been very pleased since then. For my regular carry it is a full size Glock 40. Good luck just make sure she practices with whatever you choose.

    Check this new sticker out!

Amanda it looks great. I don't have the old one but I would love to have one. What information do I need to send to you. I have not seen one up here in Utah yet. Thanks Ultra
  5. A 65 inch wide Alaka Yukon bull moose. Not sure what he weighed but the horns cut off the skull through the eye sockets and behind the skull weighed 85 at the time of the kill. Many pack loads to the lake. Great fun hunt.

    The 2009 100" post

My first over 100" buck! Gross score 103 6/8.
  7. Here are a few photos of our hunt that took place December 13-18. We got to our ranch late in the day on Saturday the 12th. After a short time glassing we had seen several nice bucks and I also glassed up a nice looking shed. My buddy Patrick glassed where I had found the shed and soon located the other side. This would not be much significance but the fact that I later killed this same buck made it a great find. The next morning my Brother Mark and a good friend Lane went to the area where the sheds were glassed and I told them to make sure to pick them up. When they got into the area before they had found a good spot to glass from they bumped a nice buck that ran over the top of the nearby mountain. Patrick and I had gone the opposite direction and had seen a few bucks but nothing that I wanted to shoot on day one. Patrick located a group of javelina and since I had never killed one I decided to pay a little extra to the ranch owner and shoot one. We picked out a nice boar and one shot at about 250 yards he was mine. We looked around a little more of the ranch before meeting the others back at the ranch house around lunch time. When we heard the story of the buck they had jumped and where he had gone Patrick and I decided we would go around the backside of the mountain and see if we could find him. We ate a quick lunch and went to see what we could find. On the way around we found a couple of bucks but again no shooters. When we got to where we figured the buck had come over the top we set up and started glassing. I soon located a nice framed buck and Pat put the spotting scope on him. He had a nice frame and was tempting but he was only a 2x3 plus eye guards and I had told myself it was 100 inches or nothing until the end of our hunt. I had not been able to break that magical 100 inch mark at that point. I then started glassing again and found a small 3x3 and then there he was. I told Patrick "here we go" and directed him to the buck. He said "that is him you need to shoot that buck." I looked for a good shooting spot and finally decided to move to a large oak tree. Once he was located again I ranged him and he was 350 facing straight on. I did not want to risk a straight on shot and hoped he woudl turn. When he did turn he only stood broadside for a second then started walking away. I thought here he goes back over the top. I got a little rattled. I can say that now but I think I was a little more than a little shook up. He stopped finally quartering away and I was able to shake the shot into him. One shot and he was down. I quickly picked up a few things and told Patrick to stay on him till I find him. When I got to him to say that I was happy would be an understatement. He was indeed the buck that belonged to the two sheds we had found. They were two year old sheds but still in great shape. He scores 104 2/8 and I am very happy to have him. The buck my brother shot scores 102 and some change. Lanes scores right at the 100 inch mark and the buck that Dave shot after trying for several days with his bow scored 89 inches. Hopefull I can get the photos to download and can share. Also attached is a picture of a nice scorpion that we found in the bunkhouse. I don't have the field photos of most of the deer yet as they are on a different camera. Mine is the buck with the tips that are only 1 6/8 apart.

    It's Game Time!

We entered Mexico on December 12 and came back out on Dec 17. I can say that it took us much longer to get back out than it did to get in. The Military check in took about 1/2 hour and went very well. Coming back out the line took us 2 hours to get to the check point and one hour after we got there. Our capes had thawed slightly and it took four guys to make the decision that they needed to go to a registered taxidermist. We would have had no problems if Nasser would have stayed inside. We had this same guy last year and it seems the main thing he has heartburn with is the UMA number to be on the Fish and Wildlife form. When the US Fish and Wildlife guy checked them and the forms he said they looked ok but Nasser kept telling him they were not filled out correctly. We were also some of the first to come out with the new tags that were put in place this year and that seemed to cause a little confusion. All in all is was not that bad to deal with for the great hunt and experience we had. I guess I need to get back onto my Rosetta Stone and learn the language a little better for next year. Worth the time it took for sure.

    2009 December Coues Hunt

Thanks Java and Reaper. Come on now reaper people will think our lives were in jeopardy or someting from your drawing. That was a lot of fun and I was happy to help out. I guess one bull was better than no bulls at all. Have a good Christmas reaper and Java it will be nice to have your family up for the holiday's.

    2009 December Coues Hunt

Thanks Jim, that is part of what makes this deer so special. It is a nice buck anyway but that will be icing on the cake. Did he tell you about the bags of antlers the cowboy on the ranch had? Nothing that would knock your socks off but some ok bucks. Again thanks ahead of time. It will be fun to have them along with the mount that Patrick will do. Did you hear that Vince shot a nice one a couple of days ago. Pat said that he thinks it is between 115 and 120.

    2009 December Coues Hunt

Thanks Houston. This was a very fun hunt. I think there is a guy that Patrick knows that was able to get a permit somehow to get the sheds back out of Mexico. They are ready for him to bring back when he gets to it. We could not find the last years set but I asked the cowboy that manages the ranch to watch for them. The tip to tip spread is only 1 6/8 apart. When you look from the front straight on they would almost touch if both main beams wrapped the same. One beam is turned in a little more. He should net about 101 6/8. My best to date. How has your season gone? Later Bob

    2009 so far

Oh sure Houston you have not invited me to your great spot yet. Congratulations on youe season this year. I am going to come down and try to help Matthew with his late hunt. He is still having issues with his eyes following his surgery. Hopefully they will get better by then. Again congrats and I will let you know how Saskatchewan and Mexico go.
  15. I own a pair of Leica Geovids and my son in law was looking for a range finder. He does not have a lot of money and asked me what I would get. Of course I told him that if he has the money that he could not go wrong with any of the Leica's. He bought a leupold RX IV that does the angle and range. He was very dissapointed with the ranges it would read. We went and compaired it to my Leica's and there was no comparison. I had told him earlier that I had tested the Leupold and Bushnell and that he could count on reading about half what they adveritise. That was pretty close to what his did. He just sold his on ebay and bought the Leica 1200. Very compact and very good at reading the ranges advertised. I know it costs more but if you are planning on shooting longer ranges I would look at one of the higher end rangefinders for sure. Good luck.

    Lost Bow!!!

How can someone forget? We went to a local shooting range last Saturday and just after we arrived a competition was ending at the 1000 yard range. When they left we moved our shooting gear to shoot the 800 to 1000 yard ranges and there lying on one of the benches was a very nice AR-15 valued at around $4500. We thought about shooting the remaining rounds but took it to the office of the range and left them with our information to contact. About 45 minutes later a guy came and parked near us and had a very sick look on his face. He reluctantly came up to me and asked if we had found his weapon. I told him that we had and that it was in the office. He said that he had simply picked everthing up and placed it in his vehicle but "somhow had forgotten his AR". I am sure it could happen to anyone but hopefully most of us would not leave our "BABY" on the bench. Good luck to whomever the bow belongs to. I am sure they have an awfully sick stomach after finding it gone. Good luck to all this fall.

    Leupold 6-18x40

I have the 6-18x40 on several guns inculding .223 and 300 ultramag. I shot the same scope for 12 years on my SWAT sniper rifle in a 40xb. I can honestly say that I have never had a problem with any of them. All mine have the Tactical/adujstable windage and elevation knobs and they work great. I am not saying anything bad about any other scopes but for the money these are hard to beat. You can find them very often on ebay in the high $300 to low $400 range. They have some on for $499 buy it now price. I love mine and have them doped out to 700 yards with no problems. Whatever you choose good luck in your hunts.

    Arizona Elk

As a non resident and throwing out all the hype about elk units I struggle each year dediding where to put in for Archery elk. I have 9 points as a non-resident and I have a friend with 13. Of course we hear a lot about units 9 and 10, also we were told that we should put in for 5B, not sure if they said north or south. I have been in both 9 and 10 and have a good idea of the opportunities there but know nothing about any of the other units includint 5B. Is 5B worth using the points on or should we stay with the big name units. Of course we would like opportunities on the biggest elk in the woods but then again I don't know that either one of us would pass on a good shot on a 150 or better out of the gate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Arizona Elk

Again thanks for all the input. I would have to agree that there is a lot of over scoring. I know that the 340 bull my wife shot here in Utah looked to me to be more like the mid 350's in the short time we had to decide to shoot. I is a great looking bull none the less. The only reason I throw out the 350 is that I would really love to shoot one bigger than hers but I know how tought the task really is. It is great to hear all the input from you all. Good luck to you all in your hunts this year.

    Arizona Elk

Thanks for all the input. And yes I did mean 350. The information gives me a lot to think about. Neither one of us has the hunter safety point yet and I think we will try to get that prior to next years applications. Again thanks for the help and good luck to you all this year.

    Another guessing game!

43 1/8 buck total score 101 on the hoof. Not sure I even have a close guess being from Utah and primarily a mule deer hunter. But what the heck.

    Glassing up......

I live in Utah but have hunted Coues several times in Arizona. I have been lucky enough to glass up three different lions in the 8 or so times that I have hunted Coues. Pretty fun since I have never glassed one here in Utah.
